Yes, he passed rather young. The good always do. Why?
Well, the man puffed away at four packs of those cancer sticks a day. He drank gallons of coffee and stiff, hard drinks at night. There was a history of early heart problems in his family. He died at the alleged peak of his talent. He created "The Zone" so he could have carte blanche of his fine work. The also prematurely passing Kurt Cobain said it best "It's better to burn out that to fade away."
Or seek aid from other artists. As a young artist myself, writer, I want to be great at the entire thing and get to the top on my own. Yes, a true artist does whats best for his piece and leaves his or her ego behind.
Serling hits the proverbial nail on the head here. That is a problem with some of his earliest writing for the Twilight Zone. The episodes are excellent but the characters do talk the same. The diailogue is written for one person and yet most of the characters speak the same. I noticed it in the very first episode. Still, Rod is/was an excellent writer.
I can only think of one or two scripts where he had that problem. Watch the Comedian-every character's speach is different.

A TRUE artist is willing to admit his shortcomings in his work and transcend them with a more lucid & honest vision.
Serling does just that and I commend him for it. The alternative would be arrogance, and there's NO room for that in TRUE art!

Yes...more is said and particularly to the young writer in these few minutes than in most of the rest of the interview.
