Poe wrote the first detective story, and created the format used by Doyle for Holmes. The Purloined Letter was a follow-up to the very first detective story, entitled Murders In the Rue Morgue. Poe paved the way for Doyle and Agatha Christie. Poe was the first, but Doyle and Christie perfected it.
