  • Hey, What do you expect from a country that excludes every other country from a "World Series"?

  • It means there's nothing new under the sun, it's from the Bible.

  • Watched it like 5 times

    love it

but always confused what's it's all about

  • hands touching butts? definitely not faithful to the novel.

  • With all the respect to American culture but can we leave the 'everything is coppied from America' for a minute please. 'The Sun Also Rises' is an old Chinese saying. It's been around for a long long time and it reflects the Chinese values and an possitive attitudes towards life even when time is rough. So don't drag this completely oriental movie into the American culture.

  • It's completely symbolism. The plot is not supposed to make sense, and its purpose is to provide scattered memory of a generation. I personally found the film is very beautiful and haunting, but could not explain why.

  • The tile For American may mean Hemingway, but for Chinese means a philosophy metaphor" no matter what your plight was worst today, the sun also rise tomorrow". How an optimistic life attitude. I really appreciate it.

  • Undoubtedly i was a really ambiguous movie, even Chinese also difficult to understand what the movie want to say。For me, i think the movie would like to tell us the story our parent generation's love story (The era was China's culture revolution period, still had many romantic story here and there).

  • @Scottcreek942 you are SOOOO ignorant. The movie has nothing to do with "the novel", and should you have seen the movie, you would know it. ...there's more than just Ernest Hemingway out there, you know?

  • the sun also rises is a reference to the biblical passage from Ecclesiastes. It doesn't relate to the hemingway novel.

  • lol this ain't no american movie, I dun think.

  • obviously not!!!

  • What the fuck is this? Is it supposed to be related at all to the book?

I'll be at Wikipedia if someone has the answer.

  • The movie was not related to Hemingway's novel, but another Chinese novel " Velvet"(天鹅绒)by Yemi(叶弥)。The story occured in last century 60s-70s in China and the movie composed by 4 parts-crazy mother, love, gun and dream. The director is Jiangwen(姜文), a strong romantic style Chinese movie maker.1995,his first movie "In the heart of the sun" won the Cannes Golden. Actually a gifted director.

  • Hemingway, author of this novel, lived most of his life in Paris.

Therefore it isn't even American culture.

  • He lived in Paris for only about 10 years.

  • why don't they call it velvet

    its almost like false advertising

  • tseuc

    You are incredibly ethnocentric

You may not believe this, but the world does NOT revolve around American culture- which has only been around since 1776. Chinese culture has been around for THOUSANDS of years. Why should they care if there's an American book with a similar title?

There's NO copyright even in the US for titles, & there have been several American films with IDENTICAL names. Besides, this is a CHINESE film!

Artists can call their books, films or plays anything they want.

  • You keep your sociological bullshit to yourself. Tseuc was merely asking why the named the movie after one of the finest and most well known pieces of work of any generation. He was in no way, shape, or form demonstrating ethnocentrism.

  • too right! and why is it that just cos someone writes in BLOCK CAPITALS they think theyre making a strong and valid point, excuse us for likeing a book and not being aware of the intrcasies of millenia old chinese art

  • @spookytom I know you wrote that 2 years ago, but i feel compelled: it doesn't matter how long Chinese culture has been around, but rather how long the Bible has been around since it is the source for the title. Also, saying that American culture began in 1776 is extremely problematic. Are you implying that the label "American" is all that makes the culture of the colonies American? Whatever culture America has, since you imply it is different, is not tied directly to the date of its founding.

  • What does this have to do with the book?
