I have always been a fan of the Soviet Sam systems and their equipment. Pretty good stuff overall but all systems, even ours have weaknesses. Years ago in wargames there were SA-10s,12s,15s,17s, etc..great systems like ours, but all had their weaknesses. Iran wouldn't worry me with any new Soviet or US Systems. I'm not going to say why.

these SAMs from Russia are not so effective in a real life situation I think, especially with the jamming which was seen in both Iraq wars, they didn't shoot down hardly any aircraft because of the heavy ECM environment.

US got advantage by having German scientists working on it and not having devastating war waged on its soil. As for the stealth, S-300 has been in service since 1979 - system capable of engaging targets with low radar signature before even any stealth planes have been produced at all.

slight correction .. the S-300V uses 9M82 and 9M83 family made by Novator Design Bureau as its missile :D
the 5V55 family which was made by Fakel Design Bureau belongs to S-300P SAM system

I have always been a fan of the Soviet Sam systems and their equipment. Pretty good stuff overall but all systems, even ours have weaknesses. Years ago in wargames there were SA-10s,12s,15s,17s, etc..great systems like ours, but all had their weaknesses. Iran wouldn't worry me with any new Soviet or US Systems. I'm not going to say why.

Geo-politics 101 - the way I seez it. Grades of equipment offered for sale by USSR & now Russia to other countries poor. Equipment used by USSR and Russia was of higher quality but not as good as US. USSR had strength in depth, US didn't nor does it now hence first strike tactics like Shock and Awe. Currently, Russia is supplying Iran, Syria with cutting edge SAMS etc.

USA is not going to attack Iran, it would be a disaster, their resources are allready depleted, and they have a hard time getting more, and Iran is WAY larger than Iraq, and way moe united and wil actually resist much more.
USA simply has no strength to take on Iran now, they could bomb it, but full-scale invasion, no, that would be a suicide.

I believe you are correct. We would blockade by sea and bomb them into the Middle Ages which suits their theocracy. Within 48 hrs there would be no cogent air defence. No ground troops will be committed to Iran.
No war is neccessary or wanted. If they give up nuke aspirations and allow UN inspections, its peace. The choice is theirs.

YES, USA fights mostly by AIR power, that is why it will never attack a country with decent SAMs, because they will have to stay down, and US land forces would have to take most of the job on themselves, which they can not do, since US land forces are not that strong.

PetrFM, there is one thing you have to know. During Cold War USA and USSR were going different ways in computer researches. USA concentrated all efforts to create better hardware. USSR concentrated its efforts to create better software. Soviet computers were slower, but programms and algorythms were well optimized.

these SAMs from Russia are not so effective in a real life situation I think, especially with the jamming which was seen in both Iraq wars, they didn't shoot down hardly any aircraft because of the heavy ECM environment.

In both wars over Iraq, the Iraqis were using SA-2 missiles and anti-aircraft artillery which was totally outdated. The Iraqis had nothing like SA-12 or the SA-15 which would have been far more effective.

Serbia shot down a lot of aircraft despite ECM and NATO air superiority with Russian SAM systems KUB M1 from 1961 and S-125 from the 70's.Those weapons have now been upgraded to resist conditions of heavy electromagnetic interference

In some cases that was true. Especially in avionics and sensors. But we are living in 2007 now. In many fields Russia is leading with military equipment.
To name a few: S-300 and S-400 SAM systems, Yakhont, Sizzler and Brahmos Anti-ship missiles, Shkval torpedo's, 9K58 Smerch MLRS. Their military equipment is in smaller numbers compared to the coldwar.

the US and Russia have always historically kept their most advanced weapons classified until they were either needed or simply safe to expose. but when crunch time comes, lets face it the US has always whipped out the bigger or more advanced piece of hardware. for example, we invented nuclear weapons first and later on we invent stealth fighters/bombers. Russia is just now coming out with stuff to counter stealth

Actually the work on nuclear weapons was conducted since early 1940's in most major countries and the nuclear fission was independently discovered in 1938-1939 in France, Germany and USSR but not in US. US got advantage by having German scientists working on it and not having devastating war waged on its soil. As for the stealth, S-300 has been in service since 1979 - system capable of engaging targets with low radar signature before even any stealth planes have been produced at all.
