I just finished watching the biopic "Joni Mitchell: Woman of Heart and Mind" on Netflix Instant and learned so much about my all-time favorite artist. After Charles Mingus (jazz legend) heard this album, he called her from his deathbed to ask her to collaborate on his last project. Her management begged her not to do it, "you'll drop into obscurity" - she didn't mind that. What great music followed!!!
This is one of the greatest albums of all time. Lyrically and musically this music has such amazing power and beauty. I could play this for hours and hours. What a huge pity there doesn't seem to be a complete live performance of this album on film anywhere
I know what she means. But that's under high secrecy, High security. where peaceful waters flow x2.Usually when Joni repeats a line like that, it has 2 meanings. The second being a life long problem. Oil spills, gas leaks.......

Blackkendoll, you have wonderful taste in music. I was a drummer in the 70's'til I heard Song to a Seagull, then I picked up guitar. She literally changed my life. Thanks for putting these great songs on here.
this is half a great album. but cuz its a double that adds up to one great album. id keep this song, otis and marlena, dreamland on side one and paprika plains on side 2, if there were still vinyl lps. the rest i could live without. not that theyre terrible or anything.
Thanks so much for posting these wonderful songs from "Don Juan's Reckless Daughter." Look for versions of the original folk song this is based on by Joan Baez and others, "Come all ye fair and tender maidens." (The Kingston Trio sang it, too.)
The first two verses are JM's creative re-write of two traditional songs, "Poor Wayfaring Stranger" and "Come All You Fair And Tender Ladies," the former American and the latter English. 3rd verse sounds to me like JM original, but not sure. The final verse blends two more traditionals, "If I Had Wings" and "The Water Is Wide." I hadn't known that JM was still drawing from real folk songs this far along in her career. Great stuff.
I love this album...Otis & Marlena is another favorite but I can't find it on youtube. Thanks blackkendoll82 for your postings of my goddess of music (along with Aimee Mann)
@bizthin on this album, Jaco brought his band's (Weather Report), percussionists, drummers, and sax player, Wayne Shorter with him, and they played on The Tenth World and Dreamland, which also included Chaka Khan...
I really like the way she works her way up and down the guitar on this entrancing work of art she performed for this album. Amazing that so few people have discovered this. Sheer ingenuity.....Thanks for all the great postings.
Joni is a Magician of the highest order. Her guitar playing is pure MAGIC. She knows music like few people do. There is nothing about her work that she isn't completely involved with and aware of. The depth of her is simply amazing. I have been a "High Priest" of the Joni Mitchell Fan Club since her first album!!
This is one of my absolute favorite Joni songs; thanks for sharing! The first time I heard it I was so stunned that I sat silent and motionless for the longest time...
wow... i actually wrote a term paper on joni mitchell's lyrics (as literature) and i focused on this piece as the afterword. i love it so much. thank you.
somebody please post Paprika Plains. Please.

"If Id only seen through the silky veils of ardor
What a killing crime this love can be
I would have locked up my heart
In a golden sheath of armor
And kept its crazy beating
Under strictest secrecy
High security"
Just beautiful...
