My dad was an air controller in greece at that time, and he used to say that equipment was indeed sub standard then (it's not the case anymore today though)
Looks like this report was filed in the 1980's. I can only imagine that the conditions at these craptacular airports has increased if only "slightly"? A lot of change can happen in 30 years.
Why don't Governments simply ban airlines that are based in their country from flying into airports that are deemed dangerous? Or impose a huge stelth tax or some other deterrent which would make it unprofitable for the airline to fly into such airports? The lost revenue would either put these airports out of business or force them to improve ~ either way the travelling public win.
By "just landed," don't they actually mean "landed several hours prior and had just taxied out onto the runway?" IDIOTS! How do you fuck up a detail that badly, even 20 years ago?!
I mean, I know there was no real Internet back then, not like we have now, at least, but COME ON! Don't these Brits ever fact-check??
The Pan Am hadn't just landed. It and the KLM were on hold due to being diverted to Tenerife because it's original destination was shut down due to a terrorist threat.

@macgeek2004: Facts tend to get in the way of a good story.

The part of the Moroccan airspace is almost unbelievable, even if it"s 20 or more years ago. They are flying practically blind.
