This is NOT a critic to Bush, Yorke stated this song didn't meant that, people thought that HTTT is named because of bush 'stolen' presidency...if you are close minded/didnt understand it/never read it(1984), you definitely should find information, song from 1:48 to the end is CLEARLY related to 1984, the lyrics are almost taken from the book, as the main character refuses to accept, then he understands, need it and finnally want it. caity11bug is right. And i know it's 1984 i typed wrong.
He said that he named the album HTTT because it's a Dante quote in the hell of his Comedy, not because of Bush, but you're right about the song and his meaning.
Why are people commenting about what the song is about when thom yorke already stated what it was about? "hail to the thief is a shot at g.w. bush, yea, i used to be very confrontational and i have some of that still in me so yea i'd like to tell him if he thinks que can put the world to rights?, the world they've(bush and co.) created is something reminiscent of Orwell's novel yea"... so MATHEMATICS, COMPUTERS AND BEING HIGH? sorry you guys we're a bit off there.
because it's actually about the 1888 election. good try.
and i quote...
"Thom Yorke was quoted as saying, 'If the motivation for naming our album had been based solely on the [current] U.S. election, I'd find that to be pretty shallow.'"
It's pretty much a description of how life crushes individuality. You start wanting to put the world to rights, but the world tells you you can't. You "stay home forever" in your own world, where things can be as you want them to and you can ignore our world. But by the end of your life, you can't get that individuality back beacuse you have not paying attention.
I believe this song is about science such as mathematics, physics, computer science and how much priority we give them instead of other things. The nuclear science can destroy the world..something like that...
the video looks as if shes tripping out, perhaps 2+2=5 is symbolic to the state of mind someones in when high on drugs and nothing is making scence. however radiohead songs normally have a much deeper meaning than that so probably not
I'm pretty sure its a reference to the book 1984 were at the end the government convince the main character that 2+2=5 after hes caught having a relationship with a woman which is banned by the thought police. All very profound but i think its a dig at the present so called free nations government's for brainwashing people. Read the book, a classic!
it sounds like he is sayin menstration when he starts the first time saying payin attention
