@neomysterio No he's Cobalt (Jetto in English). The 80's series was slightly changed from the 60's series and the manga. I think Atlas might have been a character, but he wasn't his brother. Jetto was never in the two color remakes.
Call me optimistic but it was number one in China and from what I hear is getting well received in Canada and Australia so anything's possible. But yes, if this doesn't get a sequel while Dragonball: Evolution does I will totally loose all faith in Hollywood
I heard that the studio that made Astro boy is currently in development of a movie called "Gagaman"{or something like that}. So if the DVD sales of astro go through the roof we might be able to see it happen, I am still wondering if they are going to do a sequel of TMNT{2007}. I'm surprised that it hasnt happened yet.
Yeah, I'm hoping the same thing. I'm surprised about TMNT not getting a sequel too. Last I heard, they're going to do another live action movie which makes no sense to me. I thought the Ninja Turtles worked much better in CGI
From what I heard the live-action movie of TMNT would be different from the CG film. But we might be able to see another full blown CG Tmnt in the future, although Nick has bought the rights to TMNT.{Which I am kinda worried about since the anime of TMNT wasnt that good in my point of view}
@Dragonrider1227 I know I would like at least a few aspects of it, but the overall knowledge that it's basically fake would ultimately destroy the experience for me. On top of the fact that they completely change the storyline and replace a lot of emotional stuff with mindless action, and add some emo whore love interest for the "badass AmeriKAN Astro Boy!"
@UTAU53Yui none of that bothered me. I found plenty of emotion and heart in the movie. Yeah, they "Americanized" him a little, but he still comes off a lot more likable than he did in the 2004 anime dub. Not a single "Let's Rocket!" was uttered in the entire film. (Thank God) My only REAL issue with it was Nicolas Cage's Dr. Tenma sounded a little... flat and sometimes over the top
@Dragonrider1227 Honestly, I don't doubt that for a bit. You really can't get any more obnoxious than Candi Milo's Astro. I'm still just mad that our industry got the rights to yet ANOTHER Japanese franchise...
@UTAU53Yui No, I REALLY didn't like Candi Milo's Astro. Though I don't blame her. She just did what they paid her to do. I blame the suits that thought Astro needed to be more "hip."
@Dragonrider1227 Such a shame too, because her mere involvement caused me to slightly hate her. As with all the other well-known voice actors who were used (except the girl who played Tamao/Alejo).
@UTAU53Yui As an American myself I find that so sad yet so true. What got me was that shortly after they screwed up Astro's character and the show got canned, Avatar: The Last Airbender comes out and it featured a little boy who acted like a kind, and playful boy. Kinda like how Astro was originally in the anime and it was a big hit. So much for thinking American boys had to be "hip" huh? >>
@Dragonrider1227 Wow, I never even made that connection, but it's true! I find it funny that basically ALL anime is dubbed to appeal to young children, meanwhile American cartoons like Teen Titans with mind-rape plots (the episodes with Slade still scare me today, and I'm not 7 anymore. I still refuse to watch them) and crazy sexual tension aren't altered at all. Funny how the industry works, huh?
@UTAU53Yui I know. It's so weird. Obviously, the people behind stuff like Teen Titans and Avatar probably feel the same way we do and are not the same people dubbing Astro Boy
Oh yeah, I should have remembered that. Hah, the only way America ever got rights to Astro Boy again after the NOW!Comics disaster is because Tezuka's dead.
@Dragonrider1227 Yeah, they did, but I remember watching it before knowing the company had changed, and I remember that I hated the new actors. Sanji's hit me especially hard. I honestly would have rather they either got all the original actors of didn't redub it at all.
@UTAU53Yui I haven't heard any of the voice actors so I can't say but considering Funimation also includes the Japanese versions in their sets I wouldn't worry about who they got for the english versions
@UTAU53Yui Obivoiusly you know a lot more about Astro Boy then I do. I am simply a fan of the original b/w cartoon. (As shown here in the US) I thought it was great. I don't think the mistakes made on later version were so much "American" as they were the prevailing "wisdom" of the day. It is hard to remake a classic. I think the 1980s version looks pretty good. Though I'm not too fond of the disco-like soundtrack.
@UTAU53Yui Do you mean the music was differentt in the Japanese version or something? I thought of the disco music and slower pace of the 80s Astro Boy color program was something the producers had decided upon at the time. You know, like how Star Trek Next Generation was based more on feelingss and character, which was the 80s idea of enlightenment and sensitivity. I believe such thinking slowed the pace a bit and the less unique music cues made the action scens a triffle off kilter.
@stramayne Yup, just as I thought. You don't understand the average anime dubbing process. In this series' case, much of the original footage, dialogue, and plot is changed/removed to the point where the product being released to American audiences differs greatly from that of the original, released in Japan. I'm not talking about the changes that the people who created the show itself decided to make, just the changes that other companies made to the finished product...
@UTAU53Yui Please forgive my ignorance. I guess it's something like the Power Rangers where they use some one the original Japanese footage then kind of create their own version of the show around it. O well. All I know is I liked the Astro Boy I watched as a kid. I didn't know who made it or where it came from. I only know I like it still
@stramayne It's alright, we all start out knowing nothing. And yeah, it's basically something like that, except less expensive (but also more expensive than if they'd just dubbed the show and broadcast it as-is). I still don't understand all the localization issues. Much of it is culture, but much is also... old people who aren't the target audience, and thus don't understand the target audience. At least that's the way I see it.
@Dragonrider1227 Agreed! The boy was cute, strong, clever, fancy and shirtless! and nobody had a dirty thought on him! It was a young sex-symbol superhero!
Alot of it kinda was low budget and even now most animes continue to use budget cutting techniques such as flat close ups of characters faces where only his\her eyes and nose are visible aswell as splish splash here and there. Animes about the detail though, not FPS. See if you can find a 1930s\40s anime video on youtube (I've found a few) and you'll see what anime\Japanimation was TRULY like in its early days.
In Latin America, Astro Girl was callled "Astrita", something like "little astro girl". Although the animation may look a bit old-fashioned, the original story was much better.
Astro Girl (called that only in America) was originally called Uran (as in uranium). Jetto, the tall goofy one patterened after Arthur Lake was called Cobalt everywhere else.
I remember that there was an "older" brother of Astro's in the original series who in fact was not as advanced as Astro. Jenny in "My Life as a Teenager Robot" faced a similiar problem. However, I do not recall how much he became intergrated with Asto's family which included his sister who I recall as Astro Girl. Of course the more recent versions have given her much better names.
The reason the current U.S. version sounds "sorta hard to hear" is because there was a great deal of reconstruction involved. The original NBC FILMS negatives don't exist- and 16mm film prints had to be used with original Japanese elements to "recreate" the American episodes.
This piece will be good for my film coursework on the bit about limited animation. Anime's come a long way since, huh?
