I'm not sure what's worse, Georgian Rule or Rule by Russia? The Ossetian Regime supported by Russia has been listed by several human rights organizations as being Authoritarian. Not to mention Russian Forces control the area. So is South Ossetia Really indepedent? I don't think so; I don't even think any of Russia's smaller republics are free in any sense.I feel sorry for Ossetians, the Ingush, The Chechnians and all the people of the Caucuses region..Russia/Georgia/terrori­sts need to get lost.

The Ossetians are an ethnic minority, and Georgian independence threatened their (relatively) privileged status under Soviet rule. Russian republics in the North Caucasus have to keep dozens of ethnic groups happy, and they want to be closer to the Ossetian inhabitants of Alania to the north. They have also wanted independence for a hundred years, and there were some issues with racism that caused the split.

Ossetia isn't independent, though. It is independent from Georgia but dominated by Russia. If the region had been 100% Alans who wanted secession, Georgia would not have much of a claim over it. But there were (and are) thousands of Georgians living in Ossetia who now have others choosing their nationality for them, just as Georgia sought to choose the nationality of the breakaway states. Maybe every house with a Georgian in it should remain part of Georgia? It has to stop somewhere.
