Karajan was a famed conductor but he's not a good interpreter on some pieces. This is one of them. It's too mechanical. The Berlin Phil. was not exactly top notch in terms of sound and texture of the strings. Finally, DDG recording engineers failed in their job, like they did on many recordings from 1970s to early 1990s (when I stopped buying DDG's "yellow label" CDs altogether). The German engineers should have learned from the Japanese in making spacious sound with precision stereo imaging.
It's Karajan .... what a man can say more .... his way of synchronizing is absolutely amazing...above that , you feel the sweat and blood as a training result.... Beautiful performance
@71196jmg no no guy braunstein is the concermaster of berliner nowdays ! i aksed who is the concertmaster in this particular video ..and its Michel Schwalbe :-)
And, not updating but uploading. Really folks it's great that you're trying to sound cosmopolitan but why not open your dictionaries for a change?
1:42 - 1:48 transported me to another mental dimention... excelent, I think those notes meant something to Karajan, it is absorbed in the work, amazing
Karajan has them actually do it as a march, sticking strictly to tempo, not half-pausing for flourishes to be savored, as I've usually heard it done. Somehow, that persistence makes it sound even better. That old Teuton knew his stuff.
@Starhavenite - too simplistic don't you think. The ultimate criteria is not tempo, but the overall rendition. I don't like this rendition and I know that many others don't. Not all marches sound good in strict tempo, nor are they supposed to be.
@ToulBoi Why do so many people get the trombone mixed up with the horn? The HORN is by far the most epic instrument. But the trombone parts in this piece are pretty epic.
Dear IlMondo, thanks for posting this excellent piece of music! Agree with willgeek, this performance is a bit faster than usual, but full of spirit and power! As G.B. Shaw allegedly put it after having listened to this piece in London: this music is so exciting and soul-stirring, had it lasted just one more minute I would run out of the music hall and could take the Trafalgar square by assault with my bare hands!
Normally I worship von Karajan, but here...gawd, it's so rushed and frantic, sounds like they can't wait to get it over with! But thanks for posting, always a real joy to see the Master at work, even when he's not always at his peak.

@pablononescobar - one dislike is too many? LOL. How about millions? This is a very mediocre rendition by most measures.
