That's perfect for a guitar player like me trying to understand basics. Now I know what to ask my drummer for. He's a rock guy and I'm trying to get him to do something like this. Thanks, very helpful.
These kind of drummers forget that it's not about sounding like a drum machine... why doesn't he put some feel into the performance. I could make the same sound as him with Garage Band's Rock drum kit on a mac.
@Patrickcb22 Hey dude, this is an INSTRUCTIONAL video. It's meant to teach drummers a particular style. Keeping the beat steady and repetitive is necessary for the student drummer to look, listen and learn.
If this was a guitar video showing students how to switch from a C chord to a G chord, would you criticize the teacher for not "putting feeling" into the performance? No. Video lessons are just to learn from. I'm sure this drummer could cut loose and be VERY expressive if he wanted to.
@utube9000 Keeping the beat steady and repetitive is great but i think any instructional video should show a more laid back and true feel as well. I just think that these kind of videos are the reason there's so many stiff drummers around, i'm sure the drummer in this video CAN play with feeling but i'm just bringing up the fact that he's chosen not too in this video. I mentioned it in hope that others will agree and then the drummer or company might take it into consideration in future lessons.
@Patrickcb22 That's cool, I know what you're saying. Then again, we only saw part of the lesson. Maybe he opens up more later in the lesson, who knows. Good beat though.
@Patrickcb22 I disagree. Hes playing with feel and just playing to the song. If he did any more it would be overkill. He doesn't have to look like hes taking a shit or having an orgasm to play with feel. He seems focused and making sure its in time and right on the money. What more do you want for a song like that lol
@Patrickcb22 It's something we musicians call "in the pocket". You ought to try it sometime. You might just get hired for a gig. Unless, your the drum owner who likes to crash cymbals and plays fills every time the singer finishes a phrase.
And you cant hear the kick drum nor the high hat? This is actually just "one" country pattern..its a slow "train beat"...there are numerous other "country" beats that are totally kickin that utilize the entire drum kit, if you are competent enough to play them. And as someone already mentioned...keep this pattern up for 5 minutes and see how close to meter you end up.
I actually learned a lot from this. I was trying to play the 8th's on the hi hat. I', sure that's done sometimes, but this was an eye-opener (to a guy who doesn't know country, but might want to cop a cliche country beat now and then)
I just want to get out and get a new drumkit now! Very nice.

Is playing the bass pedal or just keeping a beat with his foot on the floor?
stevweb16 1 year ago 2
@stevweb16 He's playing bass drum on 1 and 3 and he do the accents on snare on 2 and 4:D
damdas1232 1 year ago
He can keep a steady beat and he knows more than two rhythms, that is better than 75% of the drummers in the world!

@nsampsonite especially on an electric drumkit, small snare, and the damn thing sometimes confuses the snare hits
