Hey, great video ... I want to start working on this ... you said there was a link to the plans on here? I can't find it ... Im very newbie when it comes to youtube. Thanks
@reyoflightstudios I just put the link in the description above. There will always be more information about each video if you watch them directly on our site. YouTube limits our ability to post helpful links and things you might want to know about.
Thanks for showing how you repair and fine tune your pieces! Those are the secrets many leave out and what separates you from the rest. I've learned a ton by watching your vids and will continue to keep tabs on your channel. One final note: what a kind gesture to stop what you were doing to help Duane learn how to make his piece. All the best.
i just stumbled upon these trunk vids but about ten years ago my sister bought these plans intending for our dad to make her one witch 4 years later he did. and me being the Younger brother want one and was promptly told build your own which a year ago i did. how ever i raised the box up 2 inches and made all the rails and straps out of walnut and the panels and tray of maple and with the curved lid the piece looks amazing.
Yet another excellent piece of work. I wish I had paid more attention in woodwork class now. What would you recommend as a beginners project? Thanks again for the video and please keep up the good work.
Thanks! There are quite a few projects out there that are good for beginners and buying a set of plans is a pretty good idea. But you can check out your Contemporary Clock, Magazine Rack, Cutting Board, and Pencil Holder videos for some relatively simple projects.
I love the way this came out, and I've taken a look at several of your other videos too. Some great tips here, and I'll definitely be watching more as I get more into woodworking.
Quick question for you about this project, would you say that the trunk is sturdy enough to support an adult sitting on it? I'd like to try a project like this for use in my studio apartment, but because I'm limited on space everything tends to serve double duty (like storage/seating).
Well, I suppose if you are very light, you could probably get away with it. It could take the punishment for a while but the tongues are not very deep on those rails, so I would be concerned about their long term longevity. I suppose if you redesign the top a bit, with deeper true tenons, you could get away with it.
I love Tansu style chests and cabinets. Japanese woodworking was mostly softwoods like cedar and pine, wasn't it? Was that the reason for all the hardware?
Honestly, I am just starting to learn about Tansu, so I don't really know exactly what woods were used. But with any wood, having heavy duty metal protecting the joints would certainly increase the longevity.

When spraying did you thin the varnish down or did you just use it straight up?
TeenWoodworker 2 years ago
Can't recall exactly, but I do sometimes thin, but no more than 10% with water-based materials.

I got a little ahead of myself and forgot to install the ribs on mine, but I think I will do that this week. I like the look. Very nice job!

I'm imagining you getting nailed by some vigilant "green police" for spraying chemicals outside like that.

I wish I had the artistic and the just plain skill to do what you do. I think your vids are full of good info. Thanks
