Too much of anything is not good. I was raised in an Asian culture with parents who are aware of Western society's ideals and I think it is the best way because there are pros and cons for both sides, and you can choose. I get to enjoy many things like Westerners kids but at the same time didn't fall into prey of alcohol, drugs and sex like many of my Western friends. Of course not everyone is like this and it might not be a 'wrong' thing for you, but sometimes they're just taken too extreme.

I live in Vancouver Canada, which has a huge Chinese population. If asian parenting is so good, why have I never met a Chinese-Canadian business owner or leader in any industry? I do see a lot of spoiled asian teenager smoking while driving expensive cars their dad's bought them. There may be a lot of successful chinese-born business people, but they may stick to their own cultural circles due to their strict upbringing and are unable to properly integrate into their adopted society.

I graduated from my university magna cum laude & while my parents expected my brother and I to do well, we were given a free rein. My parents paid for my private high school and all of my university tuition so that I got out of school completely debt free and didn't have to work to support myself through university. It was an unspoken expectation that we ought to do well given the financial sacrifices that they made because they certainly weren't rolling.
They were the ones who insisted focus on my study and don't worry about getting a job. I've applied for scholarships and their combined income is above the ceiling anyway. At least I have a GPA that's competitive for any top graduate schools and they always wanted me to get a masters if not Phd as my grandmother wanted.

I think this is probably the most misinformed video I`ve seen in a long time, but it did give me a good laugh. Just read that Chua's husband, also a lawyer, is Jewish. Her kids are Jewish. Jews fair pretty well in school and business also. I hear the father is pleasant. My recollection of the Jewish father is he smiles from a distance and cares little until one sibling bites another. The mother schleps the children to all kinds of events that is meaningful to the career she wished she had but didn't. I might have done the same myself. I believe key to good parenting should fall right in between of Asian mothers and Westerner mothers. Asian mothers = too strict ; westerner mothers = too lenient.
Too much of anything is not good. I was raised in an Asian culture with parents who are aware of Western society's ideals and I think it is the best way because there are pros and cons for both sides, and you can choose. I get to enjoy many things like Westerners kids but at the same time didn't fall into prey of alcohol, drugs and sex like many of my Western friends. Of course not everyone is like this and it might not be a 'wrong' thing for you, but sometimes they're just taken too extreme.

The liberal approach makes the parent and child feel better in the beginnning, but, in the end, there is disappointment as colleges reject the child for lack of success. I live in Vancouver Canada, which has a huge Chinese population. If asian parenting is so good, why have I never met a Chinese-Canadian business owner or leader in any industry? I do see a lot of spoiled asian teenager smoking while driving expensive cars their dad's bought them. There may be a lot of successful chinese-born business people, but they may stick to their own cultural circles due to their strict upbringing and are unable to properly integrate into their adopted society.

I graduated from my university magna cum laude & while my parents expected my brother and I to do well, we were given a free rein. My parents paid for my private high school and all of my university tuition so that I got out of school completely debt free and didn't have to work to support myself through university. It was an unspoken expectation that we ought to do well given the financial sacrifices that they made because they certainly weren't rolling.

Just read that Chua's husband, also a lawyer, is Jewish. Her kids are Jewish. Jews fair pretty well in school and business also. I hear the father is pleasant. My recollection of the Jewish father is he smiles from a distance and cares little until one sibling bites another. The mother schleps the children to all kinds of events that is meaningful to the career she wished she had but didn't. I might have done the same myself. Other than that, they let the kids get the grades they work for.

There is another side to this "superiority" question. Who does the parent want to be? A shrieking, screaming, crying, bullying person?" Or someone who displays tolerance and acceptance of their kids? Doctors and veterinarians need straight As. Shriek and cry if being a vet is so important to your child. The kid that wants to be a chef and open a bakery doesn't need straight As. Morever, that child may have to pave his or her own way without the help, or bullying, from anybody else.

For sure there was set backs during opiate trades and the years after, however, you cannot say that east asians are less impressive than any other races. There is even an article that ranks the most innovative countries in the world. #1 Singapore, #2 Korea, I believe Japan was within top 10. However, USA wasn't even in the top 10. Similar to the International IQ rankings, East Asian countries were leading the pact, followed by Europeans. Also, the patents that come out from the US are largely by Asian-Americans.
