@greyhound4211 These days I'm using an IMAX-2000 with GPK, 20' mast at the peak of my roof with a 3' heavy duty tripod & 4 guy wires. Ground to tip 60' using 400 series coaxial cable with silver plated teflon insulator PL-259's. Thanks for asking and take care...Bulldog
I have been blessed with a nice brother that once was in the hobby but after he got out of the Army had other interests. This radio was stored on and off for about 10 years before he gave it to me! This radio will be 28 years old as of March 2010!
I have another question for you bulldog I found a Cobra 2000 for sale for $225.00.
But the power button has to be tapped a few times before it turns on and one of the metters needle sticks. But it dose come with the origanal external speeker. I asked hime if he would go down on the price he said no. Is this a good deal?
I been talkin on the c.b for a good while now and I was thinking about buying a cobra 2000. With the Cobra 2000 can you talk on regular channels like the ones on my cobra 29?
im n the process of geting my ham also but after reading these reviews i think ham operators are juss a bunch of assholes who think their shit dont stink. well it does. kiss it ham operators.
what are you talking about?? OchrismongrelO isn't a ham operator... he sounds too immature, Otherwise he would know that using profane language reflects poorly on the amateur community. He is just some slob looking to start a fight.
So Zach, we would love to have you in the amateur community, I am sure you will like it. I am into Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ares) and the feeling you get when you assist someone who is in need is an amazing experience.
....now i can see what i was hearing on my superstar3900 overhere in Belgium around the year 2004......you guys were audiable overhere with sometimes signals over the S9!!!
what a dumb ass, I have a totally legit unit running 4 watts pep. with a 60 ft tower from base to antenna tip. And I can talk a few hundred miles when the skip rolls in.
Obviously you don't have a license to know anything. I started off as a CBer, now I am a general class, I know rule 8 section 2 states your height restriction. 60 ft from base to tip, unless located by an airport. You're just a wannabe Ham Operator. Otherwise you would know about the phenomenon known as SKIP, it is when the radio waves 'skip' on the ionosphere and drop down to a specific region. It doesn't require any wattage. Keep talking, you make yourself sound more stupid as you go.
And yea, Rule 13, section 9 does state that you aren't supposed to communicate with any station more than 250 kilometers away. But Skip is Natural. it happens, and people will talk on it because the door is open for only a couple hours.
JUST SO YOU KNOW (BECAUSE I'M SURE YOU DON'T KNOW THE MATH) 250 Kilometers is 155.3 miles, not your 130 miles as you were stating. If you have a ham license, you must have got your license out of a Cheerios box.
I have had the license for a few years, I got tired of CB because there are dumb people like you on it, so i went up where i could carry on intelligent conversation with intelligent people. Not some thirty something who thinks he is a know it all.
I am not an Asshole who goes down and annoys the people on their toys. It doesn't take anything to be a ham operator, my brother was one at the age of 12. It is only 35 questions to enter as a Tech Class, any ol moron can do it. CB is just a toy, and I personally don't care if they skip and 95.403 is long for rule 3 which is who can operate a CB station. Do you copy that "good buddy" (talking your lingo, since you're just jealous of the man for talking on "skip")
And as for "skip", 95.403 section part a subsection 8. No "skip" allowed, natural or not. Thats what the ham bands are for. If you're too lazy to get off your lazy ass and get a ham license, you have no right to talk skip.
Looking forward to hearing you guys again when the cycle kicks in. Have been on the radio for 25 years and always like hearing AM CB. Trouble is, I don't think you guys realise how far you get out over the world! BREAKER ON THE SIDE!!! UNIT 151 - MEGABLAST calling you...
I run barefoot with an IMAX 2000. Conditions dictate my sucess. If you have good equipment set up properly your chances increase. Get the antenna as high as possible, good transmission angle, low SWR and some good clean loud audio will get you out there, 73's!
wow thats pretty damn good running barefoot i was only able to shoot skip once on my bone stock president washington base ( before it became the uniden washington) but i was talking local and i had some one from nova scotia come across saying i sounded like i was local up there amazed me thats for sure
Love that radio! I got back into CB radios a few years ago. Had my first one in 1975. I just recently picked up my first 2000 GTL. Found one in great shape, (9.5 out of 10 on appearance) got a second speaker for it and Love it! Only problem is the frequency counter is stuck on 92.2000 on RX and show 0.0000 on TX. I want to find a service manual and see what I can learn about it.
161, (Night Ranger) in Northeast Missouri said that.
Hello Unit 161, Night Ranger the frequency counter issue is a common one with the older 2000's. I have the same issue. Several attempts were tried by a tech but other parts will have to be replaced. Weighing the cost I would buy a nice Dosy meter with a frequency counter, 73's!
I remember in the late 1970's how jammed the channels were with DX from morning until late at night and in the early morning hours I would get up and work Europe. I have worked many stations in Maine as well along with all of the 50 states many many times. I'm hoping the DX cycle will be a strong one. I hooked up one of my radios last night so I'm hoping for that DX.
Those were some awesome days. That is when we had our first Cobra 2000 GTL and Avanti PDL II. My brother and I were in high school. We had the same luck you did. At that time we lived in RI on a hill facing east. Just had some DX from Georgia and Alabama, 73's!
PDL 2 antennas were an awesome 2 element beam with both polarities. They were super popular and manufactured by the same people who made Moonraker. The Starduster was the groundplane of choice back in the old days . Definately fun times in our lives.
I haven't had my radio hooked up in over a year because the DX was dead. How are the conditions now? If the DX is rolling I'll hook up one of my rigs. I have an Antron 99 up approx. 100'ft in a tree. I have worked the world on it.
Thanks for the flowers. Wow Hawaii, that is a tough one for us guys here in Maine. It is amazing how the conditions can be though. Pump it up DX Land, Unit 777 is trying!
Nice old Cobra 2000GTL , can't beat the old rigs (look @ my old Belcom vid on my page)looking for a 2000GTL to go with my two 148GTL DX's. not many 2000's here across the pond in the UK!!.....Dave North Lincolnshire UK (M0ogy Ham call)
that was a sweet rig when it came out, i also had a 148GTL for the portable. i just uploaded some old skiptalk clips (in one vid), features 'Wagonburner' from LSB 27.605.
Recently we modified our Galaxy Echo/Roger Beep Base Microphone. Took the exisiting microphone & gooseneck off the the control base. Put a black body panel plug over the hole. Purchased a Radio Shack Super-Cardioid Vocal Microphone, gooseneck, and flange. Wired the microphone to the plug which the old one was and connected directly to the board. This is totally awesome. Wicked clear and loud!
