Hey Hans! nice test. I would love to see how far you can take this 2d solution.
Perhaps soften the edges by a couple pixels and then try to animate an inner glow in some areas. Maybe throw in an additional layer 2d or 3d Layer to enhance or add to the main mushroom cloud effect. A film grain and very subtle cam shake could help too.
What if you were to make a duplicate layer of the nuke in aftereffects, then apply a slight gaussian blur over it, and reduce it the opacity down to 50% or less? It should preserve all the detail, yet soften the edges as well. Maybe apply some grain in there as well to dust it up some. I use photo-warping in my own nukes, so I'm watching your results with great interest.
I think if you throw in a few layers of "Atmospheric" effects, then that'll help "dirty" it up a little for you. But I like the semi-surreal look of this so far. Keep plugging ahead!
looks pretty sweet

very convincing :)

Yep, they edges are way too sharp...it was mainly a test to see what the warping looked like on a 2D still...great point though, many thanks.

Nice, just one thing:
You Should have feathered it in the edges of the explosion so it looks more realistic
