I own a '97 MX-5 and recently bought an '07 Solstice and I gotta say, I was pretty blown away at how well it competes with the Miata as a sports roadster. Handles and drives beautifully and damn! How curvacious the body is.
I can't stand all the haters who hate how well rated the Solstice is. I personally plan on saving money up for an 07 GXP, simply because it's everything I want in a car. Sexy, sporty, and affordable. I have yet to find any other car that remotely fits my specifications (I don't mind either the GXP or the Redline, but finding a Redline model as cheap as the GXP is impossible in So Cal, so GXP it is.) Any tips for me when I finally get it?
Holy Cow!!! I viewed your early video on the 04 Mazdaspeed MX-5 and almost felt bad for buying one. NOT!!! It is a fantastic car to drive and own. So it jiggles a little on bumpy roads...its a convertible. You don't mention much about the awesome handling, the quick acceleration, or any of the positives.
Then I saw this video and you actually praised it like there is no tomorrow. Even with an automatic transmission!!!!
@Adrianjohnm - This and the 04 MazdaSpeed Review are some of our earliest work. The big surprise with the Solstice was that it exceeded our expectations... which were VERY LOW. The MazdaSpeed review... Todd liked the car a lot, he was just too big for it. Most people don't notice how much Todd enjoyed it because Paul did not. We recommend you watch our more recent MX-5 review to see how much the guys like the car. The Solstice can't top the Miata, but was better than most people think.
Screw all you import lovers who automatically hate this car. I sold this car to customers who LOVED the Solstice. And yes, I still work there...we still carry Cadillacs and Buicks. You fanboys in your skinny jeans would cream your pants over this EXACT car if the Toyota logo was on the front of it....
I read on CNN's website about a month ago that DELOREAN is talking about bringing back the Solstice! Honestly, and it looks pretty cool, not too many drastic changes from the original. Supposed to be next year or 2012. I have the a dark grey convertible Solstice and LOVE IT! I will never get rid of it. The sweetest ride I've even experienced. Really, really sweet.
these guys are idiots who are biased towards american cars. they give a rating of 5/10 to a legendary car such as the miata and give a very high rating to a piece of shit like this pontiac. i have test driven this car last yr and trust me its a horrible car. worst interior, worst power and handling. nothing better than an eclipse. that retard Todd thinks that a BMW 328 is bad handling car and a solstice handles great. wow these guys need to quit reviewing and look out for jobs elsewhere.
@davidhindu The guys didn't both give the Miata a 5/10. It was before we were including graphical ratings, but if you watch again you'll see - Paul didn't like it, Todd liked it a lot. As we've stated elsewhere, this car is NOT superior to the MX5. In fact the MX5 (NC) is one of Todd's favorites. Th Solstice is flawed, but surprising. And yes, Todd doesn't like the 328, but does like the 335. Meanwhile, he loves the current Z4, the 135i, and the last 2 generations of the M3.
lol, just got this car on Forza 3 so I thought I would check this out. The car looks great in the game but doesn't have the best handling in the world. This vid proved my wrong tho.
I do own a solstice, it`s very nice car.. yes, at summer times i do have a lot of fun with it.the attention it get from people is amazing. i love my summer car.
"difficult to find a car that competes this well in this price bracket"... Seriously? Miata's are really not that difficult to find, and they are 400 lbs lighter and will give you 200k+ miles trouble free...
@coolerdude44 I've driven this car since it first hit the market. Incredible car. Handles like a roller coaster on a rail, turns heads even at a dead stop. Simply Incredible!
i mean, it's good compared to most sedans, and certainly the best handling american-made car (although the chassis is european... but nobody seems to mention this. can't exactly credit detroit for the handling, can we?), but it's not the best sports car. the mazda mx-5 is so much better, as is the nissan 370z, although that's slightly more expensive. hell, even the golf gti would drive better.
its not the best handling american car by a looooooong stretch top handling american car would be a dodge viper srt10 acr, a corvette zr1, and a cts-v
That's why we never had the luxury of making big cu gas guzzlers. Europeans and Japanese always specialised in small engines with big power..becaurse we knew century's ago the oil would not be squirting out of the ground forever, and would get more expensive. That thought is now finally also coming to America. Listen to California gouvernor Arnold Schwarzenegger. He is European, he know's what he's talking about.
Actually, Gov. Arnold is from Austria, not Australia. That's in Central Europe... in fact, almost in the dead center of Europe.
And a big factor in the history of US big-car design is the difference in roads between America and Europe.
Look at the cars GM and Ford Europe build for the European market: smaller engines and agile. In the US, with our huge wide open spaces and generally straight roads we got obsessed with big straight-line power and cheap oil. Same thing in Australia.
yep, because he does certainly not have 5 hummers, does he? hes a real european, likes his cars small and efficient. should run a review of the svt raptor, got 1 and want to know how it does. looks like ford of america got my big, speed-happy gas guzzlin ass what i wanted, didnt they? guess i should have gone green and bought a H1
Every GM car I ever bought was a total lemon.... I wanted to like cars like my Pontiac T/A, when I bought it new - but the lack of quality made me get rid of them quickly. Warped brake rotors in about 9,000 miles? Engine computer that totally failed and left me stranded? A *fire* under the car when a parts bag left on by mistake at the factory burnt up on the exhaust piping? Yep.... all those problems and more.
So what if you have to stop and get out to put the top down. You have to do the same with a corvette convertible and you are looking at a car you spend $55K and up.
And that was the stupidest mistake of last 50 years. I have a 2001 Grand Prix GT and its still on the road in 2009 and never had a problem car drives great, fast, ecomonical and American workers got paid to built it!!!! wise up USA your George w bush has made you stupid. duh im george bush duuuh
You know what sucks? Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Hyndai for taking our american jobs thats what sucks. Lets ban foreign imports and just buy USA cars for 20 years. Stop Making JAPAN rich people!!!
and look at the cars honda toyota nissan and hyundai make. and then look at the cars american companies have. its kind of easy to see why -_-; for the most part american cars...suck. although its sad to see GM kill pontiac...at the end they actually made a good car.
think about it...spend 80k importing a new GTR or spend over 100k getting a vette zr1...hrm
I completely agree. And I'm also disappointed about them killing Pontiac, they had a very clean, classy line up, the G8 GXP, Solstice GXP, were some of my favorite cars. Ah oh well too bad
Yes. Well..American cars are also exotic for not-Americans, like the Chevrolet SSR. But those are compact, sporty American models, like this European based Solstice. It's not the craftmanship and technology that prevents Americans making better cars, it's attitude. We also had our share of problem cars from France, for example. But also here, the German and Japanese automakers set the pace in quality and perfection. American cars we like, but guzzle a lot.. Here 1 litre gas: 1.20-1.40 euro.
