Let's not forget to mention a "little known Swedish tenor" I think his name was Jussi Bjoerling...maybe you all have heard of him. His was a voice of beauty and power with a glorious high C!
A sumptuous and thrilling rendition. Amazing that I found Fritz Wunderlich and Mario Lanza doing this aria in the last few days - and have favorited them both. Many thanks for the words too.
I agree with all the comments here. Very few tenors in history could mix power with beauty the way Mario had done all his life, whether in song or in Operatic interpretations such as this one. I have a handful of Opera tenors who I think had both of these qualities but do not want to compare them to Lanza. There was only one Mario Lanza & I'm glad I have all of his recordings. I just love YouTube.
of all the great che gelida mannina this is the greatest of them all.such romantic poetic beauty in the voice flawless interpetation and pure tenor gold out of the lanza throat.
The power that there is in his voice, excites me from inside. The romanticism in his voice calms me at the same time. He is the only tenor/singer that does this effect to me. He was my dad's favourite. It is a pity that we didn't share enough time together hearing Lanza's voice. Love you Dad!!
Is there an aria with more profound love and true sentiment in its delicate words than this one? And a more beautiful music? And is there a more passionate interpretation of this aria than Mr. Lanza's supreme one? I don't think so. As I wrote before the beauty of this aria is beyond words and your posting it as a response to Look For The Silver Lining, given the true meaning of its beautiful lyrics, is touching and says a lot too about the superior human being that you must be.
Being the first time I read them I find these ultra romantic lyrics more than beautiful either in English or Italian and more so sung by Lanza. Thank you very much for writing them down.
Absolutely beautiful and memorable. MMMM. I would like to see it on screen as an opening to a movie. All I see is landscapes going towards a city. Possibly a driving scene to a very romantic love story. Alot of actors in the US like europe. Maybe in the future we will see it. Very powerful at all levels. Thank you...
Hi Balletamie - The description you wrote is correct and very impressive - especially when you consider that May 5th, the date of this recording, was Lanza's first commercial recording, along with three others done the same day. To have been awarded that honor must have been so exciting for him. Thanks for calling our attention to it!

Shame on the musicological fraternity for its lingering prejudice towards this vocal "force of nature."
As Placido Domingo said: "One of the truly great natural tenor voices of the past century -- a voice of beauty, passion, and power"
Nobody can belittle that voice !

Wonderfully interpreted as all arias ballads and songs Lanza sang with that extraordinary voice of his.
