  • Its Newcastle, its not bad driving just many drivers would not open her up till the last coaches are free of the platform, if i remember correctly there is a limit on that platform due to the camber most noise is the wheels in the curve of the track. That engine is not being opened right up even then its been taken to first notch on the excellerator then put to about a third as the train pulls off

  • it was only the deltic under power. they were not fitted wih multiple working cables

  • @meadstuart both locos WERE working, listen to the first 10 seconds the Deltic revs up and shortly afterwards the 50, you can also see the exhaust plume from both, after approx 40 seconds the 50 eases off and you can hear the turbos spooling down. The drivers normally signal to each other if the locomotives are not connected for multiple working

  • @meadstuart Just because the deltic isn't fitted with MU cables doesn't mean the 50 can't provide power it just means that both loco's need to be crewed who will keeping in contact with each other in some way it's called working in tandem.

  • What a monster! Just listen to those turbos

  • that is one hell of a railtour with some pretty rare traction :) nice vid

  • excellent!

  • I'm Must Be Getting OLD, Gone are The Days of Raw Power, GIVES ME GOOSE BUMPS.

  • What station is this, I don't recognise it?

Anyway nice filming and very good

  • this was at York heading south to London

  • @hughrobertwright newcastle der brain

  • @hughrobertwright oh yeah

  • @hughrobertwright This is Newcastle as it says in the descrption.

  • @hughrobertwright No it's not it's Newcastle by the bridge. hills and houses on a south departure.

  • @thexfactor331 Call me old-fashioned, but I tend to find important clues about the videos I'm watching on YT in the description...It's Newcastle.

  • There is 9900 HP in this lot. See video response.

Us colonials seem to appreciate massive diesels hauling heavy trains. These locos originally came from Victoria and were one of their top range locos. Sorry, very Yankee design but built locally.

Reputation of being very noisy. Thisloaded coal train really pushed them on a very long 1 in 44 grade on outskirts of Sydney.

Hope appreciate. My father came from Swindon, so I must have inherited the train lore from him.

  • Hey you guy's, my apologies on behalf of Saltashlad, Im a train driver, I have been for 23 years, I for one do not AGREE whatsoever with the above named, Train spotters, Rail enthusiasts I think your all great guy's and gall's, I've ALWAYS time for you, sadly, some of my college's are SAD idiots, but I would like to think, their in their own tiny minority!!

  • Woah!! That was a bit harsh! I thought train drivers were die hard train enthusiasts. It should be the case. If i was a train driver, i'd be a million percent passionate about the job unlike this guy but it's so hard to get into now. They only take the cream of the crop and they usually prefer graduates. Shame

  • graduates to drive a train? really? I'm not disagreeing, just suprised, the wages are not what I'd want after 3-4 years at university. I don't know if I'd be passionate about the job, there are so few classes of loco around these days, only the intercity HST remains from the good old days and those have had the hearts ripped out of them

  • he is just a jobsworth

  • jesus man, what is your problem?

im no anorack or nothing, and i just happened to be here by chance but don't you think you're being a bit harsh? So what if people like to look at trains, what harm and problems are they causing?

Think you need to get a life sann

  • He is also a sad DMU driver.......

  • Oh, he's a train driver, all right.

Of a Thomas the Tank Engine pull-along set.

  • @saltashlad . If its so sad what the fuck are u on here looking at it for?..Doubt if you,d know where to start with driving a 50 or 55 in any case, you,ve probably only ever driven some shit bog unit with a couple of bus engines strapped underneath, so fuck off and GET A LIFE yourself tosser!!

  • @saltashlad I agree that it's bad driving, but don't knock the spotters - it's only a hobby.Just like some like to spend hours watching buffoons kick a ball about, or sit on a riverbank for hours, or surfing the internet looking at YouTube..........!!

  • Good vid Mush

  • niiiiiiiice.... cheers ;-)

  • memories

  • HELLFIRE!

  • As Deltics are always (or it's recommended to) opened up gently to avoid overloading, I suppose the 50 would have been doing most of the work from a standing start, with the Deltic gradually putting on the power.

  • i'm surorised that it didn't snap the couplings

  • I suppose the couplings are designed to withstand an amount of overload...

  • @hughrobertwright The couplings are designed to deal with the load of 2000-ton freight trains and the haulage required to get them up hills. In the past at least it was possible to regularly see three locos working together on a freight.

  • A Deltic has a maximum tractive effort from rest, of 50000 lbs, a class 50's tractive effort is 48500 from a standing start. So even combined, their 98500 lbs of tractive effort would have been 15050 lbs short of a single class 59, 2 stroke, freight locomotive. The couplings had plenty in reserve.

  • Zontar hates this sort of thing...

  • I would have expected Zontar to like seeing his engines on a mainline train even if there are other classes aswell....

  • A double headed Deltic, never thought id see the day!

  • unfortunately not, it was double headed with a class 50 plus a Deltic on the front. I think there has been a double headed Deltic hauled train though probably not in recent years on the main line, apart from in Microsoft Train Simulator where I created a passenger train hauled by five Deltics!

  • RAW BRITISH POWER!!!!!!!

  • nice, i missed this year i went to morpeth to see it and it was 5 mins early i was gutted

  • Hi Hugh, good vid. We had a chat about sound quality on pocket Sony cameras up the front vestibule. Take a look at my 40145 on the Lickey taken from the lineside for the surprisingly good quality without wind noise

  • The sound on this video is pretty good as the train was not travelling too fast, you can clearly hear the turbos on the 50 especially so when the driver closes the throttle near the end of the platform, the Deltic is barely audible above all the other noise! I intend adding more videos of The Autumn Highlander, there is one of the empty train pulled by 40145 leaving Kings Cross to view now.
