The only thing more annoying than a solid 8 pin is a 8-10 or 7-9 split. Along with the 8 pin by itself, I've left both those splits on solid pocket hits, and it's even more annoying than leaving a solid 8 pin!
The solid 8 pin and solid 9 pin have cost me a pair of 300 games. The first one was a tournament years ago. I had the first 10 in a row and the 11th ball I left the solid 8 pin. I made the spare and then left a 4 pin for a 288 game. The 2nd time I had the first 9 in a row and left the 9 pin. I went on to shoot a 279. i am still looking for my first 300 game.
I remember the great Earl Anthony (a lefty) was going for a perfect game on national TV sometime in the late 1970s, and left the 9-pin standing for a 299. I guess this must have been exactly what happened to him. Unfortunately, I can't find a video for that shot. Anyone else remember this or know of a video of it?
@ncmtman I wasn't alive at the time, but Earl did that in the 1974 Cleveland Open in a match against Johnny Petraglia. Unfortunately, I have not found any video of this match.
The fact that the headpin took out the 5 before the ball got there is irrelevant. The 8 pin is the only pin that the ball hits directly without bouncing off other pins and taking them out. It means that you need hook your bowl more, to change the angle of entry and the ball will take it out. Same with lefties, although theirs is the 9 pin that the ball directly takes out by itself without a pin hitting off of others and taking them out.
@wiiman0001 .... I think you are not correct. All the videos I've seen of right-handed bowlers leaving the 8-pin standing on a "perfect" pocket hit, the ball does not take out the 8-pin. The ball always deflects to the right of the 8-pin. Look at some of the other super slow motion shots on youtube, and you'll see. Even a "perfect" pocket strike, the ball deflects to the right even on a sharply breaking hook. I believe the 5-pin or the 2-pin usually should take out the 8-pin.
@ncmtman crankers with about a 15 or 16 pound ball, the ball will hook right into th 1-3 pocket and takes out the 5 and the ball will keep rolling into the 8, people with a moderate amount if hook the ball with roll into the 1-3, hit the 5 then the 5 will take out the 8 and the ball will deflect into the 9. Another youtuber and myself were talking about the pin reaction when a cranker hits the 1-3 pocket versus a bowler who is not a cranker, but throws a moderate amount of hook.
I can leave the 8 pin throwing it straight or throwing a big looping hook. It's got to be excessive ball speed to side roll ratio that causes this to happen. I know I tend to have little axis tilt and that makes the ball want to continue forward even after I rotate it a bunch and throw a big looping hook. I'm just not comfortable with my thrmb on the side of the ball before it comes out to rotate.
I hit the pocket almost straight to the back, and I always leave 10 pins... My coaches don't know what's up; everybody says my shots are perfect but it's like it's glued down...
@LoDork Get different coaches and tell people to stop tellinf you your shots are perfect, because they aren't. Grab a heavier ball, you will get more pin action that way, also try a differnt angle to the pocket. Hook it more, hook it less, just practice and try out different things, what is most comfortable of course, but ulitmately either you are not getting the right entry angle to the pocket, or you need to grab a heavier ball. If you're already at 16 pounds, try a 15.
I left three 8 pins in one game last night. I leave alot of 8 pins in general. What can I do? I read that if the ball goes through the 5 pin instead of deflecting over through the 9 then you will leave 10 pins. Is this also true for 8's?
@eriklovessoaps no the 8 pin is the only pin that the ball must take out by itself, it has no help from any pins at all, what you could try is changing your entry angle to the pocket, this will make it so your ball does not go right past the 8, if the lanes are dry, move right and throw it slower, if they are more oily, move left and throw it faster. or you can change the weight of your bowling ball try going to a heavier ball if possible, if you already a 16, i'd try a 15 then.
The main cause and can be seen in this video is a ball that finishes just before hitting the pocket. The ball comes in flat nad drives the head pin back instead of to the side.
This guy who bowls with me was going for 2 perfect games in a row. he had the first 22 in a row but on the 11th frame of the second game he left a STONE 8. i was amazed
The pins aren't lighter, the bowling balls are just hitting harder because they are reactive resin. Back in the 1980's it was Urethane bowling balls. Today its reactive resin.
lol the coach at my bowling centre says the only way you leave any spare is from a bad shot and i mentioned this leave and he said it must have been a bad shot if you left that (obviously this coach is a moron)
I always think of this as the pins way of flipping you off. Especially painfull when it cost me 3 perfect games. LoL guess I have to settle for the 299 ring. :o)
When I leave a stone/solid 8 I myself put my hands on my hips and go "THANKS A LOT!!!.... You've gotta be kidding!", Then after regrouping and humbly (sort of) laughing it off, I end up converting the spare.
To this day, it is THE ONLY true tap for a right-hander, you lefties would leave the stone 9 on a perfect shot in the 1-2 (just envision looking at this in a mirror and you'll see what I'm talking about). THE WORST BREAK in our great sport.
Has anyone ever left a 6-pin on a medium pocket hit (right hander)? I have done it several times including other combinations with the 4-pin, 7-pin, and 10-pin. The ball takes the 3-pin straight back and usually just grazes the 6-pin but not enough to knock it down. The 3-pin goes off the 9-pin and takes out the 10-pin. I have seen it almost stand but have never seen anyone else leave it. I keep waiting for it to happen on TV to see the reaction of the player and announcer.
yeah i left a couple of times that over in OCC, singapore. something to do with old lanes i'd guess. no real answer why that only hapens in a few houses. for me, i've only seen them on amf synthetics.
Those are just offspots caused by a weak tap from the 3 pin. I hate when people bring up a "pocket" 6 pin leave. If it leaves the 6 pin then it obviously wasn't a pocket shot but a weak high flush shot or bad luck wash out.
Every time I'm left with that solid 8 pin, I look bewildered with my arms outstretched. I tell myself how can I throw a better ball than that? I guess the breaks even out in the long run, because in the next frame, you can hit the head pin dead center and still strike.
Wonderful video!!! Thank you for revealing some deeply hidden secrets about the game. 5 stars all the way! Even in super slow motion, it's hard to believe what you see with a solid 8.

imagine if you got this when you were 1 strike away from 10 300 games in a row

imo stone 8s or 9s are worse than ringing 10s; btw idk why i tend to leave 10 pins more likely when its a perfect pocket hit, but i always high flush

I've been bit by this pin at the worst possible time about a half-dozen times. There just doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it.

think the pins are much lighter now a days... the ball pushes the 1 pin against the 5 pin, after the 1 pin deflects on the 2 pin..

@Astromchaser If you left a nine pin, it wasn't a perfect pocket hit, it was high.
erinlara 1 year ago
@erinlara The ball went right past the nine by like a half an inch while everything else went right in the pit.
Astromchaser 1 year ago
@erinlara right. Unless they're a lefty of course lolz
wiiman0001 1 year ago
Uh, it's not perfect if you leave a nine, as the ball is s'posed to take out the nine so you are using to much hand for the line you are playing.
danglywang 1 year ago
@Astromchaser that is impossible. The pocket is the 1-3-5-9 your ball is coming in too high.
