  • MAN THAT SOUNDS SCARY 7 SWARMS FROM -A- HIVE PUHH, AND YOUR NEW TO BEE KEEPING MAN YOU MUST OF BEEN SCARED OUT OF YOUR SOCKS, ANY WAY DID YOU GET THEM ALL, AND WERE YOU PREPARED EQUIP. WISE I MEAN COZ I'VE GOT 5 HIVES 3 WITH SUPERS 2 WITH JUST THE BROOD BOX FOR A START. AND HOW DID YOU OR WHEN DID YOU NOTICE THAT THEY WERE GOING TO SWARM ANY TIPS FOR A FELLOW NEW AND A BIT NERVOUS BEE KEEPER. THANK YOU

  • See you are keeping bees in a residential neighborhood. That is

illegal here in South Florida, as there is too much chance of

children and others allergic to bee stings being stung & going

    into anaphalactic shock.

Must go farther out into the country to keep bees here.

  • Is the swarm trap scent pretty much lemongrass?

  • @Acumagnet Not sure. I know people do say lemon grass works. I suppose I'd assumed that the swarm lures you buy are a proper pheromone product.

  • any luck on your bait hive? Here in Texas, I've caught 6 swarms in 10 bait hives.

  • @OutOfaBlueSky After splitting the Langstroth hive the bees swarmed anyway LOTS of times. They always went into the neighbor's yard where we could collect them and we didn't give them chance to see if they would ultimately go into the bait hive. But we did put our swarms into the topbar, although they ultimately absconded! It was a crazy time for two new beekeepers.

  • @drtimwilliams I had problems with swarms absconding. Found the solution to be easy - take a bar of brood out of another hive and it will anchor the swarm. They don't abandoned brood.

  • @OutOfaBlueSky Thanks for the advice. Back then we didn't have a clue what we were doing and didn't realize we had a problem. I think the swarm absconded from our tbh because they went queenless. We found queencups after the bees had gone but without eggs or a queen to lay eggs the bees were screwed. Not sure what the bees achieve by leaving though...... A frame of open brood would have saved the day though.

  • @OutOfaBlueSky - Even though it's brood from a different hive? Interesting.
