The reason it does this so that you use the battery up to the point that you completely discharge it, and the computer cannot work without the power cable itn.
You should calibrate the battery. The chip is uncalibrated so it doesn't read well the amount of power left. You have to charge all the way up, then keep charging for 2 hours, then use all the power until the PC goes to standby mode, the leave all night. When it's depleted, just charge again. There you go....
Remember to do this once a month and don't discharge until the the laptop turns off or it may never charge again.
Actually the Battery is not lieing.. The built in control and safety circuit is not allowing it to charge.. The battery still has a charge but not enough to run the computer... you need to deep cycle it by some other means.. as the laptop won't for *Safty*

I have the same laptop (Dell inspiron 2200) and my battery was doing the same. You can recondition it by putting the battery in the freezer for 24 hours. The reason you are doing this is to break down sulfation in the NiMH cells (This will not work on a lithium ion battery, just nickle metal hydride.....The inspiron 2000 series should have the nickle battery like mine). After 24 hours let the battery thaw and charge it up. You should get a few more minuets out of it. I get 1 hour now!
Your battery is 100% dead. The energy from the power cord is running on the circuits yet. The BIOS doesn't use up much energy, so it stays up for 30 seconds. If u do that while u boot up, it will shut down.
wrong. in bios the processor is only processing whats some letters on the screen, and info about sensors. And that's very low. when boooting windows, the processor needs to load data, and it takes alot of power.
Has nothing to do with your battery. It's just energy left. Since your BIOS doesn't need much power, it can easily stay on for 30 seconds. This would even work without batteries. It works the same as my digital clock radio. When I unplug my batteries, it still shows for around 10 seconds. But when I press the light button, it drains so much energy it turns off immediately.
@TheWickex actually before the OS's power management kickstarts it draws maximum power, the analogy with the digital clock it's just stupid; electronics are not the same: the digital clock stays on because it doesn't need much power and when you unplug it there is some charge in the capacitors which sustains it for several seconds, those same capacitors are used for powering up the light and buzzer which draw more power that's why when you turn on the light it just turns off.
@lowery02 this is to prove that the vendor aka"Dell" set up a "timebomb" on the battery to screw you and other ignorants like you. By the way Dell are the biggest assholes on doing this. So stop posting if you don't know what you're talking about.
@meshterooarad i do you dont, funny as hell that you believe that, would you like to come to my house and show me the timebomb? is this like the time bomb in gasoline that renders it useless once burnt?
Watch a little closer. He is jumping the battery back to life by plugging the battery in when only the power pack is plugged in. The button pressing is just taking the computer into bios.
I have found this very useful. I was able to fix a new battery that had not conditioned properly using this method on an Acer Extensa.
From what i know about batteries is you need to properly drain them not just when the pc sais its flat this step repeated will properly flatten the cells and SHOULD! help them charge better next time,
Dell batteries suck as does their customer service. I am still waiting for a call from their support department 2 weeks after I logged a fault. Battery overheating until it's too hot to touch and they don't give a f**k!
Nice, i see you have the dell inspiron 1200 or 2200. I have the 2200 and my battery is starting to go. just a word of advice about your laptop, don't let it get hot or the mother board will crash. i should know, i'm on my third one!!!!
It's not useful. It just sort of illustrates that the battery lies to you about how much power is left. Also, if you do this a bunch of times (I was bored, one day), it actually regained about 30 minutes of battery life because I drained it fully before recharging.
Unfortunately, if you get to the point where this actually helps your battery life, your battery is well on its way out anyway.
@brinkness i'm planning on making a 30 cell battery now which will also work as an airflow stand, but i took apart the battery on the vaio fz31z which was holding about 2 minutes (i bought it not working so the battery must've been drained for some time), and found that all the cells show full life! i.e 4v instead of 3.7v on my cheap multimeter, what do you think might be wrong???
this is true and it worked for me. toshiba m35
