It's funny to read that it's also a ritual for other people... I've heard both tracks so many times, I know them by heart. It's a quiet 40' trance. Is there a video with a live performance? I saw one short fragment on tv once. I think it was black and white.
All of Miles is essential listening not just this and kind of blue. The dude never did anything wrong. In his forty-six year career he killed it on every track.
If this album is a daily ritual for you then you need to add to your Jazz collection. Think of Miles as an easy listening introduction into free thinking music with endless possibilities. I don't want to say any more for fear of sounding like a complete prick.
After all this time I just realised that at 4.12 it reminds me of King Crimson's Formentera Lady from their Islands album. Many happy memories of driving around Cyprus in a hire car listening to this album on tape in the mid 80's.
One of his greatest achievements and a game changer in modern music. It ranks up there with anything in the last fifty plus years no matter what category. All of the players and their solos are spot on, but for me it's John McLaughlin's haunting guitar chords/solo from the very outset set the tone for this unforgettable piece. There's Zawinul's organ and Tony William's continual pulsating high hat that are utterly sublime. Forty years later and it still entrances you in it's magic!
miles where are you?
