When you slap your child for misbehaving, you aren't teaching him why what he's doing is wrong, you're teaching him that you must be respected and feared. Next time your kid wants to misbehave, they won't think: "I shouldn't because I might hurt my dad's feelings", they'll think "If I do this, and dad finds out, he'll hurt me". You aren't teaching WHAT is right, you're teaching WHO is right.

I was arguing that Wageman16's defense for this kind of punishment (i.e. ongoing beatings, verbal abuse, savagely beating your teenage daughter, and 'good old fashioned whippings') is NOT the answer for misbehavior in children or teenagers. However, mild to moderate corporeal punishment (i.e. spanking), if used correctly and used with other forms of discipline, can really help a child; it sure helped me!

@2828chrisjohnson Why is a son a different story? I find that to be a disgusting statement. It is somehow ok if the violence is against a man? People always sing the praises of equality until it comes to things like violence against men and boys, then it is somehow ok... It makes my blood boil.

@RainCityBlues Thats not how i meant it. It wouldnt have been as bad but it still would have been wrong. My dad squared up with me a couple times. i'm just saying once they hit 16~18 they are pretty much a man and if they wanna fuck up and act like a man than they can take a beating like a man too

Just admit you were saying that it is somehow more ok to you that a father beats a son.. You aren't alone in this view, it is common in our society. My goal is was just to get you to think about that. You might want to also think about what 'acting like a man' really is, since you seem to equate it with being able to dish out an perpetrate violence..

For him it was a 'long time ago' but for his daughter, it's every moment! Parent's beware, any punishment, any swearing, or any 'threats' at a child's well being are never forgotten. Children are like sponges, they soak everything up, the good and bad, but they never forget all the rotten messes they were pushed through, no matter how many times they try and wring out the bad memories.

@Wageman16 There are far simpler, and more effective ways, to discipline your children. When you slap your child for misbehaving, you aren't teaching him why what he's doing is wrong, you're teaching him that you must be respected and feared. Next time your kid wants to misbehave, they won't think: "I shouldn't because I might hurt my dad's feelings", they'll think "If I do this, and dad finds out, he'll hurt me". You aren't teaching WHAT is right, you're teaching WHO is right.

@Wageman16 Just 'getting the point across' is a half-ass way to teach. You can, for example, train a child to respect you by 'whippin' her into a submission, or by showing her how to respect you and others by showing your own respect for her, or for your spouse, or for others; either way, the point does get across. But I think you nailed it on the head when you said 'good OLD FASHION whippin'. Go ahead and use your old fashion methods if you don't care to improve your relationship with your kids

@jmlidea haha you are so stupid and you blow shit out of proportion, when i was little and actting up i broke into schools, stole candy from stores, smoked, drunk ect... and this was befor i was even 7. But sure as hell my dad went out and bought a 1in thick paddle with holes in it and whipped my ass when i needed it. Now im 18 got my shit together im told im very respectful and well behaved and my parents hear about that all the time. It all came from being whipped when i was little and i thank

It's like, 'I don't care how my kid passed ...' maybe he cheated, you'll never know because you don't care. The phrase 'I don't care' spews impassioned loathing. @Wageman16 There's nothing wrong with mild to moderate physical punishment if it is used correctly. But continuing to use corporal punishment throughout a child's life and into their teenage years has been proven to be strongly linked to psychological problems. The argument is still debatable, ask any doctor and they'll tell you that the information isn't clear enough to determine the harmful OR beneficial effects of mild to moderate corporeal punishment in children, but they won't recommend it.

@Wageman16 I'll agree to disagree with you, and I sincerely apologize if I have offended you in any way. I personally don't have children, but I have been a mentor/teacher to many. All I can say is, from my experience, kids respond better to an affirmative moral conduct than they do to someone hitting them if they misbehave. Its presumptuous to say that the only thing that works is to administer an ass-whippin, there are so many ways to address misbehavior that don't involve corporal punishment.

@jmlidea man you haven't got a clue, I never had to do any of this to my son, nor my dad to me, and I 've got myself one great kid, and he's what all the other kids call cool but's nobody's fool, long hair, plays in a band (NO DRUGS) just like I did when I was that age (and sometimes still do in a country band) vioence to THAT degree is not the answer unless you want it to go on from generation to generation and never stop....

I was arguing that Wageman16's defense for this kind of punishment (i.e. ongoing beatings, verbal abuse, savagely beating your teenage daughter, and 'good old fashioned whippings') is NOT the answer for misbehavior in children or teenagers. However, mild to moderate corporeal punishment (i.e. spanking), if used correctly and used with other forms of discipline, can really help a child; it sure helped me!

@canadiandavebenjamin I can only remember one time that my parents spanked me, they did it the right way; that is, they only had to do it once! Sure I had time-outs, and other forms of discipline, but that one time I went over the edge and had to face the consequences was enough.
I commend you, though, on your parenting! It sounds like you've done right by your son, you must be proud!
I'm just dismayed how many comments on here are SUPPORTING Judge Addams' beating his kid.

@Wageman16 discipline and punishment are two different things as well. If a kid has been disciplined, it doesn't mean she's been punished a lot. Parents who use punishments as their form of discipline are burning bridges, their children then view them with resentment and shame. A young person should never have to say 'I hate my parents!'

All you people talk about is how you got the belt, but my parents never come near me! I've never been spanked and my father has never pulled a whip on me! (is that a bad thing?) but when I broke my fathers ipad, he just gave me lecture, while laughing and some yelling. Talk about a sweet daddi-oo!!
