@inconceivabledark, yes, it's me, in the group 'shot', I'm down front with the moustache....Back in the day...it was a fun day...David was getting pretty frustrated with all the delays associated with production. I committed the 'unforgivable', I actually spoke to David, sensing his frustration, I said something like, what is this vid. about? corporate angst?...He said, "No, THIS is about corporate angst."...Meaning, the video shoot..take care Dan
Hey, I finally found this video. All these years passed, and I'd never seen it. That's me down front with the moustache, during my moustache wearing period, like when I was a caveman on "Flintstones"...good old days...ah-yes..
I finally watched the short film La Jetee, and it's no joke that the video borrowed brilliantly from the film, making Bowie not only take upon himself the illness of his deceased brother, but also becoming the main character of said film.
This is my favourite song by Mr Bowie, there isn't a song by him I don't like but if I had to list them then this would be number 1. Wonderful video too.
I always thought David Bowie should have been in the Harry Potter movies, preferably as a teacher of Illusions and Apparitions (Did you see how much he changed his appearance during the Ziggy Stardust years?).
Anyhow, great song. I was surprised it wasn't included on the "Best of".
@bigmike172 I agree. And it doesn't even matter that he's in his sixties now, he could still get away with playing Bond. The man's barely aged, and he's aged beautifully.
David had a brother who suffered from schizophrenia (a severe mental illness)... One day he could not take it any longer and saw himself forced to commit suicide... Very common in schizophrenic people....
I don't get it. All my friends and family think he's funny looking and can't sing, but I would totally do David Bowie. That man makes me question my sexuality. Damn.
First thought...other than loving the song, is I love that suit. Very sharp. It's clean and classy and I wants one like it. Second thought...when he's busted up, it reminds me of his "Look Back in Anger" video. Big fan of his music.
I find, Where he wipes his mouth at 2:31 is a simular contrast, To "Boys Keep Swinging" in which he wipes the lipstick from his mouth in a reminisent gesture !
@supersonicbird11 I thought the same thing! This is a great video, in my opinion. I remember driving late one night in May of 1993 and discovering this song while scanning thru some FM stations, never heard it again, but loved it right away. Bowie rocks, obviously, and this song tells an amazing story.
@casheasy Bowie never has let his fans down, Every Tour and Album has incredible Brilliance, and are Light Years, ahead of the Pack, Long Live David !
I've watched this brilliant video hundreds of times, and I think I understand it quite well, but for example, could someone please tell me why there are two shady figures in the background while Bowie sings at 1:30 and at 1:50? They seem to be either members of the imaginary conspiracy or two of the people that see Bowie after he jumps, but either way I thought that the Bowie that sings into the microphone was the "normal" Bowie, not the insane man inside (or on top of) the building. Thanks...
This song is based on David's brother's suicide... (sad I know)...
David had a brother who suffered from schizophrenia (a severe mental illness)... One day he could not take it any longer and saw himself forced to commit suicide... Very common in schizophrenic people....
I wish David would stay that age, but he's 65 now and I fear he's decaying...I wish I could stay that age too....I need to get a Picture of Dorian Gray portrait of myself or I just need to...JUMP...got to believe someboday.
This song is soooo brilliant and great but it's so sad to think it's all about his half brother Terry's suicided and how depressed David felt. Love the song I just wish there was some other way he could have written it
I was 8 when this song came out. Don't know why, but I loved it at the time and I didnt really like any other David Bowie songs.
I haven't heard it in about 15 years and now I just randomly found it on youtube. Absolute brilliant song and way ahead of its time. I played it to my mates and they thought it was from the early 2000's
even if u dont know the story to this song its funky.. a bit too funky for a r.i.p song but thats what makes it freaky and unique, u cant guess bowies mind he is a genius within the music industry instead of an office research job... gotta respect the ingenuity a bit..
Fantastic song and video. Love the frames where he is singing dramatically into the microphone, and where he suddenly opens his eyes, obviously displaying the disparity due to the dilated pupil. Great visual images and a classic, underrated song.
He could have been a great movie actor, but he prefered going on with music, which was not a bad idea, despite of all his downs between 1986 and 1995, till '1.outside' album, that is, to my opinion, one of his masterpieces...
The song and the video are splendid. Possibly one of his most underated song. I cant help myself thinking the song is sad to cry, His brother was schizophrenic, heard voices and threw himself off a psychiatric hospital window.
It's a real shame his label, at the time, went under. This album went from #1 to out of print for a decade and this single, given time, would have climbed the charts in my opinion. The 10 years between this and Reality could have been very different with a bit of luck.
This track sounds and the video looks more avantgarde than anything released afterwards and especially stuff from these days.
I remember seeing this back in 92 on MTV... It was like a UFO has landed... One of the seldom moments when pop music causes a crack in the space time continuum...
At 1:59 I think hes been kidnapped and is being mind controlled programed to jump the building to make it look like suicide someone/s in power 0:55 wants him dead.
I subscribe to the opinion mentioned by others here, the song was ahead of it's time. If it had a re-release, it might have major success. Who knows, it's a great piece of music anyways.
i remember that it was a very avant garde and modern video for 1993.... a little bit like Bjork 6 years later with her "still actual" video 'All is full of Love' ....
both videos were already 21th century videos... and Bowie if it's not his best album... this song is really good... i hesitate to put it in my favourite...
You know I was really disappointed by this album when it was released, but gradually it grew immensly on me and now it is among my top 3 favourite Bowie albums.
I think David was more affected by Terry's suicide than he lets on. I see that make up of db with the black eye and it makes me wierd. DB is... very important.
Yup. A Lad Insane. Apparently his brother introduced him to some good books and music- everyone has one of them. Brother or no. Bewlay Bros. Is that a terry/david splice you reckon? I feel a bit rude discussing this stuff, Damn Fame.
Terry was his half brother. he showed David all his fav music and got him into it. he joined the RAF and David went into music.
