  • unbelievable that this sound was possible in 1987

  • Why did the American master system not have FM???

  • @y2k4ever1 cheaper to export and sell

  • I'm still amazed about the 3D-like dungeons. AWESOME :D

  • heh, love that ending with the coders names engraved on the walls

  • Yeah the sound is epic good on this version!

  • Is a real Mark III or emulated?

    The sound is FANTASTIC!!

  • No hiragana or kanji? I take it that it was because of system limitations?

  • The only thing I hated about the US version is how the sound effects sound annoying as hell and high-pitch.

  • I love the idea of adding chips to carts like this, but I like the original version MUCH better. It's not just the nostalgia either. The FM drums are terrible and override the important instruments, which have now completely lost the wavy tremolo effect provided by the original SN chip version. That's exactly what gave Phantasy Star's music so much character and mystery, even with it's limited ability. They are trying to emphasize the percussion here which is just not important to this music.

  • FM sounds!!

  • OMG It's so cool to see the stuff that was being made the YEAR after I was born! And I was playing this game only a few years later.

Poor Nero! His beat-up face always makes me sad. :(

And *why* is the music in our version so much crappier? LOL. "April Fool" wrote the story...? I need to Google this ish. WTF happened b/w the Japanese and English verisions...? I am so confused. lol

  • "Story by April Fool" Epic WIN.

Speaking of WINs and FAILs, you must definitely check my background -- it serves as a foreshadowing of the poor translation that happened in the English version of "Phantasy Star". Note the oil-paint crossout.

  • The japanese version had a FM sound chip that's why it sounds better than the US version and of course is better written and makes a little more sense,

  • IIRC, the Master system doesn't have the FM Synth support certain Mk III games provided, much like how the Japanese version of Castlevania uses a bunch of custom chips for better sound, although the american version uses the NES's default stuff because Nintendo of America didn't allow custom chips in NES games.

  • *Castlevania iii

  • @poopskinTheLiar Actually the Master System DOES have an FM chip originally. It was just removed in the US and EU versions of the system. BUt originally it contained an FM chip.

  • These FM sounds are very beautiful. More beautiful than the other sound scheme.

  • If you've played Miracle Warriors and/or Ys Vanished Omens, check out the FM versions here on you tube O_o

I dare say the difference is even more noticable than in PS

  • While I know the Mark III's soundchip is technically superior to the U.S. Master System. I'm nostalgic to the U.S. version of Phantasy Star's soundtrack. I kinda liked some of the "unpolished" sounds in some of the tracks.

  • Yeah... I really like the FM musics, but the "crappier" version we got in ocident still makes me feel nostalgic

  • Because we always shall remember the first sound that we hear in that time .

  • wow...the music! the tower theme is rocken as usual!! lol! GO MYAU!

  • OTANJOUBI OMEDETO GOZAIMAS, Phantasy Star!!! 20 YEARS!!!!

  • I like the sounds in here. Phantasy Star is major love.

  • The orginal FM stereo sound version of the music and sound fx are vastly superior to the US version IMO. Long Live Phantasy Star!

  • I also like the FM sounds for Phantasy Star, but not ALL of them are better with the FM chip. I wonder if you can disable it in the Japanese game?

  • There was a FM sound add on Japanese gamers plugged into their Sega Mark III systems. Sega later on released the Sega Mark III Master System in Japan which looks just like the Western SMS only it has the FM sound chip built in.

  • The music in the Japanese version of Phantasy Star is better than the U.S. version's for the Master System.

  • The Japanese got the better soundtrack because they had the FM chip within the game and the Sega Mark III (Master System). I can never get tired of listening to that classic title theme tune.

  • I too like th FM sounds and music, but I like some of the music and sounds without the FM chip ( Like the Laconia sword attack, Lutz's hewn magic and the 2nd dungeon music
