And now I'm taking the LSATs in October to try to get into Law School. But if my score isn't good enough, there's no point in going to a low tier school. The economy sucks too much for that. In that scenario, I could make more money concentrating on poker full time. Would that make me a compulsive gambler? No. The tables are foreign to everyone who has not put the work and effort in to understand the game. That's only a flaw when someone like that makes judgments on a world they dont know.
@NoThnxIdRatherBurn your an idiot. Thats not a compulsive gambler. He was the actor of a top poker player who decided to take on a top player for his stack. call phil ivey a compulsive gambler then and hes made over 20 million. A good woman will stick by her man no matter what life is full of roller coasters. A slutty gold digger will leave her man when hes down and find a guy with more money. IF damon made 20 mil as poker player she be on her knees giving head.
I really hope you didn't mean to direct this at me, because if you can read you'll notice that I said I play poker and I defended Damon's character in the film. If this wasn't a mistake you're (see? I spell it right) the idiot.
matt damons character basically robs other people for a living, as does worm - his g/f leaves because she doesn't want to end up married to a compulsive gambler, - and he sticks by worm who's just an out and out crook.
and yet so many guys are trying to blame the girl. if you want more then a slut, then you have to be more then just what a slut wants.
"Basically robs people..." Good luck justifying that BS. It's a game of skill that people sit down and willingly play. Some people are better at it than others. Worm is a compulsive gambler. I've never met a "compulsive gambler" who would've let himself be browbeaten by a woman only to end up driving trucks for a year. She wanted a lawyer. What if he was a defense lawyer and put guilty ppl back on the streets? lol. There are very few "high roads" in making money.
@NoThnxIdRatherBurn then why the talk of 'suckers' and the whole cleaning out the people who are just playing for fun. It's preying on people, deliberatly. I think the terming 'robbing them for a living is justified. It's acting like you don't know what you're doing so you can clean them out. If you were honest you wouldn't be able to 'rob' them would you.
Think of something you're good at -- it can be a hobby or w/e you do for a living. Let's say you've put thousands of hours into studying it, practicing it, and then performing it at a high level. I walk up to you and challenge you at your specialty because I'm convinced you're not actually talented -- you're just lucky. I demand to play you for money. You're not sure, but I insist. You agree. You win. I keep challenging you and losing. What word would you use to describe me?
@NoThnxIdRatherBurn As for the 'compulsive gambler' - he can't help himself. He goes clean for a while but then he's back at it until he finally throws his education away to head for las vegas. He describes himself as only feeling 'alive' when he's sitting at the table, gambling. That is a compulsive gambler. He's lost it all once, all he needed was the right incentive (worm in this case) to get back into it again. He lies to hide it, and he loves to do it. It's like a drug.
"Goes clean" is not the correct phrase. He is not recovering from a crack addiction. Damon's mistake in this movie is not that he played cards -- it's that he took a shot at stakes that were too high for him. That's called poor bankroll management. He played in a game that was far too expensive for what he could afford to lose. A smart poker player will not do this. He feels "alive" at the table because he has a passion for the game, like many of us do. Gambling =/= poker.
He shouldn't have to hide the fact that he plays poker. That's why he shouldn't have wasted time with this particular girl. She's within her rights not to want to date a poker player. That's fine. But she's far too controlling. They are both better w/o each other. I am a recent college graduate. I went on 75% scholarship and paid rent and living expenses by playing poker. I'm a career winner @ the tables. I never play stakes my bankroll can't afford.
@NoThnxIdRatherBurn 'I never play stakes my bankroll can't afford'. Well he did. He lied as well. She's certainly within her rights not to want to marry a COMPULSIVE GAMBLER which matt damons character is. Also a liar who rips people off by shaking them down.
She stuck by him and he let her down. He's only happy while he's gambling. His choice. So is hers. He needs someone like himself and she obviously isn't. She's not being controlling, just realistic.
@NoThnxIdRatherBurn And as for no 'high roads' in making money. Gambling may need skill to be good. But it's still 'gambling'. Any woman marrying a compulsive gambler is well and truly asking for it. She obviously didn't want to and you can't blame her. It's like marrying any addict.

It's kind of ironic but Matt Damon's advice on playing cards doesn't stand up anymore. Tight aggressive doesn't win the money in cash games or the WSOP anymore. Look at the styles of Tom Dwan and Phil Ivey. Loose aggressive always.
i tell people that all they REALLY need to sit down and be a poker player is in this scene. premium hands, tight but aggressive, if its good enough to call, its good enough to raise. easy way to rule the kitchen table and win lbs of change at thanksgiving.
@wiggsdannyboy777 lol so i'm trying to understand something. was your comment sarcastic? i play tight aggressive, and i feel like i need to learn how to play loose aggressive, and pick my spots better. the biggest hands are won by underdogs pre-flop. but i won consecutive rush %150 freeroll tourneys (8.25 and 3.25 respectively) playing TAG all the way. now i'm stuck in the microstakes full of fuckin' fish that call everything and suckout. WWJD (chris ferguson)
@GaChristianHY hey....no, i wasnt bein sarcastic. at all. but temper the advice in this scene with the perfect line near the end of 'cincinnati kid'..."thats what its all about, isnt it? doing the wrong thing at the right time.". this scene in rounders is school. that one line is graduate school. works for me at least.

I like that moment at 6:15 when they are moving down the escalator. Norton wears a fiendish face, excited and plotting his next scheme. And of course he really likes his friend, and looks back at him, conspiratorially and admiringly at the same time. And I think it took Matt Damon by surprise, and he just smiled back him. And this is what I call "great acting." That subtle stuff that only great actors know how to communicate....
hell you don't need to be a poker player to agree with a shitload of stuff in this movie and this circle of card players. specially the women part. women hate to be "changed", yet they enforce the very same thing on their partners. Who's the one now that's all about "dominating"? Fucking shit
I think there is a real moral story here. No matter how much you change yourself to be good enough for someone the lies will never last forever. It doesn't matter if you do this out of love and caring if the thing is in your blood. Mike accidentally even says he "felt alive" for the first time after sitting on that game. It's genuine and in the same time wrong thing to say. It makes me feel bad thinking, as you can't have both. The lie and the love.
In the real poker world, poker players aren't all chum and buddy buddy like that, where they can curse at one another. the real poker players are anti social and don't normally communicate their personal feelings with the other players. Duh.
Over time you can pick things up that will help in later pots.
No problem I can answer that for you, maybe i shouldnt say this here but I would say you sign up with this working bonus code utubebonus. if you sign-up with it at their site fulltiltpoker(。)net they will double your 1st deposit.and grant you access to special tourneys So yeah like free money to start off with,
Between Rounders and Good Will Hunting, Matt Damon makes some very impresive movies, full of meaning 'bout life's up and downs. And the funny thing is the contrast between both movies: on this one he is the "Good guy building up a conscience" and in Good Will Hunting he is the "tough guy with the 'I can beat every one' attitude". Some versatile actor. And great story, on both movies.
Matt Damon doesn't "make" movies. He takes direction from someone who makes movies. He's good at doing what he's told. That's like saying The Mona Lisa makes great paintings. The Mona Lisa just sits and smiles. A garbage man's more creative than an actor.
I went on a poker trip a few years ago while I was laid off -- Boston to Atlantic City down to Memphis to Texas to Arizona to Vegas then flied home....unbelievable poker trip. For you online guys, consider doing something like that. Loads of fun.
Best line in the movie: "We can't run from who we are. Our destiny chooses us." There is also a song (not in the movie) that goes "We all begin out with good intent When love is raw and young We believe that we can change ourselves The past can be undone But we carry on our back the burdens time always reveals In the lonely light of morning In the wound that would not heal It's the bitter taste of losing everything I've held so dear" THAT, my friends, IS Rounders in a nutshell.
OK, so quoting Sarah McLachlan is kind of gay. But I was trying to make a point. Your TRUE personality always comes out in the end, no matter how much you try to change yourself. Agree?
I think in our so-called "developped" societies we're given too much time and opportunities to worry about who we really are, how we fit in, what destiny ought to be ours, etc. when over a billion human beings are starving to death and surviving with less than a dollar a day... Personality issues are a very petty concern of modern societies if you look at things globally, but we're so fucking spoiled we don't even realise that or quickly dismiss it to go back to our daily complaints. SICK!
1 You are right on complaining 'bout the way we missplace our priorities, the first thing is survivial, which should be or main concern. But
2 When survival is achieved on a regular basis, acording to your level of skill/dedication, the personality issue arises, 'cause on our most inspired/stressed/emotional moments, the age old question arises: who r we and what do we want... as supposedly rational beings, it is in our nature. Remember: can happen at any moment... so be ready.
also depends on your style some i would say ....if your a Tight agressive player then Tourniments are better i would say.....and if your a Loose agressive player then Cash games are better. This is also assuming you will adjust your play depending on the table also
Tournament play makes you a better poker player, it teaches you patience and discipline.
In cash you have all kinds of people raising and calling reraises with hands like Q4s because of "implied odds".
I just had a donk call my pocket 10's flop bet with A9 (flop was 754 or something). Turn is a 9 and he min-raised my pot-sized bet like it was the nuts. I shoved and an Ace inevitably hit the fucking river.
8-6 is playable in position with REAL implied odds, A9 meh... Q4 not at all. But when the flop comes all rags, why in the fucking hell are you calling a pot-sized bet???
And then min-raising another large bet. I hate limit players.
To the man that posted this thank you sir. Wanted to watch this again before I go to Vegas a week from today. Going to play in my first 1,500 bracelet event. Did not know if I really wanted to spend that much but I am not sure how much of a price you can put on a dream? Just got to play my game and I can win. Except I think it is about making the best decisions. If those decisions lead me to the final table or a win so be it. Would like to make the money and up the dream from there. GL me
fell 16 places short of the money then won that and the entire buy in back after i lost. Lasted longer than hellmuth and a couple other players. And took Dennis Phillips for 300 bucks on cash game I had QQs he had 1010s and flop was nothing over an 8 and let him think I was on a flush draw whole way. He checked it to me on the river and i pushed and a Jack came off he thought I had it and let him play his hand fast and he doubled me up. And I saw him earlier and asked him to sign my hat hah
Till this day I couldn't figure out why people play tournament poker. Cash games are way superior. Sounds like Dennis Philips plays low level cash game(you only took him for a 300 spin after a double up), which doesn't surprise me at all.
I would love to be good enough to be able to play a hand blind. I can read strong vs weak, and when my hand is good and not good, but that's not enough. When you know people don't have it and you bet, you usually have to hope that they don't make a pair or you're getting called on the end -- so cards matter to an extent.
part 5 is the part where worm is in a strip joint and finds out his markers have been bought up by this sleasebag loan shark and theres nudity thats why its not here

In the real poker world, poker players aren't all chum and buddy buddy like that, where they can curse at one another. the real poker players are anti social and don't normally communicate their personal feelings with the other players. Duh.

And great story, on both movies.
operationflux 2 years ago 2
yeah. he's also known for being smart.. ocean's eleven, good will hunting, the bourne movies..

Matt Damon doesn't "make" movies. He takes direction from someone who makes movies. He's good at doing what he's told. That's like saying The Mona Lisa makes great paintings. The Mona Lisa just sits and smiles. A garbage man's more creative than an actor.

"Matt Damon doesn't "make" movies. He takes direction from someone who makes movies."
You do realize he wrote Good Will Hunting, right?
"The Mona Lisa just sits and smiles. A garbage man's more creative than an actor. "
As someone who has directed actors, what a load of HORSESHIT.

OK, so quoting Sarah McLachlan is kind of gay. But I was trying to make a point. Your TRUE personality always comes out in the end, no matter how much you try to change yourself. Agree?
circuitdesign 2 years ago
I think in our so-called "developped" societies we're given too much time and opportunities to worry about who we really are, how we fit in, what destiny ought to be ours, etc. when over a billion human beings are starving to death and surviving with less than a dollar a day... Personality issues are a very petty concern of modern societies if you look at things globally, but we're so fucking spoiled we don't even realise that or quickly dismiss it to go back to our daily complaints. SICK!
fixodent 2 years ago
2 things:

This is also assuming you will adjust your play depending on the table also
nova54 2 years ago
Tournament play makes you a better poker player, it teaches you patience and discipline.
In cash you have all kinds of people raising and calling reraises with hands like Q4s because of "implied odds".
I just had a donk call my pocket 10's flop bet with A9 (flop was 754 or something). Turn is a 9 and he min-raised my pot-sized bet like it was the nuts. I shoved and an Ace inevitably hit the fucking river.
MrCanuck 2 years ago
funny that you say that, but if he had like 6 8 you wouldent tell the story
ZawEatsFish 2 years ago
8-6 is playable in position with REAL implied odds, A9 meh... Q4 not at all. But when the flop comes all rags, why in the fucking hell are you calling a pot-sized bet???
And then min-raising another large bet. I hate limit players.
MrCanuck 2 years ago
To the man that posted this thank you sir. Wanted to watch this again before I go to Vegas a week from today. Going to play in my first 1,500 bracelet event. Did not know if I really wanted to spend that much but I am not sure how much of a price you can put on a dream? Just got to play my game and I can win. Except I think it is about making the best decisions. If those decisions lead me to the final table or a win so be it. Would like to make the money and up the dream from there. GL me

I do play I do it for a living sir. Won back my buy in after falling 16 places short of the money
kiddwalker 2 years ago
did you lose?
sokerkritik 2 years ago
fell 16 places short of the money then won that and the entire buy in back after i lost. And I saw him earlier and asked him to sign my hat hah
kiddwalker 2 years ago
Till this day I couldn't figure out why people play tournament poker. Cash games are way superior. Sounds like Dennis Philips plays low level cash game(you only took him for a 300 spin after a double up), which doesn't surprise me at all.

I would love to be good enough to be able to play a hand blind. I can read strong vs weak, and when my hand is good and not good, but that's not enough. When you know people don't have it and you bet, you usually have to hope that they don't make a pair or you're getting called on the end -- so cards matter to an extent.
