O Fortuna is a song (given new music by Carl Orff in 1937) from a medieval manuscript, called Carmina Burana, and is meant to be performed with the other songs.

The meaning of the film is roughly that relying on fate (the people praying to fate in the beginning) always ends in death and sorrow, as the fates dance and enjoy death at the end.
