I heard that this cartoon was actually NOT animated by Disney. Since Walt Disney Productions had their hands full with other things, they had to outsource this short to the MGM animation department run by Hugh Harman and Rudolf Ising (both of whom used to work for Disney in the 1920s, actually).

Actually they had the idea to do The Little Mermaid back in the 30's. They were going to do it after Snow White, but it somehow ended up getting passed over for a long long time.

@PorkersaPigeon Good question....This is just a guest, but maybe the animators thought that since seals are mammals and need to breathe eventually, that they couldn't technically last that long in the bottom of the ocean to make good circus animals.

Oh my god, I remember watching this when I was a child! It was the cutest things. Now-a-days, when people see "butts" or any kind of nudity, they automatically claim the artists/owners "pedophiles" or "perverts". A: I am fairly certain those comic relief starfish were supposed to be read as if they were black-- same exaggerated lips, "buffoonery" as racist cartoons of the time. Compare to say "Down in Dixie" to 4:20-4:40 or so in this video. Note all the merbabies are clearly white, and possessed of a very peculiar anatomy (tails and buttocks). All this is very weird.
