My dad's Amtrack's engine died right after it crossed the reef. While it was drifting in the current it was hit by artillery and sunk. He was one of only two of the men to make it to shore.
my grandfather always tells me about when he drove these on saipan, he said after the war they would bust holes in the AMTRACKs and tow them out past the first reef and let them fully submerge there
