Of all their songs, this is the Beach Boys number that brings tears to my eyes. It is composed and sung in minor mode (the black keys on the keyboard) to convey the sadness. It is most likely the most mature, most searching, most emotional song of all from the Beach Boys. Great job.
Just to make you all aware, Brian wrote the MUSIC to this song. The lyrics are written by Mike Love. Remember kiddies, Brian is not the only lyric writer in the band and he has admitted that some songs that were written by the others are better than some of his own.
@romeokid69 Personally I think Tony Asher was their best lyricist. But the lyrics of this song are brilliant as well. Mike wrote some great lyrics on occasion.
@bunnyfish714 i heard this too. i'm giving away my age was in 5th grade. this also brings back another memory. some special friends and their two children were out at the deset ATVn'(not drunk) threir daughter hit a burn and fliopped off. went into a coma. i was playing this on way to work a few days later and son as i heard i knoew Terry was gone. foud out later i was right. MISS YOU TERRY
Just stunning harmonies. I caught this song during the Party at the Palace 2002 and it has kept my attention ever since. A keeper and can't believe it didn't make the Beach Boys Greatest Hits Album.
I over-looked this song ! I can't imagine how because it's one of their best. So Brian, if you're reading this, it is what everyone says here. Masterful lyrics and harmonies and so early on with the Beach Boys
The harmonies in this song have a terrific, timeless and slightly sad tone to them. What a great testament to Brian's song writing and producing abilities.
This Lovely Song is a real test for a musician trying to learn it by ear (Yeah, I know, the Internet has lots of charts, but those are for sissies; no left brain excercise in that) and then he throws in that little half-step up modulation to further confuse and delight.
I think Mr. Wilson has more than 2 brain lobes working at once; "Genius Is Pain".
I'll tell you what. Cast aside his opposition towards Brian's overt creativity, as well as providing some shallow lyrics for the band's "beach-cars-girls-California" number, Mike Love proves that he can write beautifully-introspective words in a good number of songs. I respect him for that.

One of the most profound songs ever written and the music is so unconventional, yet it fits perfectly.

Best of luck to you. The best of that feeling is still the response from you to something right. With luck maybe you'll find someone right again.

That chord change in the verse (if you can call that a "verse") is so strange, but it puts an already beautiful song over the top.

@HeartInThe60s Not quite. They wrote it during the night of Nov. 22, and JFK was murdered later that day. Ironic.
