I was on the USS Pearl Harbor in formation with the Pecos when this happened. Right after this accident happened, the injured survivors were ordered to board another Helicopter to be transported to the USS Bonhomme Richard because they had better medical facilities. Naturaly the survivors refused, but ended up going.

I was out fishing off the coast of San Diego this very day we could hear all the radio chatter on the vhf about boarding vessels from fictitious destinations (I guess that was part of the drill) then total silence on the radio. We figured they had finished up their drills or whatever they were doing then within the next half an hour we were buzzed continuously by helicopters fanning out around a large area searching for something, unbeknownst to us a chopper had gone down. Sad day for sure.

@JinKazama92 Pilots and co-pilots have been trained for hundreds of years to land on such small platforms, mainly military helicopter pilots because not every environment is going to have one. So while making it a bigger landing would make this easier, it would cost less money to build a smaller and more efficient transport helicopter than to either rebuild or strip down a whole military vessel. Just sayin'.

This was not an aircraft carrier.. this was the USNS Pecos (resupply ship). Aircraft carriers tend to be slightly larger.

This was a training mission with the SEALs (following behind in the RHIBs)... the force recon guys were set to fast rope down to the deck if they couldn't land on the deck but most never made it out of the CH-46, or if they did they were too far down to swim to the surface with all their gear on.

This is a CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter used by US Marines. There were 18 on board and 11 survived. This happened in 1999 and it all happened because the bird came in too low, too fast, got hooked on the netting that ran around the outside of the USNS Pecos, and when the pilot increased RPMs to get unhooked it did not come unhooked and instead hurled the helicopter over the edge and into the ocean. It was a very sad event and a wakeup call for aviators and crewmen to get proper "ditch" training.

FYI.... that ship is not an aircraft carrier but a Military Sealift Command vessel. I cannot remember which though. The marines aboard that helo were practicing boarding the ship as part of training. I believe one or both of the pilots escaped as they were familiar with the aircraft but the 8 marines drowned despite the two fast rescue craft trailing the vessel.
