Just bought an older Jamis Dakota (1992/93/not sure $40). I want to put new rims on. Can I save the rear cassette and spokes and replace the rims? Any help appreciated. 8D
I've built maybe 5 wheels now, over 4 years, and I always have this on in the background to see me right.
I'm gonna go right ahead and say, this guide works for any amount of spoke holes, so long as you're all set for 3-cross lacing. I've just finished a 32 hole wheel now, in fact!
And congratualtions !, you just showed us how to incorrectly lace a wheel. Christ do i have to make my own frekkin video on this subject to set shit straight?
I want to change the spokes on my wheels. Do I have to unlace the whole wheel and start fresh or can I do one spoke at a time? Hope you can advise me on this. Thanks
Thanks for posting this, with your help I have been able to fit a rear hub that I stripped from an old scrap wheel and rescue a bike that I thought was beyond economical repair.
You didn't cover "handedness" or how that effects which way you go with the spoke holes being slightly off-centered. This makes a difference in which way you start the leading and following spokes. Does this rim have all centered spoke holes without any offset?
At 2:22 it kinda looks like Sputnik. The Russian thingy that started the space race. Anywho, this is much too time consuming and looks too difficult for me. But I guess if I was unemployed I would consider it when not consuming massive amounts of sugary cereal: coco puffs, fruit loops, ect.
Fuck this retard is painful to listen too. I hate arseholes on youtube who like the sound of their own voice so much they make an 8min video that should have lasted 3 mins. Poin Dexter
@eaxnitro totally agree. fantastic cure for anyone that suffers from insomnia. throw all the pieces in the middle of the floor, mount the camera directly above the project, don't say a word and lace the fuckin thing. a person would learn ten times as much if he didn't have to listen to the constant backtrack babble all the time. don't explain what it is that you're attempting to do....just do it.
@eaxnitro Another dipshit who doesn't know how to be thankful. Go make your own video, then. Almost nothing is free in this world, so when something free does come along you should be grateful, you pathetic worm.
The lacing pattern that you show in this video will result in spokes crossing in front of the valve hole.
In order to orient the valve hole between two parallel spokes, the second course of inbound spokes should place the 2nd key spoke one hole away from the valve hole, not across it.
You make it look so easy. My spokes on my rim are laced differently. It's like 2 spokes a space equivalent to 2 spokes, then 2 more and so on. It's kinda hard to explain. I'll make a video response so you know what I'm talking about. :)
I'm trying to rebuild the back wheel on my bmx bike, and I either have the wrong spoke length or I'm not figuring out the pattern of the spokes right.... I went every 5 holes.... is the pattern for all rims every 4 holes?
This shit doesnt make any sence ! I watched this video like 8 1/2 times and all I ended up building was a headache and a burrito. youre gay and I want you though. were are you jimmy? WHERE ARE YOUR!!!
Your "just behind" on side two proved to be a pitfall for me lacing a 32 spoke MTB rim... I went the wrong way, but didn't find out before completing step3... The wrongly laced spokes suddenly seemed too long! Start over!!!
HAHAHA build all my own wheels & Been there done that also went to swop roms over on (put the damaged 1 on the back) front was 32 spoke & rear was 36 holes ffs, didnt work it out till i realised i was 4 holes short, wasnt i cursing LMAO never done it again eazy once ya screw up a few times & learn what NOT to do, now my wheels stay true
This is one the greatest "how to" simply because it is funny as well as instructional. jaja

tube flange loL i did a tail whip on my bmx and my foot stamped on all the spokes in the back wheel and bent them all then i had to take em all out and on the last one it would not un-do so i tryed bending it like back and fourth and did not work so i grabed it and it burned my hand and the i tryed cuting it off wid a saw and it sliped off the spoke and cut my burn and some yellow shit came out loL so now i cant ride for a while owell i got youtube
Not sure what drugs the fruitloop below my comment is on, but this is possibly the best video on the whole of Youtube on the black art of wheel building. Well done - very informative :-)
i'm trying to find some time this summer to get some different types of wheel vids up... I'd love to quit my real job and do these, but right now i'd never find another one....
I initially thought everything (including the complementary accessories of the wheel(s)) were to be built or designed from the scratch. Aint that supposed to be?
@spikeyhairdude888: The answer is always four, independent of the number of spokes because the two hub flanges have four sides.that the spokes enter through.
really appreciate you creating this video. i have recently developed and interest in refurbishing an old road bike, and you tube has been a great source! thanks a lot!

Thanks for posting this most informative video.
A friend of mine wich i borrowed by beautiful bike to, trashes 2 spokes and the hub.
With help from this video i was able to fix it myself and save me a lot of money.
BTW, hee is no longer a friend, he didn't pay for the damadge.
It was way harder that it looked on video though. :)

Could you explain why it matters what hole you start on when you start putting spokes in the second side of the hub?
mar504 3 years ago
To be honest, most of the time, it doesnt matter where you start, but it does matter how the spokes line up relative to the opposite side. We only pick a reference point to simplify the task, When it does matter is when you have a rim with nipple holes that are not in the center of the rim in which case 99% of the time our method will work. Point being the holes that are skewed to right of center will line up with the right side flange and so on. Hope that helps.
