  • I think this is the hardest way to cast on

  • @MeggieCook On the contrary I thought it was ok, but then again i don't know your method ;)

  • I am a bit confused as to why you have to pull the needle out at the end. When you reinsert the needle to start over again, you are putting it right back where you took it out from.......you just need to bring the left needle forward on the last stitch instead of putting it behind the right needle and leave it where it is. Or am I missing something??

  • @lizardrules You can just bring the left needle forward, but I find it easier to start fresh for each stitch. It also makes it easier to tighten or loosen the stitch after you add it to the left needle. But you're welcome to do it that way if it works better for you. It doesn't change anything. :)

  • Oh my god. Thank you so much!

  • You make excellent videos. I am trying to learn how to knit and to be honest I have learned more in your video than I did in a classroom setting! Bravo to you! Keep making these videos please. I also think it is soooo cool that you handmade items were used in movies etc.... You are truly very talented. :)

  • @bananaislandquilts

thanks for the nice comment. please keep watching and learning. look for me on facebook too, for more tips.

  • Thank you so much for this video. My grandmother taught me how to knit when I was younger... now 18 it completely slipped my mind as to how its done. You speak clearly and explain well. :)

  • trying to learn how to knit so this video should help

  • @Georginaaa92

there's also a SLOW version that you might want to watch as well. have fun knitting.

  • Are you kidding - there are much easier ways to cast on.

  • @MamaPalma

yes, there are many ways to cast on. this is the one I learned and seems very easy to me. whatever works best for you is the one you should use. happy knitting and look for me on facebook.

  • @MamaPalma That may be true but as a beginner I've tried the easier methods and always end up casting too tight or unevenly (when I try to cast on quickly to save time). Taking the extra effort to use this method has given me a nice even row to start with that isn't too tight or too loose (like with the two-needle method). It's like Judy said - different methods work for different people. While I will still practice those, I'll be sticking with what works for me so I can move on in my learning!

  • lord, youre going way to fast.

there's another video called CASTING ON-SLOW VERSION that might work better for you. hope you'll stick with it and learn to knit.

yes, you can knit, knit, knit. that's called the garter stitch. or you can purl, purl, purl for the same look. One row knit, one row purl is the stockinette stitch. I'll bet it's gotten easier by now. Practice makes perfect. please keep watching and keep at it. look for me on facebook too.

  • Thank you for this!! This makes so much sense, I already knew how to knit and this is a lot like a knit stich, so It made sense to me!

  • I'm 20 years old, and I've been knitting for 4 or 5 years, but never learned to cast on and had others do it for me.

No one ever explained how to in a way that I understood. After watching your video a few times, I can do it perfectly. Thank you so much!

  • @suicidalsal

I'm so glad my video helped you. This is the way I learned to cast on and, to me, the easiest. Please keep watching and look for me on facebook too.

  • Hi Judy, is it correct to follow this particular way of casting on before i decide to do the knit stitch or purl stitch or ribbing? Thank you very much!!!

  • @puisakura

this is the cast on I always use, although there are others.

  • I prefer the long tail cast on. It would be nice to learn what the effects of different cast ons. Even with knitting since I was 12 yo I'm really not sure about all the different effects the cast ons have.

  • @cooksalot1

This is how I learned to cast on when I was a kid. Only recently have I heard about lots of other cast ons and eventually I'll do videos for some of them. I just automatically use this one for everything. Thanks for writing and please keep watching.

  • to SlytherinChild: There are actually 4 types of casting on and each one gives you different results. There is thumb method cast-on, long tail cast-on, casting on using cable method (shown in this video) and invisible cast-on. First two uses only one needle, last two both. The method shown here gives you strong cast-on edge, the other ones are more flexible. Invisible cast-on is probably most flexible of all, I suggest you check with pattern instructions which one to use.

  • Thank you Judy :) Christmas is coming up and I want to make something rather than buy something for my family. Lol much more heart coming from the gift lol

  • @Lifesways13

Glad to know you'll be knitting gifts. That's the best. Please keep watching and look for me on facebook too. Happy knitting.

    I am making two scarfs!!

  • @Wilsonator21x

good for you. knitting is fun, isn't it? Please keep watching.

  • This is awesome, I always wanted to know how to cast on this way.

I just have a silly question, does the type of casting on you do effect how the project you're doing looks? or are they the same? I'm just asking because a pattern I'd like to do refers to this type of casting on while i do a different kind, I'm just worried I'll mess something up if I do it the other way I know how

  • @SlytherinChild

This cast on is the one I learned when I started knitting. I never knew there were others till recently. This is the one I use for most anything. I do like the picot cast on for baby things though. Thanks for writing and please keep watching. Look for me on facebook too.

  • thank you,you really saved me....at first i was all confused,....''pull it,push it through'' and i was all like O_o??? but somehow i finally did it....but that pull it push it through is still my hardest part xDDD

  • Thank you! I've been using the long-tail cast-on, but that gets hard sometimes when making a larger item, lol.

  • @Deemom7

yes, and you don;t have to guess how long to make the tail. thanks for writing,

  • Thank you.... I have been trying to knit for the past 3 days and each time i start my second row it fails, cause I haven't been casting on properly!!

    Thanks

  • @naacarricoman

me too. you don't have to think about it. just do it!

  • i know this may be a silly question, but do you have to take out the right hand needle ( blue ), or can you leave it in and just put it under the left hand needle?

  • Thanks so much for that! I just couldn't work out how to do that from other videos. No on to learning stitches. Thanks Judy.

  • @Jagera1000

  • This is a great video. I prefer it over the other videos for learning to cast on. You made it simpler :)

  • thanks for the nice comment. please keep watching. new video yesterday.

  • Great method, I love this! Does this make one row in stockinette? I am doing a project in garter stitch, so I should check to make sure I can cast on this way

    happy knitting!

  • how are you doing now that a few days have passed? hope you're having fun. keep watching the videos. lots to learn.

  • well, learned my knit stich and purl, also the increase by knitting in front and back or purl in front and back.... it's still pretty tricky though...trying to make this purse...and some ladies i've been hanging out with told me i should try making something simpler before the purse...because i still don't recognize stitches so when i mess up...i end up ripping it all off and starting again vs fixing the mistake...i'm not good at fixing yet...but i'm trying though...THANKS AGAIN !

  • i love to knit i just finished my headband but you are going a little to fast nto to be mean or anything but yeah it really worked thx

  • this was amazing! got it perfect first time, thank you!
