  • yeah, probably i'm just not interested in those kinds of novels any more. i'll try to read different types of fictions.see if i can find something i like. thank u so much for ur help!!! i did learn a lot to improve english from this video and your comments:)

  • I used to read really fast when I read chinese, becasue i love reading the chinese novels since I was little. i was #1 in chinese class when i was in china,so i understand that the most efficient way to improve both my writing and reading skill is to read a lot. However, when i try to read the english novels, i find myself just fall asleep, even for those I've already read in chinese version. can u tell me if you have faced this problem before? if so, can u tell me how you solved it? thank u :)

  • @elyssa19luna I'm guessing you find it a bit boring to read the same novels you've read in Chinese because you've already read them! Also, your interests might have changed over the years and it could be that you just don't see the same books as interesting as a couple of years ago. I, for example, wanted to re-read a book recently that I read some 4 years ago - but I just couldn't. People change, and so does their taste in reading, so I'd suggest you to find something new!

  • as soon as i understand that word, my brain would automatically pick a chinese meaning (i'm a chinese) for me. and then, i still memorize that word in chinese. what can i do??? i think it's probably because the definitions are usually very long, and my brain just pick an easy way for me :(

  • @elyssa19luna I guess we can't completely eliminate our native languages during English learning/improving process. Still you have to try to think only in English and learn new vocabulary by mimicking native English speakers. Collocations and word groups are crucial in this process and you won't even need to look up the corresponding meaning in your language if you improve your English contextually.

  • @EnglishHarmony thank you so much for the advice!!!:)

  • @elyssa19luna No problems! ;-)

  • @elyssa19luna Well I think it is still doable. I am Chinese as well but I think I have already pass the stage that my brain would automatically try to pick a Chinese word for any new English word. I found it's amazing that acquiring a new language is like building up a new personality. I don't talk the things I talk in Chinese in English and vice versa. Maybe it's like what Robby said we can't completely eliminate that but we can definitely minimize that to a certain point.

  • @StraysSylveri I think I'm getting better as I read more and more english novels and articles. now I can learn some new words when I'm studying AP Economics without looking up the words in English-Chinese dictionary. I guess i just need to read more in english and get used to it.

  • @StraysSylveri And since you mentioned that you are also from China, can you give me any advice to improve my reading speed? i have two AP classes right now and they are all about reading. it's true that i can work harder to get good grade, but i do want to read faster and save more time:)

  • @elyssa19luna I don't know if there is shortcut for that other than reading more. For me I can read very fast but seldom do that. Even when I read Chinese, unless I am in a rush or something, I usually read at a slow to medium speed. This is a habit somehow acquired in my high school from reading literature ;\

  • @elyssa19luna In terms of your questions, I guess the most practical way is not to read the whole materials but find other books/notes that are shorter but cover the crucial part for your exams.

  • hi! i really like your videos! as an international student, i have some difficulties in learning english. however, using translation all the time seems to be my biggest problem right now. Many people kept telling me that i have to start thinking in english or memorizing words in english. i tried to use the way you taught, but i found out that when i tried to undersatnd words in a sentence, i can probably understand a new word's meaning by understanding the context.

  • hi

  • @hager264 I'm a Latvian.
