The difference between a republic and any other government is that a republic is a government of law, not on the people, but the servants that are employed by the people, that is what our government was meant. All through history, what humans have had is a government run by rule of man, that is by the humans with the greatest power to rule over everybody else. A republic doesn't promise freedom, this country started as a republic and look what happened, even if the small tyranny of a republic were restored it would eventually turn into a grand tyranny such as we have today.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but as long as you have a monopoly organization upholding laws, you will always get the poorest service at the greatest cost. This small tyranny will always attract power seeking Hamiltonian-esk authoritarians and will eventually ratchet into a larger tyranny (ie. power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutly, paraphrased from Lord Acton.)
The answer is to reject a monopoly on the enforcement of laws and allow individuals/firms to compete in this service.
