  • i dont know why but my WSD 13AJ sounds nothing like yours but if i muffle it, it sounds quite similar. all the AJ snares in the world are collecters items now as YAMAHA stoped the production.

  • Great snare... I'd like to check the sound with a G1 Coated or an Ambassador Coated as batter.

  • Hey man, does the snare come with the wood hoops?

  • @MartinJohnstonDrums it does indeed! they're the yamaha vintage wood 20ply (or 19, can't remember) maple wood hoops.

  • @dave90mckeague do they crack if you rimshot a lot?

  • @masterbeat04 they can do as they're maple and its softer than hickory. one of my new snares has purpleheart hoops which are much harder.

  • @dave90mckeague jeez...good thing i haven't bought one yet...xD

  • @masterbeat04 well saying that, i had this for ages and slammed it quite a lot. It only dented a tiny bit and i kept rotating it. If you take good care of it it'll be fine and you can buy replacement hoops from gibraltar or yamaha. Its just facts though hickory is harder than maple so maple will dent and break

  • Nice press roll!!

  • i owned one of these beauties b4...really great...however i didnt like the funky overtones coming for it...it really suits akira jimbo's style and funk music but it's not very versatile for other genres..really really good drum if you play funk or fusion.

  • great

  • That snare drum is tuned to perfection, good job! The sound is incredible

  • @metalliclark thanks man! it does sound great, iv actually sold it now though to fund a bubinga/purpleheart stave shell monster! which should (hopefully) sound even better. vids up soon

  • That snare is amazing! I want one! :D

  • i have the same snare and the sount is in real greater

    I love this snare

    realy good clip

  • Great snare drum!!! Sounds great cranked up!!

  • thanks man! i tend to crank it up then gradually loosen the batter till i get a nice singing tone. Since this is a deep drum it seems to work nice!

  • would you tell me, how to tune the snare so i got the same sound as yours..?

because my snare has very long sustain..it sounds like a timbale that jimbo-san plays at his left side..

  • yeah, try using a 2-ply head. Evans make many of them from dryer (genera hd dry) to wetter (super tough)

I use the super tough dry and i recommend it to minimise high-overtones.

Tuning wise i crank up the s/s head to a B at each lug. Batter head wise, i again crank it up and tune the head to itself. i then gradually drop the pitch of the head until a definite tone is reached (listen to the vid with headphones and youll hear the tone clearly)

also, buy some decent snare wires!!!!

    thanks!

  • yeah i hated the 16 carbon strand that it came.

I immediately went with the 20 strand Blasters.

I really like how your twisted 20s sound. I might consider buying a pair. Seems like deep snares need a bit more strand to sound nice cause the depth really takes out a lot of the sensitive.

thanks for the great vid! nice to hear how other people tune their Akira Jimbo

  • @dave90mckeague I have this snare too, have a look at my video if you get the chance, I'm using the stock snare head and the control ring but it would be cool if you could tell me which of those two heads you recommend would sound close to the sound I have. I'm aiming for depth, cheers.

  • for a nice deep tone the power centre reverse dot. when you hit it in the middle you get an awesome round sound that really projects. the st dry head would also be a good choice, although may be a bit too dry!

i would also recommend getting rid of that control ring, they defo focus the tone but if you tune the right head properly you'll get such a better sound,

  • @dave90mckeague

Hi, when you menioned the wetter 2ply evans head, which exact model are you refering. I just got myself the same snare and have Evans HD Dry and 20-strand Blasters, it sounds nice and fat and it also has very good projection. However I wish I don't have the slight overtone so I don't have to put on a moongel.

  • @davis618 the hd dry is the driest head that evans make alongside the ec2 reverse dot (although i think its drier still). all heads will have a bit of ring but the hd dry has the least. what type of snare are you using? if its steel/brass it will naturall have some high end overtones that will be very difficult to get rid of. All snares will ring, but the hd dry is the best chance of ridding it. Wetter 2 ply heads include the super tough and the g2, these have quite a bit of ring but are durable

  • @dave90mckeague

Thanks for your reply. My snare is also a Akira Jimbo 13 x 7

Top head HD Dry, bottom head Hazy 300

  • Hell of a snare.
