@TheSeattlehawk94 I agree. NBC sucks hard when it comes to covering the Olympic games. ABC though really set the standard on how to cover the Olympics and no one has come close to Jim Mckay. Bob Costas is awful.
The only closing ceremony I cried as it ended cause it was the end of an era in a lot of ways mostly that Bonnie Blair and Dan Jansen were not coming back. Where did that last shot of Bonnie Blair watching the fireworks come from? Did a camera crew follow her into the stands?
The next winter olympics after that was painful to watch my hero Bonnie Blair was gone.
My family went to the Opening Ceromony, froze while standing on mats, but was astounded how beautiful the venues and ceremony was.... and enjoyed the ski-jump with the torch. They spent 2 weeks there going to events, visiting relatives, and watching from the warmth of multiple homes. I wish I could have gone, but it was not meant to be. Dan Jansen (however) was a moment to remember......
Lillehammer 1994 can't be beaten. 14 days of fantastic weather and a 100.000+ crowd on every outdoor event, -not to mention several world records! Super montage - 5 stars
I agree. I have great memories of Lillehammer. The crowds and athletes made it maybe the best Olympics i've seen and i'v been watching them since about 1968 when i was a kid.
I got to meet Dan Jansen after the '94 Games.Sad to read later he and Robin divorced.Hard to also believe that Suyra Bonaly is now a US citizen.she lives and coaches in Las Vegas.I also got to meet the great Eric Heiden at a bike race 6 mos.after the Lake Placid games.
@bricjohn agreed, and I am not sure they ever can be these were the last small, and humble winter games, set in a far-away Norwegian village, snow-covered forests and pristine new-fallen snow, the simpler times of 1994, before billion-dollar security budgets, terrorists, etc... I don't think the Lillehammer games can ever been replicated... I feel privileged that these are the first winter games I truly remember... I was 11 1/2 when they happened... I have some vague memories of Albertville tho
In 1994 I cried as this ran, because I knew an amazing human experience was coming to an end. In 2009 I cry because I realize that this may be the best music I will ever hear. It's sheer perfection.
This is probably the finest piece of music I have ever heard; musician, I can relate to the score and the chords - DYNAMIC and appropriate for the 1994 Olympics. The Olympics that year were being televised during a transitional time in my life. I watched almost every aired event and felt so close to the athletes. And now to once more be able to hear the theme music is very emotional to me; I lived for the moment to watch the competition each day and dealt with my own event at the same time.
What are you guys talking about? The CBS theme sucked. ABC has the BEST coverage of the Olympics. You were all probably too young to have watched the last time ABC did the games-1988 in Calgary
It's rare that someone can challenge John Williams in any musical category, but in the category of "Olympic Themes" this gives Williams a serious run for his money.
@rjmwx81 Although the initial timpani and brass minute or so of what we've been hearing on NBC for the last several olympics is not actually John Williams. He arranged this (it's called Bugler's Dream) and then wrote a fanfare to add on to it afterwards, but the initial music is not originally Williams
Thank you for the refreshing memory of the last great Winter Olympiad where the athletes
told the story instead of the crass commercialism that eventually followed. Does anybody have a clue where I can obtain Tamara Kline's recording of this music? I thought it was outstanding when I heard in 1994 and still do.
I actually got the sheet music from Tamara. There's just one master and she does not have it so finding the actual recording itself is next to impossible, unless you work at CBS.
I heard a 15-second clip on an old reel from Bob Christianson, so maybe he has a master. I'm thinking he either produced or arranged the theme, because I hear his style at the very end of the piece.
Kudos to CBS on all of their Olympic coverage in 92/94/98. They really brought the special feelings of the Olympics into people's homes. NBC has never been able to copy this formula.
I would love to see CBS's closing montage from Albertville in 92. They used the same theme then as well. They kind of tempered it for Nagano as I recall. Actually, the last 30 seconds before this started with the closing comments from Greg Gumbel were really special and gave me goosebumps. Agreed, can't believe its been 14 years now.
Thank you Lillehammer and Norway for an amazing games!
Give CBS credit for trying something different with the music. Hearing it again brought back memories. NBC commissioned John Williams to do their own theme for the Seoul 88 games but then scrapped it and bought the rights to the theme that ABC used all those years (the one we now here every two years)
You know what? I will give CBS credit on this music. It's vastly underrated. I don't know if that theme would have saved the overall crappy coverage in Nagano (which nobody speaks of...for obvious reasons), but it was grand to hear it again. Nothing against Arnaud's Bugler's Dream or the 1984 Olympic Theme, but this is a refreshing original.
Give CBS credit for trying something different when they had those three olympics in 92, 94 and 98...at least as far as the music was concerned. That theme does bring back the memories. I do remember they got some flak for focusing too much on figure skating. But, yeah, has it really been that long ago. Time files.
That music is beautiful...but doesn't compare to the "Remember the Titans" theme NBC uses for its' closing....or the John Williams-composed theme music.
