ho visto tutta l'opera da cui è estratto il video:la direzione di Zubin Metha non mi è x niente piaciuta:spesso dove il tempo dovrebbe essere incalzante e mosso ,è lento come un carro funebre a scapito della concitazione dello stato d'animo degli interpreti(nonchè della esasperazione dei fiati che devono sostenere!) e della dinamica del complesso in generale:il coro della "Vergine degli angeli"invece lo ha fatto rapidissimo come pure l'aria del padre guardiano,togliendo solennità all'azione.
I saw this live in Vienna and the singing was absolutely fucking incredible. The production (as some people seem to agree with me here) was a 'little' odd in parts - but Nina Stemme (and also Francesco) were amaaaaazing.

funny but I just watched the shrinking thoat of Ms. Stemme and now you can see what all that weight and thick throaty singing gets you... a ruined voice... a short lived career...
maybe you are right...her voice is stressed sometimes...but who cares? She is so energetic on stage that you cannot pay attention to anything else only her...I was there at the premiere...it was a very strange night...people were booing and shouting during the performance because of the direction. I would rather listen to her than people who can sing maybe better but in such a boring way...
@angelmanrobi I got to see her first ARABELLA in Gothenburg a few years ago....and had drinks with her afterwards. Very sharp lady....and a great artist.
it just all sounds the same... big sound yes.. but always thick and heavy and draggy and when she tries to float the light top notes.. they just don't seem sound right.... I also cannot get past the huge open mouth and wobbling tounge when she sings... and the very distinguishable vibrato as a result
This is very interesting. I'm going to give her 4 out of 5 just because I think she could do the high note on 'invan la paaace' better. But, this is great in general terms. Beautiful voice!
I don't mind the vibrato. Her voice is so dense the vibrato isn't so obvious. I agree that she is better in the German repertoire. I like that analogy of her voice being "declamatory". But mixing it up with the Italian spinto and dramatic roles will probably lengthen her career. Her repertoire is quite large too which can't be said of many singers today.
That she can sing this music with the necessary pathos and give the phrasing the kind of nuance that she does here is simply fantastic. Many people have carped about her voice and I think that it is a beautiful rendition of the role. It may be not be Italianate, but who else around today can sing Leonora so well? Who else would hit that high B so solidly and still keep the rest of the role (more contemplative...this is a prayer, not a declamation) so serenely affecting? Brava!
She may be fine in Wagner (not so much in Strauss) but this is far from the best. The fast vibrato gets in the way of the words, making the language hard to understand. Was that Italian?
Her vibrato normally isn't troublesome at all. It's fast, but not embarrassing. But here her vibrato is spreading much more, I don't know why. Maybe the video didn't capture her voice well...
Beautiful performance, but her fast vibrato and heavy-ish dramatic sound makes it less flowing and legato than it should. That said, she sings beautifully and makes an excellent job. Her top is quite thrilling!
She misses the last high pianissimo notes, too bad....
