What a magnificent actor!! Could anyone help me understand the "fixed-up" joke between 2:48 and 3:00? My English isn't good enough to understand the pun... maybe it has to do with some difference between British and American English I am not aware of? I'd love to find out.. Thanks for your help! :-)
@fritz90405 "Fixed up" could also have meant that the show could have been "fixed", meaning that the panelist would know who the mystery guest would be in advance.

@fritz90405 In the 1950's there was a tremendous scandal about "fixed" game shows - like the $64,000 question - where contestants for big money were supplied with questions and answers ahead of time. The word "fixed" is a reference to that scandal, BTW that scandal was almost the biggest news story of the year.
Right at the end he mentions "payola" which was a scandal around 1960 in which radio DJs were paid to promote records.
Charles ...Profoundly one of Cinema's finest actors-without exception-He always "became" the character...not like Bogart who was Bogart in everything - and Ed G. Robinson , & Cagney - all always where who they were- this man saturated himself and evaporated into the performance loosing himself-
I am aware that Charles played such serious and dramatic parts as Henry VIII and Captain Bly, but every time I see him or think of him I have to laugh cuz I always think of him in Witness for the Prosecution and the "Bermuda shorts" sequence! :-D Check that movie out IT IS A GEM! He was equally brilliant at being comedic even tho he is known as a "serious ACTORRR"
Thanx for posting this interesting clip of a great actor.
"Fixed up" LOL
For those unfamiliar with Charles Laughton: actor popular from the 1920s through the 1960s. I'd recommend starting with these three movies -- "The Paradine Case," "Witness for the Prosecution" and "Advise and Consent."
This most amusing mystery guest spot illustrates John Daly's talents at interviewing.
That look that comes over Dorothy Kilgallen at 1: 53 is priceless. I bet she didn't rattle easily either.
As for Dorothy's weekly transcontinental commute to cover the Finch Trial -- I would have stayed in LA and told Gil Fates to hire a substitute for a month. The back and forth through 4 time zones probably contributed to Dorothy's health decline in 1960.
in this Feb 1960 period, Dorothy worked long hours weekdays in Los Angeles covering the Finch Trial. She jetted back to NY on late Fridays. She jetted back to Los Angeles after the WML broadcasts. This means long hours in LA, long hours in NY, and jet lag for weeks on end. Photos posted on Internet indicate during the Finch Trial Dorothy looks AWFUL. Booze? Various Pills to keep it up?? After the Trial by Finch ended, her behavior became openly erratic on WML
Wow stratford Upon Avon. No idea who this actor is, but very interesting just from this clip. What a charming man, when he was answering the questions I thought he hated being there and wanted it to be over but as soon as he started chatting with Dorothy and John he seems like such a lovely gentleman! "Never never never do we miss WML" oww how sweet!
What a great actor he was -- I never tire of watching him in such films as "Hobson's Choice" and "Witness for the Prosecution."

And, although not a starring role, "Spartacus," if only to see him playing against, well, everybody!
