  • Rescue is good, but the sad reality is that when there is a surplus in a market, the average price drops. Nicer horses become available for less money and these rescue horses become free. People who always wanted a horse, but have no money to care for them now have them in their backyards. We are seeing an increase in neglected equine cases, and the number of sick, hungry suffering animals will only increase without an outlet. The truth hurts.. but it is still the truth.

  • How can I help?! I love horses.

  • Help me save horses! I Love Horses and am doing something for all horses!

  • I am so glade to see Martha helping this beautiful horses. I know she love`s her horses very much. When I wacht this video I cried. God Bless You all.

  • ok, i might be the only one to say this but if you do the math we can't stop slaughter we need to make it humane. without it where are our surplus horses going to go? To people that are going to abuse them. There have already been cases of people turning their domesticated horses out into the forrest and they later died, i don't know about you but this is not what i want to happen.

  • cowgirl...i more than agree. i have rescued 5 horses -- but they all cant be saved. There are to many of them..they are all going to end up at sales, with no one to buy them. I think there needs to be a more humane way. Or, we could all stop breeding them! Al of horses are bred because someone thinks it would be a good idea. I do think that the whole thing is terrible...but there needs to be somewhere for them to go. You are going to see many more horses being abused and left to starve

  • Please, EVERYONE, take few moments to call your Congressional representative, and Senators. Urge them to get HR503,(in the Congress), and S311 (in the Senate), to the floor for a vote. Urge them to Co-Sponsor the bills and to press for a vote ASAP. Do this everyday, until this horror is ended.

Thank you for helping to save them.

  • I am quite aware of what the Equine Advocate person was describing about horse abuse. Humane euthanasia is far different than horses sold at killer auctions who for the most part are young and healthy; they are are transported in a horrifying means to Mexico and Canada where they suffer a brutal death. The profit motive to sell the horses for consumption abroad denigrates the democratic principles we stand for as a nation.

  • Interesting piece, 5 stars and a favorite

  • Just as they don't butcher "down cows", they also don't slaughter very sick, injured, or emaciated horses. The meat plants will not take poor quality horses. Over 70% of horses slaughtered are young, fit, healthy, and sound.

  • horses thar are injured to the point that can't walk shoud be euthanized humanely

  • My point is, you may have seen horrid slaughter house videos or you are just grossed out by the thought of someone eating a horse, but you have not seen the other side.Horses injured to the point they can't walk, bleeding,in pain, starving.I have looked in their eyes and I would much rather they go to slaughter than suffer for the rest of their lives, months upon years.

  • Yes, it's humane to pack a horse which cannot walk into a truck with other strange horses for a long journey from auction to auction.

Responsible horse owners call the vet when their horses get to the state you describe. I should know, I had to do it last year.

  • There seem to be more irresponible owners where I live that let their horses suffer anyway. There are alot of wrongs done to horses. How about that race world?

  • You have got to be kidding. Why are those the only 2 options?? Responsible horse owners seek medical treatment or have their horse humanely euthanized when one of the above conditions exist. Or just try feeding them, that does wonders for a starving horse. There are state laws protecting horses from this type of neglectful or abusive ownership and those are what need to be enforced consistently to get people to wake up and realize horses are a huge responsibility with certain needs.

  • Do you own a horse? Just wondering...

  • I don't have all the answers, but shutting down the slaughter houses at this time sure wasn't it.There are folks who watch their horses suffer and die because they can't afford the care or to put them down. You see they find these $50.00 horses a bargain.Others are turning their horses loose to fend for themselves.

  • That doesn't sound bad for one horse, does it? It is estimated that 100,000 horses will be saved annually. The math: $3900.00 X 100,000 horses = $390,000,000.00.

I am all for saving horses, but I don't keep that kinda cash in my matress.Note that is an annual estimate. Go to 5 years on that 390 mil. That's 1,950,000,000.00, and so on.

  • In the 90s the # of US horses slaughtered declined sharply. According to USDA records345,700 horses were slaughtered for export in 1990; ten years later in 2000 that number was 50,400. The # of horses slaughtered yearly dropped by as many as 79,000 and there was no rash of unwanted horses.

  • Okay folks, I own horses, I don't eat horses.I am pro slaughter. I have figured the cost of taking care of a horse properly (at the low end) and it is $3900.00 annually, that doesn't include unexpected health problems, accidents or training.

  • You know the old saying "If you want to play, you have to pay"?

The real problem is overbreeding, which groups like the American Quarter Horse Assn (a pro slaughter group) promote.

  • I agree with the overbreeding part. You do know that surogate mares are allowed? What about the cloning?Folks are barking up the wrong trees.

  • Just thought I'd let you know AQHA is not pro slaughter

  • Thank you so much Martha Stewart. My RESCUE & PMU horses are thanking you too for helping to spread the word about horse slaughter. Without people who cared, they would all have been dinner for some rich folk overseas! Donka Wonk sends a special donkey kiss to ya too (he a foster in my home too). We love ya!

  • Thank you Martha and Susan for a great show, I have been involved with horse rescue for a short while but because of a beloved horse named Barbaro. Thank you for airing this program I will continue to write and call my representatives and the senators to support S.311. Thanks again!

  • BRAVO BRAVO MARTHA!!!!! I'm in tears! I've been fighting aganst horse slaughter for 5 years and have been waiting for someone in the public eye with a show to help us win this battle! Thank you so much for sharing the legislation with the general public who will help now that they know! MAY GOD BLESS YOU FOR HELPING HIS ANIMALS! pj

  • Well should we stop slaughtering hogs and cattle now too? They have feelings too. People need to stop trying to be so politically correct in this country. You don't think the same thing happens to hogs and cattle before they get slaughtered. I do own horses. If we can't race them anymore then they can be sold to the amish for buggy horses. But if they are broken down then what are we supposed to do go broke feeding the damn things till they finnally die. Wake up people!!!!!!!

  • Uh no. We eat hogs and cattle in the US since those are culturally acceptable parts of our diet. Among the animals we DO NOT eat are dogs and horses.

There is a large contingent of horse owners and industry groups who support the slaughter ban. Get a clue.

  • Do u by any chance eat chinese? You are probably have horse or dog or cat or all of the following are made? If u would like to take care of about 10,000 head of the broken down horses that we can not afford to then i would gladly haul them to your front door. If you have ever taken care of livestock on a daily basis, then your opinon might actually matter to me. haha

  • I tend to prefer Thai food. I am a horse owner BTW (2 horses). I also make charitable contributions to a couple of horse rescues.

The Thoroughbred and Standardbred breed groups have figured out the concept of retiring their horses without resorting to slaughter.

If you have 10,000 horses u cant afford, it sounds like you're overbreeding...

  • On the "10000 head of horses" remark.

I remember a fellow named Trent Loos was going to ship all the "unwanted, broken down horses" to Bo Derek (a supporter of the slaughter ban). He ended up with a bunch of stick horses since he had a difficult time rounding up real ones.

It just shows how the pro-slaughter side is all talk and no substance.

  • to Farmboy: If you can't afford to keep your horses until they die a natural death or are euthanized, then you shouldn't own horses. It's call "responsibility".

How dare you use up your horse and then discard him or her like an old sweater. They are sentient beings that WORKED FOR YOU!

I guess we know your real name, i.e., Judas!

  • Farmboy, you are SO typical of the ignorant louts who promote horse slaughter. What the heck does horse slaughter have to do with cattle & hogs? I'm a small farmer myself and I support my local farmers who DO NOT send horses to slaughter! This isn't about all the propaganda that you folks keep spouting. It's about greedy people who want to make a quick buck at the expense of the horses. Get a grip & stick with what you know.

  • The show was most excellent! Kudos to all who participated, Martha earned a gold star for her boldness where many fear to tread. I love her courage. Thank you to Betsey for recommending Equine Advocates and to Susan Wagner who has tirelessly devoted herself to the rescue and protect of American equines. God bless all of you! The show was excellent, really, I found no flaws, just like Martha and it was in good taste. It was a good thing!

  • Martha Stewart and her crew should be commended for not being "afraid" to help make the public aware of the curelty inflicted on American horses in feedlots and slaughterhouses, and Susan commended for her graceful presentation as well as for the work she does.

  • Thank you Martha Stewart for being a trail blazer by getting the word out in the mainstream media about the horrible business of horse slaughter! Your compassion and forward thinking to help these horses has earned you a front row seat in heaven!

    Thank you for your blankets!

Please call your senators and representatives to vote YES for S.311 to end the transport of horses across the US borders to be sent to slaughter for foreign human consumption.

  • Bravo to Martha Stewart for asking us to call our Senators and our Representative to vote for the ban on horse slaughter. She joins Willie Nelson, Paul Sorvino, and over 3000 veterinarians in calling for an end to this barbaric practice. I'm calling my Senators and Representative in Washington tomorrow to help our American horses!!

  • God bless you Martha for allowing the EA spread the word on horse slaughter! We have had enough and it's time to give back to the horses and save them from this hell on earth known as slaughter.

  • Fantastic, so much thanks to Sue Wagner and Martha Stewart!

Let's get the word out there, call your reps and senators we need to end this barbarism.

  • Thank you, Martha, for having this segment! And for donating your blankets.

Please, everyone, contact your senators and reps as it says in the post below, and end the slaughter of American horses!

  • Thank you Martha, Betsy and especially to Susan for speaking up for the horses. Horse Slaughter is not a humane end for your horse. 70% of Americans want it to end. Please call, fax, email your Senators to support S.311 and your Representatives to pass H.R.503 to end the transport of American horses to Mexican and Canadian slaughterhouses.

  • Wonderful! What else can I say??? Simply wonderful. Thank you.

  • This is fantastic. I am so happy that Marth not only put this on but ran it as the first segment. Education is key to getting the AHSPA passed. Thank you Martha
