Nobody at my school listened to this stuff ! Thats why I never spoke to any of the twats, I was too busy getting wrecked ! The voice of my twisted generation still haunts me !
Anyone that claims this isn't "goth" doesn't know what goth is IMO. Spooky, melancholy, poetry, uniquely strange and mysterious, this song and performance and this the music and it's tone expresses a beautiful Gothic vibe, that unfortuanately many don't quite understand....
They started in the late seventies... the only true goth band (for better or for worse) as far as I'm concerned.
It's also worth noting that while they wrote some of the darkest music they also had a great sense of humor, especially when you look at small talk stinks or lillies and remains, and unlike some other 'artists' never took themselves too seriously.
@ohfoolishworkerbee Must mention the hilarious "Nerves" from "In the flat field" . To the best of my knowledge, Bauhaus were the only "Goth" band ever to sing about fishcakes! The music press, in Britain, very deliberately chose to overlook the humour in their music and gave them a very undeservedly hard time. If ever evidence was needed that most music critics haven't a clue, their treatment of Bauhaus was it. Btw, "Go away white" was at least as good a comeback as could've been hoped for.
The first major Bauhaus appearance was at the front of "The Hunger", starring David Bowie, Catherine Denueve and Susan Sarandon, in 1983, and it's reasonable to assume that they'd been together for at least a little while then. That puts them together at least ten years before Marilyn Manson, so Marilyn, like the rest of us, grew up listening to this. This band was entirely unique - I've still never heard anything else like them. If anything could make me believe in vampires it'd be Bauhaus.
@espdkv420 I wouldn't even say he's glam metal, that would put him on the same level as Motley Crue, Skid Row, Ratt, Twisted Sister, or Dokken...and he's not up there, his music just inspires fourteen yr olds to follow his meaningless rants... o,,o So with you on the difference though, Manson is nothing like Bauhaus. The quality and the heart that went into the music of Bauhaus outdoes anything that Brian Warner can come up with.
LOL
At 1:21 to 1:25 it clearly a drumstick, and yes that sound could be produced from said instrument...a classic still thanx for posting this R.I.P. Bauhaus
Peter Murphy is not a vampire as many people think, he is a werewolf master, he always adores the moon in many of his songs, he detets vampires for sure
No man you are totally wrong if you think he is a vampire, he is a werewolf, believe me! He tries to distract many people while he is a clear werewolf but it is more clear when Peter Murphy was alone, Ash is the only vampire in this group
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Yes, he likes distracting people, he could be a vampire, a mummy... but when the full moon is clear then you´ll see the real Peter Murphy... He´s someone like me, a werewolf for sure! Werewolves singers sing like P-Murphy... Bowie is another werewolf while Bryan Ferry is the fucking vampire master... Sisters of mercy are the vampires that werewolves like the most, in my opinion,
Lol on live shows he always say "Heels" insted of "hills" like on the live show of "All night Long" song he says "Oveerrr aaaa a heeeel" insted of "over a hill"
This footage is from the Resurrection Tour which took place during 1998 and is part of the Bauhaus "Gotham" DVD. Brilliant performance..thanks for the upload.
the term "goth" picked up steam in the late 80's where I was from...You're right, I remember an early interview with Robert Smith and he was asked what kind of music he makes, his response was simply "rock and roll"
I saw Bauhaus for the first time justafter the release of Dark Entries. They played Hollow Hills then. Danny used a normal drumstick. How do I know? I've got it!!
Do you mean Danny as in Daniel Ash (used a drumstick on his guitar?) or are you referring to the actual drummer (whos name is Kevin) seeing as you mentioned the drumstick?
I remember Murphy doing an interview in the days after Bauhaus where he spoke about he and his male musical collaborator also being lovers [this was before Dali's Car, it wasn't Mick Karn] Maybe he gave it a go and then changed his mind. Like Bowie. Again.
I remember a friend gave me a casette tape of them with Bela Lugosi on A and Boys on B side in 97' and I immediatley had to find all I could on them....I even bought a couch a few years back made by a company called Bauhaus....
's funny how good they made them look in the intro shot. I saw them at the Riviera in 98 during their reunion tour. I actually slammed inadvertently into Peter as they were climbing out of a van and heading into the show. My point is, they looked like CRAP! Lotta touch up in that there intro shot.
The founding Fathers of ture "death Rock" the beginging of Goth Music and Goth as a fashion alternative to FASHION.... Peter Murphy has one of the most hauting voices ever!! Pax Vobiscum 2 all.
One of if not ones that practically invented the genre of dark gothic rock, and the main spark that set off the birth of the Gothic sub-culture & life style in early 80's.
I saw them twice in Holland. In the Hague at Het Paard van Troje. The first time they were amazing, best life-act I'd seen for a while back then (80ties)The second time I saw them, a year later, they were destroyed by heroïn. Such a shame and a waste of talent...
Definately one of the founding forefathers. But I don't think they planned it that way. The gothic vibe & spirit just seeps out of certain creative people. Thankfully Peter Murphy and the rest of Bauhaus were some of them.
My #1 song.
