Austin had already brought the WWE back from the brink of failure when the Rock was still a heel with the Nation of Domination and fueding with Degeneration-X. The Rock was popular in his later years, but he really rode the early success of Austin and Degeneration-X. Sure, he helped the WWE grow in popularity like Austin did and he hit his peak around the time Austin's popularity was waning, but to say The Rock saved the WWE is just ignorant.

There was a point were WCW had more viewers n better ratings than the WWF but that all changed when Austin came along who changed wrestling forever. He was the 1st to put an ass beating on Vince, He'll flip u off n drink beer. Anyone could relate to Austin. Austin left wrestling cause he had to cause of his surgeries. The Rock left cause he wanted to make movies

Stone Cold saved the company n broke every WWF record. 9 out of 10 wrestlers wouldn't come back from the surgeries he had to go through but he did. He truly lives up to the name toughest S.O.B. in the history of the WWF. Not only did he come back from career ending injuries but he went on to have some of the most legendary matches n memorable moments in WWF history as well

Austin was big with wrestling fans, The Rock was big in pop culture, and theres nothing bigger than that...

In and out cause of neck injury, The Rock on the other hand was face of the company, he was doing everything from wrestling, to all the talk shows and SNL, appearing in TV shows, appearing in hit music videos, selling world wide no.1 books - The Rock took WWF to new heights

Hogan is THE reason WWE even exist at all and Austin is the man who changed the face of wrestling. Impact, not popularity, is key. The Rock is popular but what major impact did he make? SNL? Hogan, Austin and Flair are the big three. Nobody can touch what those three men have done for this sport. Hogan = impact, Warrior = popular. Same goes for Austin and Rock.

As big as the 80's were for wrestling they won't compare to the ratings sent between mid 97 and 02 - that was proabbly the greatest impact, globally, wrestling had at that point... And it was Rock who drew in those mega ratings, especially between 99 and 01 - Every stadium where Rock main evented it was sold out, for a run of over 2 years, and the ppv's buy rates were amazing, he had a massive cultural impact.

I will say that in Austin's absence The Rock and HHH became major stars. Cena is selling out PPV and making the company a lot of money today, same as Rock did, but what have they changed? Rock rode the The Attitude Era pony same as everyone else, but who started it, who defined it? Rock left wrestling too early to make a huge impact to create a new era.
