The japanese language has no L (for some unknown reason) so instead they put R then pronounce it as L. Which is naturally very confusing for people speaking english, so the subbers normally put L as that is what they hear (Such as Lavi/Ravi in D Grey Man or Levi/Revi in Black Lagoon).

They do the same with B and V.

Na well actually they come out with a sound which is a mix between the two. But when you are learning the language they advise you to say L :)
