What defines him to me, was I was watching him pitch at BOB (what it was called back then) when a ball was lined foul into the stands by First Base.
Well the ball hit a young girl hurting her, not too badly but still hurting her. Randy walked over to the area, looked at the girl being helped and went back to the mound.
He had been pitching well, but after that, he just lost his mojo for that particular game.
But it seem to speak well of him. He didn't just shrug off the kid being hurt.
Ryan also played most of his career in the era of the four-man starting rotation; he simply got to start more games and rack up more innings than Johnson could. When Johnson was on a roll he would blow away batters better than any other pitcher I've observed.
Randy Johnson will never take out Nolan Ryan but he is still the most dominating strike out pitcher of all time. He just passed Roidger Clemens so that will have to do until Johnson passes Ryan for most career 10-plus strike out games. Johnson idling at 210 and Ryan stuck forever at 215.
Ya Randy Johnson has the highest strike out rate per nine innings in mlb history. He won't catch Ryan but RJ is greatest strike out pitcher of all time. Ryan played longer, I believe he played 27 seasons.
I Will be so glad as soon he goes to the hall of fame

He never did get up to 5,000, but he's still the best strikeout pitcher of all time...at least in terms of K/9
