It's sad that rotary's banned. Consider that they allow Boxster, V-type,W-type, inline engine and even diesel now to all compete. I think it's fair to let a rotary race considering Mazda sunk just as much or more time and resources into development. If anything, allowing the rotary to compete would force the other manufacturers to find even better methods while they're being dominated on the track by the rotary. ;) Isn't competition supposed to be good? Banning the rotary is a sad racing move.

@Lypur Contrary to popular beliefs here at Youtube, this "banning" never happened. New regulations for the 1991 season were set in stone 1990 or 1989. That's at least an year before 787B's only victory. New regulations did outlaw all other types of engines other than 3.5L NAs, but that had absolutely nothing to do with Mazda's (lack of) success: 787 and 787B entered in total 21 races. That's not domination.

I had the pleasure to hear the #78 Grand Am RX-8. At max rev at Daytona it sounded like an F1 car. God it was glorious. I used to hate rotaries. That RX-8 changed me.

@serginietor Those aren't the wheels, those are fans that bolt to the wheels to pull air through the brakes, kinda like a turbo impeller mounted backwards. They were common on circuit racing and some tarmac rally cars (Integrales used them a lot) for a while in the mid to late 80's and early 90's. It's racing not ricing, how it looks is nowhere near as important as how it works.

@quakov read my video description. kindly i write more details for you. #18 (787b-001) is 1991 le mans 6th car. #55 (787b-002) is 1991 le mans winner. mazda decided to archive #55 787b-002 for anniversary and make one more 787b chassis for racing = this #202 (787b-003). this car was made for several hundred kilometer race in japan (JSPC = all Japan Sports Prototype Championship) and those race did not need head lights so mazda remove it from this car for weight saving.

mazda made this 787B-003 #202 car for JSPC(Japan Sports Prototype Championship) in 1991 because they decide to keep #55 car permanently in memory of the le mans champion. and Mazda reworked the chassis for the short distance(1000km race like Fuji) with the smaller radiator and the removed headlight for lightening.
