  • I like this better than Water Babies.

  • walt disney made this toon just for a modern society, look at those kids, all of them are blonde !

  • I always viewed the ending to this as disturbing. I mean, the merbabies technically died when they left the water.

  • What was the moral to this?

  • They made octopus' look like elephants... So cool

  • Brings back memories :D love it

  • This is creepy on so many levels.. But I still like it (:

  • Merbabies never die! They just pop at 5pm and are reformed at 6am the next day. It's really quite logical.

  • did they all just die at the end?>

  • An invasion of ginger mermidgets!

  • oh Disney and their re-used clips (:

  • Anyone else get a goofy smile?

  • Why can't we go back to the simplicity of short cartoons like these? Screw Hanna Montana and the overproduced sequels!

  • I heard that this cartoon was actually NOT animated by Disney. Since Walt Disney Productions had their hands full with other things, they had to outsource this short to the MGM animation department run by Hugh Harman and Rudolf Ising (both of whom used to work for Disney in the 1920s, actually).

  • @wileyk209zback

Right you is. It's the only short that's true of, though, unless you count "Winnie the Pooh and A Day for Eeyore" 45 years later.

  • @Marbles471 Not to mention "Winnie the Pooh Discovers the Seasons," also by Rick Reinert Productions

  • @wileyk209zback

Forgot that one! When I found it for the first time on YouTube, I could tell right away----the character designs were the same as "Eeyore's."

  • WTF

  • If WB was good at making us laugh with their Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies, then Disney was brilliant at making us feel warm inside. Every time I hear the music in this cartoon, it almost brings a tear to my eye!

  • Aw the old cartoons are awesome

  • @daakuivory

The whole "Walt Disney hated Jews" thing is pretty much an urban myth. It's not supported by any credible evidence. But just like the "frozen after death" myth, people keep spreading it around anyway. (Family Guy hasn't helped lately either....)

  • whos cartoons are these, i only know the ones who make looney toons, mickey mouse, i cna barely make out the title screen info

  • they didnt die, they are "reborn" everymorning like shown in the begining

  • poor merbabies died T_T

  • that baby snail is responsible for the deaths of about 15 merbabies...

  • They are Bubble Guppies

  • lol elephant octopuses! 2:14

  • there is no racism in this...have you ever heard of clowns...they have red lips...

  • the octopus has 6 legs... lol

  • 22 people got flung from the line

  • did any one besides me actually notice that the octopii in that show only had six legs?

  • @javabeanbag That's right. Pretty improper for something called an OCTopus, isn't it?

  • I am soo confused...

  • I don't get it why did they die? What is the seafoam thingy?

  • this kinda sucks but it is really cuite

  • the whole circle of life seafoam thing is classic Little Mermaid tale

  • I did not get it

  • they are so cute

  • This is really cute

  • i love the part where the snail gets out of the whole and uses its antennae as hands :)

  • @blurryskyline Whale.

  • I don't think they die!! Maybe they just turn into bubbles and then just become merbabies again (^.^)

  • I wanna kill that snail

  • Why did the merbabies have to die? :(

  • Where are the red head merbabies?! :(

  • Do me a favor for those bashing this amazingly put together and well-drawn adorabley cute cartoon and GO WATCH THE CRAP THEY PUT ON AS CARTOONS FOR OUR CHILDREN TO SEE NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! Remember when Grandma and Grandpa said tv would melt our brains? THE SHIT THEY PUT ON AS CARTOONS FOR OUR KIDS TO SEE NOW MAKES ME BELIEVE IT!

  • lovely combination of image and sound... they don't make them like this anymore

  • the water in the ending looks real

  • lol what the heck? XD

  • I love the old cartoons that don't really have a point to them. They're just existential and cute with snappy music.

  • wait i dont follow the end their gone

  • @bluelightsabber2 because mermaids come from seafoam and become seafoam again when they die. Didn't you see at the beginning they were all seafoam and changed into mermaids?

  • @JackAlexandrine How did they die?

  • @MegaPeacockman I GUESS WHEN THE WHALE SNEEZED, THE BUBBLES THEY WERE CAUGHT IN BROUGHT THEM TO THEIR PREMATURE DEATH WHEN THE BUBBLES HIT THE SURFACE. I THINK ONCE THEY WENT UNDERWATER, THEY WERE NEVER TO RETURN TO THE SURFACE AGAIN...

  • I actually remember watching this! My fave part was the babies covered in jewlery but what an odd ending. Wasn't too happy about that then and even now. Very peculiar.

  • boring

  • Snail Seals and Elephant Octopuses are too cute.

  • This reminds me of Ponyo!

  • Keep in mind that this was hand drawn. Not made in Flash like today's cartoons.

  • i rly like this... :P

  • man that has got to be the best place ever. if i had to live there id do it. an underwater fantasy where all you do is watch shows and play on your ipod. fun.

  • I like the little snail/seal guy :)

  • very nice thanks for upload

  • 2:25 : a Dumbo octopus? I suppose Disney probably would take this idea for his 1941 production.

  • @foolishginger Wish I could give you more than 1 thumbs up!

  • those merbabies are adorable!

  • thanks for uploading this! I loved it when a little kid!

  • lol they all died in the end...

  • wait in the end did the merbabies die?

  • @mspudds22 Haha, no, at night time they turn back into seafoam and go to bed. :P They come out of the foam during daytime to play.

  • @mspudds22 I think it's a play on the original little mermaid...she turned into seafoam at the end of the book

  • SEA MONKEYS!!!!

    haha

  • @waddlewundr

    lol!!!

  • I miss this art style, I wish cgi would go away.

  • I LOVED this cartoon when I was little! My Grandma would put this in when I was younger. ^^

  • Thank you for posting this! This kind of cartoon gives me the warm and fuzzies from when I was a little kid. True Classic!

  • @foolishginger

I thought they were clowns, too. They (starfish) played the clown-type role in the film.

  • 5:51 Monstro? Is that you? What happened to you man, you way more mellow when you were younger.

Hehehe I can see the little mermaid similarity alright, but I also see some Ponyo references too. Hundreds of millions of redheaded, indistinguishable mer-children swimming around.....

  • dat ass

  • i know what you mean. people come on this is a pure innocent Disney classic. so don't deface it with all your perverted minds and what nots.

  • life.....death people shouldnt speak so much

  • Im so glad I missed that comment about butts and racism- people are so stupid sometimes. thanks to the internet, people think we all want to know every stupid thought that goes through there head. cant anyone just enjoy a classic? seriously...

Just remember everyone- opinions are like butt holes, everybody has one... and some stink!!

  • The only thing I see is a classic Disney episode made with the creativity and colors and music (no, it's not Alan Menken, but oh well) only Disney can produce. Didn't hint any pedophilia or racism at all. What a pleasure to watch after so long!!

  • Something as magical as this can really happen if you look at it right, it seems.

  • when was this one made? Before or after The Little Mermaid?

  • @ketterashley this was made waaaaay before The Little Mermaid was even thought of.

  • @paramorechick18

Actually they had the idea to do The Little Mermaid back in the 30's. They were going to do it after Snow White, but it somehow ended up getting passed over for a long long time.

  • What ISN'T cute about widdle baby booties? *giggles* Oh, that's adorable!

  • very very beautifull^^

  • This was so beautiful and so creative. I love classic Disney. It was such a delight to watch it.

  • omg, totally cute and entertain

  • So cute :3

  • you can't beat the classic cartoons

  • so cute!

  • Nintendo must have been inspired by this. Both the themes and music from the water worlds in the Super Mario series seems to be somewhat influenced by this.

  • they were so cyute, the ending was sad.

  • all so very cute maybe they looked at this for reference for the little mermaid?

  • enjoyable :)

  • so many little baby butts! hahaha

  • thank you for uploading!

  • the ending is sad : (

  • Oh so that's how merbabies are born. From SEA FOAM. Yay! now I know. :)

  • Excellent idea of Disney's because in my opinions, short cartoons didn't exoplore underwater often enough.

  • how come they all look the same ?

  • @birdsonsa39395 Racist!

  • i just cry becuase this is sooooooooooooooooo good i=and look what we have today dumb ass miley crues

  • Am I reading the answers right? Are people actually comparing showing these merbabies buttcheeks with peadophilia? Are people searching for racism in a cartoon video?

Honestly, the human species is digging its own grave when classics are to be tainted with the disturbed and dark world we have today.

If I think a baby is soft, does that mean I'd rape it? If I draw a picture of a friend from Kongo and add his naturally thick lips, does that mean I'm a racist?

    Honestly..cut it out.

  • @Bastarden No it doesn't mean you're a racist, but if they drew every black person that way, which they did often, can you really blame anyone if they're offended?

  • @Bastarden i agree. we should all be positive and be blessed that we are fortunate to have these things. do octopuses have the internet? no. we have a gift of intelligence. if were not going to use it properly, then we dont deserve it.

  • @Bastarden I agree. People should just see this for what it is, which in my honest opinion is just a mermaid equivalent of cherubim.

  • Comment removed

  • @Bastarden yeah because someone from any place looks just like a cartoon gtfo at least be real

  • I love how they were so creative

  • cute cartoon

  • aw they all died at the end: (

  • @Ghostmonsters I dont think they died.......at the beginning the bubbles turn into merbabies, and at the end, the merbabies turn into bubbles... it's some kind of symbolism but they aren't dead, more like never existed. xP

  • Why use snails....as seals.....when seals.....live in the ocean...

  • @PorkersaPigeon Good question....This is just a guest, but maybe the animators thought that since seals are mammals and need to breathe eventually, that they couldn't technically last that long in the bottom of the ocean to make good circus animals.

  • @morphississ Besides that seals are bigger than those merbabies, so they wouldn't have worked as well for them.

  • @foolishginger he's known in the industry for having a mouth like a trucker,tho..

  • beautiful thank you so very much for this posting i love these so much i lost my mom in 07 and they remind me so much of her

  • 2:30 wow, totally like Jungle Book!

  • why did the silly symphonies end? shame on you disney! get rid of the dumb mickey mouse clubhouse and make cassic cartoons. now everybody thinks disney was always gay. if i were disney id make "the trumpet of the swan" because that retared tristan screwed it up.

  • @Burromovie the silly symphonies I believe ended in the 40s. Makes sense cause a lot of productions were delayed due to financial trouble and pressure from the war efforts.

  • @ajmrowland the silly symphonies ended in 1939 actually, the last one was "the ugly duckling" (good ending for the ss). but in 1943, disney began the series again except they renamed them "special cartoons".

i consider ferdinand the bull a silly symphony and the other ones too, evn though there not labled them they still are at heart :)

  • the music is similar to peter pan...

its funny that this began work as snowbabies, in 1936, then it was shelved because it had no plot and it's original writer, walt kelly, couldnt think of anything, i have a sketch from snowbabies. then rudy ising came and looked at the vaults and fixed up snowbabies and renamed it merbabies and most of snowbabies ideas were trransfered here.

  • The older Disney stuff had class. The newer stuff feels so plastic and manufactured to sell happy meals and junk.

  • aaah... it's so easy to offend people nowadays

    add fat lips= it's rascist!!!!!!!!!!

add butt cheeks on little merbabies = it's pedophilia!!!!

it makes me giggle, besides that i find this short amazing

every little bubble animated and every character move dynamicly, not cliche' or stiff poses

  • It's Monstro!!! :D

  • they're so adorable!!! XD

  • i love this! such adorable baby mermaids!! :D

  • @foolishginger AMEN!!!

  • This reminds me of Ponyo ^.^

  • Nice quality animation, although but toooo schmaltzy for my taste. Technicolor looks outstanding too. This is a textbook example of how the Silly Symphonies were like the R&D tools for the studio, each like a foreshadowing mini Fantasia. Thanks for posting.

  • aaaaaawww, I love the elephant/octopus

  • So THAT'S Where merbabies come from. I always wondered how they reproduced.

  • coming from a 14 yr old i remember watching these late at night as a kid i found them very amusing and i still love them

  • @getdownandboogie Yes. It was from the song, "At the Codfish Ball." Clips from this cartoon were used for that particular musical number for "Disney's Sing-Along Songs Volume 6: Under the Sea."

  • i cartoni di una volta sempre i migliori

  • Oh my god, I remember watching this when I was a child! It was the cutest things. Now-a-days, when people see "butts" or any kind of nudity, they automatically claim the artists/owners "pedophiles" or "perverts". Honestly; it's not a big deal, they're children mermaids, when you come out of your mother, a whole bunch of people usually see you naked, so it's not a big deal if a bunch of cartoon mermaids have their bums showing.

  • memories in the cornner of my mind....:-p

  • @thegoatgodpan , are you a pedophile and racist since you see it in a CARTOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON???? Nobody I know, black, woman, man, has said the same thing about this cartoon...go watch Oprah Winfrey won't ya.

  • @thegoatgodpan shut up

  • Wonder if merbabies would make good grouper bait?

  • Thanks for loading - a rare gem I've never seen before and a big fan of the earlier Disney

  • I am in love with that baby snail

  • thank you so much I loved it.

  • I remember this when I was a little kid! So cute!

  • i like it

    byee

  • I remember watching this when I was younger. Their little behinds are so adorable, and it is such a classic Disney cartton. <3

  • I still love this. Probably because I'm a pisces and drawn to anything water related.

  • @BeatlesFetish09

    Pisces for the win!

  • Thank you.

  • it DOES say that in aladdin

  • ummm no its actuall peadophile its just u americans had sloppy seconds and spell everything different

  • If you don't like him so much, why don't you so much as not comment?

  • @Seech7: I don´t understand, what do you mean? Is there something in the movie "Aladin"? Who takes his clothes off? xD Please explain

  • Comment removed

  • @daakuivory Hate to be the bearer of bad news but its Aladdin. But right on! Hate Walt not Disney ;P

  • i still have the video of this, i love it :D

  • lmao at their little buttcracks. did anyone else notice that the octophants only had six tentacles?

  • One of my absolute favorites. Thanks

  • I dunno. Little baby bumbs are in three that i see so far, little hiawatha, wynkin blinkin and nod, and this one...Maybe they just thought it was cute??

  • I love the octophants so much
