this has seriously stuck with me since I was like 6 and saw this. I forgot everything else about Punky Brewster, but "friend in the refrigerator" never left my memory. Say what you want about cheesy "very special" episodes of 80s shows, they certainly were memorable.
On the dvd, there's an alternate ending to this episode where he takes the fridge to the landfill and they put it in the grinding machine. It was pretty ahead of its time, this show.
It has nothing to do with air pressure. Refrigerators made before about 1958 (and iceboxes before that) have a mechanically latching handle that can only be opened from the outside to keep the gasket sealed air-tight. Over a period of several decades, hundreds of children in the US died in them from lack of air. Such refrigerators were banned, but old ones still can be found, and in 1975, an 11 year-old boy died in one. By law, the doors must not be removed when they are junked.
@dickcheney6 Mmm? No, this was a problem with older fridges. Talk to older generations and you'll find someone who knows someone or knows of some child who died getting caught in one. The problem is that the doors were very, very heavy: too heavy for small arms. When Punky Brewster came out, this was still a problem with older models, if not as bad as it had been a decade or two before. This is one of the reasons why some refrigerators (then and now) have locks on them.
@Celyia Well, I suppose that makes sense. That added to the fact that if the door is closed somewhat tight, compressing the seal more, it will squeeze some air out, creating a vacuum that makes it harder to open. My freezer does that, and it also has a key lock (which the original owners lost the key for, so we'll have to remove the door when it comes time to throw it out)
It is recommended that refrigerator doors be removed or locked shut when it is being taken out of service or disposed of.
@Celyia So true! Back in the 80s, "old" stuff was REALLY old. I remember I saw this episode on a big, wood-paneled RCA with dials that we had to get up and turn if we wanted to change the channel. Our fridge was a 70s lime green deal.. and Henry's fridge was way older from the looks of things.
The whole damn time they were doing CPR on her I was thinking, can't they at least put her in the house and not have her lying there in the snow? Lol seriously, that probably would have helped.
My sister and I used to watch this together all the time when we were kids. Fantastic show, great values. Both my sister and I now do foster care, and work in health care.
This episode scared the hell out of me. Everytime it was on, I would hide behind the couch and close my ears during the CPR scene, it just really upset me
A side note, that the guy who comes in to look at refrigerators while Henry is looking at refrigerators plays Jimmy John in the 3rd Season ep. called Punky's Porker. Real name is Jim Hampton.
OMG I have been searching for this forever!!! I remember this so vividly from when I was a kid, and had NO idea where it was from. I am SOOOO happy I found this, because a 7 year old girl like me circa 1996 can really learn something =)
This episode seriously my favorite! Nobody ever remembers it when I say something about it.... But it seems to be the most important one, I mean, you learn CPR and one very important lesson: DON'T HIDE IN REFRIDGERATORS.
Allen's misbehaving in class almost cost Cherie her life.
If Punky and Cherie, and Henry were not there, what would Allen have done?? He would not have been able to save her because he didn't pay attention in class.
He could of saved Cherie had he payed attention and not been sent to the principles.
Allen's a great character as the whole gang is, but in such a rather serious ep., he should not have been in this ep. if he was going to behave how he did, or his character should have been written to act more maturly.
There are times to be a smart ass and be funny, and times not to be.
uh.. i think they had him misbehave to prove a point. If people dont pay attention when they are being taught something serious as cpr, there can be serious consequences .. theres a lesson in the way he acted..
@kafekahnela True. My problem is that it always had to be him, with this and with mentally handicapped Linda. He always behaved in Mike's class and respected him (from what I've seen) so this scene surprises me.
@Reew13 That is true, but what was Allen supposed to do in the meantime. You're assuming that all 911 operators have basic first aid cards by their phones so they can talk the caller through the necessary treatment or actions. In the 1980's, the 911 system was still in its infancy.
if you're distraught after watching this episode, i dont think you should watch the anniversary that boyboy posted - now that is a heart destroying drama
OMG! Just saw both episodes! What a sick joke! I am balling my eyes out!!! FOR REALS!!! haha! *embarrassed*! Oh well! How can anyone NOT believe in God after watching something like this. And what true friendship displayed by Punky and Cherie.. *points above* THAT'S GOD!! I get VERY spiritual when talking about death and friendship! Remember people.. it matters how u treat people on Earth while they are here! Sometimes it IS too late...When Punky said "Give my best to God!" I lOST IT!!
There was a public service announcement that aired afterward I think. Gosh, I can still remember and that was almost twenty years ago. Crazy, this was a pretty good show. I also remember afterward everybody warning us not to do CPR unless we're totally sure how to do it.

happy7117 2 years ago 3
Absolutely right!! :) His actions in "The Gift" were a lot worse than this.
cammy85 2 years ago
I know that ep. all to well!! Allen is downright viscous and cruel for making fun of Linda like that.
Mike and Punky's reaction are of pure hate and disgusted. Rightfully so.
Why didn't Mike send Allen to the principles for making fun of Linda??
Making fun of Linda was worse than his antics during Cherie Lifesaver..both are pretty out of line.
Allen can be pretty funny mostly, but some eps, like The Gift and Cherie Lifesaver, he is better left not being in the ep.
happy7117 2 years ago

My comment was supposed to say, "If Punky and Margo and Henry were not there, what would Allen have done I wonder??"

1. Sending messages calling someone a whore is kinda sexist in and of its self.

3. If you watch the video you will in fact see guys standing around practically drooling with idiocy while the girls save the day.
