so anyway, this vid is BS. the whole point of corn liquor is that you germinate the corn and then cook it under fire to stop it from growing any more. The malted corn then provides the sugar for the yeast "bacteria" to eat and then make alcohol.
The yeast eats the sugar and poops out alcohol and then you distill it.
The whole purpose of the malted corn is to provide sugar for the yeast.
@Trash732 well i am from eastern kentucky grew up around moonshine all my life.and i can tell you there are different ways to make it and everybody has their own preferences.i dont know where you heard that the sugar should be minimal if you sprout your corn thats bs.you also dont have to add yeast to make mash it just speeds up the process.but yhe true old timers just use sugar sprouted corn and water thats it.
@Trash732 yep thats what i said.adding yeast makes it work in about 3 days not adding yeast takes about seven days to work but makes a better product.now turn you computer off! get out in the real world, and learn something hands on then you will know what you are talking about. have a good day!
yes, baker's yeast would work. brewer's yeast for making beer is used because it is slower acting and produces less "off" flavors. Probably less important when making moonshine. I've only made beer, so I don't know for sure.
lol im not a avid moonshiner, but i know for a fact you have got to cook the mash before you add the yeast,so the corn is broken down for fermentation, all he is really making or anyone for that fact that isnt cookin there mash first is just making sugar booze,in which that case you dont need corn or any grain for that matter.these guys would make a tasty booze if only they did it the right way
Sorry guys I ment Wine and Beer! Moonshine is permit only! I need to read what I post ; )
I'm doing 200 gallons a week of spirits for fuel to blend with 15% ragular fuel with a permit. It's real easy to get and you have to use the fuel for YOUR vehicle only. I'm at $1.26 a gallon right now. The should only be used in flex fuel vehicles only due to the water atraction of alcohol. Thanks Ironhead41 for catching my typo.
@ironhead41 laws come from the people. not "governments". governments are groups of people who get together when needed to protect non rights violating citizens from other rights violating citizens. what right does it violate of someone else to make or sell whiskey? none. all government does is create criminals and violence out of, otherwise, non violent people; by forcing them to protect their own property when they threaten to take it or cage them for owning or selling things.
@ironhead41 where I live in Tennessee it is legal to make and distribute as long as you have a tax sticker on each jar, these are sold at the court house with a pamphlet on staying legal

Actually, I believe you do have to put the corn in, and not just for flavor! From what I have read yeast cannot survive on sugar alone, and must have some yeast nutrient in order to ferment. That is the reason why Turbo yeast packets have nutrient in the, and why you have to put fruit in when making melomel
@ironhead41 yeah but that's the point, you want to change that starch to sugar and get more alcohol! That first run off, - woooo! It'll knock you on your arse.
This isn't really corn mash. Real corn mash doesn't require any sugar to be added. For the real stuff, you use a lot more corn, and no added sugar. You process the corn in such a way to convert the starches in the corn into sugars. Making it the real way only costs a few cents per gallon. This sugar mash of yours will make alcohol, but it will never taste like real moonshine. Ah; and using city water will only lower your alcohol yield in the best cases, and prevent fermentation at the worst.
I made just a cup full of this..I didnt bust open the corn but its starting to smell right..it hadnt been sittin long enough yet but its goona be a good one (: thanks for the video
Thanks alot, this video is very helpfull. ALOT easier to follow than 90% of the other tutorials on making mash. just made my first attempt .. it sucked and not i know what i did wrong. Thanks again
How much corn did you add? I couldnt understand you. It almost sounded like you said 50 pounds. But it didnt look like 50 pounds going into the sugar water. My father-in-law makes homemade tequila down in mexico, and we already got the still and all, but Ive been wanting to make some whisky or moonshine down there. I think there is a market for it.
@ironhead41 If it is all sealed up then what happens to the CO2 after the yeast reaction? Don't you have to let out the CO2 and keep air locked out? I am trying to gather all this in for when I begin gathering materials. Everyone on here has air locks during fermentation except your system. It seems like the lid would blow off without an air lock to evacuate CO2. Your explanation of it being "done usually in 10 days" does not explain why an air lock is not needed on your sealed container. Thanks
@Ncharlestun the lid is not even needed...i just use the lid to keep flies and moths out.......the lid doesnt seal 100% anyway......i know a guy that that doesnt use a lid and pours flies, moths and beetles right in the "seperator".........true....lol
Sanitation? Turbo yeast will get you up to 23-23% if you have an adequate starting gravity. Cracked corn needs to be boiled to dissolve the cellulose to expose the starch. A few pounds of six row Briess at 152 deg will give you enough amylase to convert it's self and the corn starch. I like the corn flavor myself in spirits but I want to utilize all the sugars it has also.
if you make 5 gallons, only 10-15 percent is pure ethanol... so if my math is right from 5 gal you got 0.5 gal of ethanol, which is 10$/gal or 5$/l... not very efficient or cheap i d say... dunno if this is for drinking or driving though :D
@gigi172 he should expect 30 gallons of 15% alc which is 5 gallond of 90% alc. you can dilute it to taste at around 10 gallons of 40%, that will prolly cost you a grand at the liquor store. idk i never bought 10 gallos of alcohol at once but you can make it cheap!
Well I do believe this is gonna make some good headache producing quick shine.
If you want to make some good shine fellers don't use store bought yeast. Take some whole kernel malt corn put it in a bag and set it in a warm creek for two to three days. If ya can pour some warm water on it come evening. Git yourself some sprouts growin and then mash your mash darn it.
ummm, as a homebrewer, i was wondering how you were able to get the starch out of the corn to convert to something the yeast can eat? did you add an enzyme, or did you end up with a bunch of rotten corn in your sugar wine?
@bubbajeasy1 i did call it sugar wine...if you don't malt some of the corn, then it will just be a carbohydrate that the yeast cannot eat, so by malting some of it, you will get an enzyme out of it that will convert the rest of the carbohydrates into sugars that the yeast can eat and produce alcohol. i hope this doesn't make me seem mean, i was just trying to figure out what this guy was doing, i think it's brave that he is making mash for the world to see
@svrichard81 I remember reading somewhere that if you add some malted barley, it will help the corn convert the carbs into sugars. I think that's why they use Rye in some of the whiskeys.
@svrichard81 I use 6 row and wheat, corn sugar mash with aa...I use carboys not dirty plastic lol....some ppl straight ghetto...4 year homebrewer...2 year distiller...this guy has a limited information....maybe during the winter I'll post a video
@scottnsuzs you're right, but as you can see here the corn whole unmalted, you would have to add enzymes to get the starch to convert to a useable"fermentable" product for the yeast. what he is showing in the video would cause someone to make a nasty sugar wash with hints of rotten corn and after distilling it it would not be very good.
If I use a 5 gal. glass, or plastic water container, like the one you used for your apple cider, how much yeast shoud I use for one of them? How is the corn mash doing with those 6 packs of yeast you used? Thanks for the video!
Dang Bo. I got to try this! So you don't need no still? When I saw mash I just thought it was a recipe but this Is a good process. Lot more efficent too.
@lynyrdskynyrd95 this is what gives you stuff to put in the still. Its probably up to 15% alcohol at most. The still doesn't make the alcohol, it just takes it from the mash and condenses it.

That's regular baking yeast? Other grains can be used instead of corn? I have some roasted barley I would love to get some use out of. Smaller quantities, of course. I used to own a grinder just like that and I learned quick to not try to grind corn in it. WOW, serious impressed with getting that corn ground with it. I have a much smaller manual grinder that's not good for corn grinding either. Could I use cracked corn like the kind for chicken feed?
In SHTF situations, this is an important thing to know. I've been debating buying some strong liquors for medical emergencies but would rather making my own. Thanks for the instructions.
