  • If Dolly Parton and Cyndi Lauper fronted Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, they would've sounded like Lone Justice.

  • Yeah, I can take a little pain

I can hold it pretty well

I can watch your little eyes light-up

When you're walking me throught hell

  • Not only is this better than most of the music that's out now, it 's better than most of the music that was out then!

  • ahhhh, thank you. Searched for this before and for some reason it never showed. Tom Petty is the bomb. I remember this video from back in the day, have not seen it since then.

Well I can take a little pain... I can hold it pretty well... I can watch your little eyes light up.... while you're walking me through hell...

    Thank ya :D

  • Why are most of the best female fronted bands so under-appreciated? Lone Justice, Concrete Blonde, Fetchin' Bones, Divinyls, Baby Animals. Just to name a few.

  • Maria will alllllllllways be one of my all time favorite musicians ~ singer/songwriter. She has inspired me in SO many ways. She's in the top 2 favorite female vocalists for me...with Kate Bush right next to her. Can't say I love either of them more than the other. They are tied for 1st place in my heart. Maria sings with such passion which makes her stand out more than most. So if you know of her music, you are already special! Lucky us! ;-) Love you Maria ~ Ms. Katz

  • my jam

  • very cool ! i love tom petty but this gal can really rock it ! gotta love it.

  • me too

  • Haven't seen this video since the late 80's. Too bad the video quality is so poor. I fell in love with Maria McKee in those days. ... wonder where they got the rooftop concert idea ... heh heh ... I think perhaps from some obscure British band from the 60s ... but who can say right?

  • ME TOO MISS THE VOICE TOO

  • You cannot believe how difficult it was for me to get the Lone Justice cd's, living in Europe. I had to order them by FedEx from Japan!! But it was worth it. If you happen to read this, Maria McKee, I love you still.

  • i looked all over for this song so glad to b able to hear it after all these ywars rock on

  • She is so freaking cute in this video. Always sounds great.

  • They opened up for U2's Unforgettable Fire tour. EPIC!!!

  • Maria McKee on a skateboard, what, 10-15 years before Avril Lavigne? 8-)

  • Me and every guy in my class were hot for her in our mid teens

  • awesome!

  • Awesome!!! Doesn't even sound * 80's*.....

  • In 1984 I swore I would follow Lone Justice around the country, never happened but I still love Maria's voice and these songs so much.

  • Wow! I got familiar with this band far too late!!!

  • I miss this band so much too! I was so in love with her voice and prowess! I thought she was sooo hot! Great band!

  • Wow never heard of this band, they sound amazing! she has such great vocals, very powerful.

  • I can watch your little eyes light up when youre walking me through hell.

  • I miss her older brother (half) Bryan McLean RIP

Long live Love! RIP also Arthur Lee.

  • Saw them open for Tom Petty in the San Francisco area around 1983. She was SO damn cute! The show wasn't bad either.

  • Saw Lone Justice n then Maria solo her voice gave me goose bumps......a rare treasure, wish she would come back into the spotlight!

  • Great posting, thanks. One of my favourite bands way back then.

  • Coolest chick in school, or out.

  • zach's on high street, columbus oh. YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEh

  • Ah Maria you are the best!

  • This band was huge when I was in Japan in the 80's. I'm glad I found it again.

  • Maria was a real little hottie then....how did she become a porker in later life????

  • @perthgloryboy Dude, it's called 25 years!

What the hell do you look like now?

  • Loved this Band too, I can't believe they didn't go anywhere. They'd deff make it in todays music scene.

  • My God this girl had a set of pipes!

  • Maria has one of the great voices of rock. If she made any career mistakes (no offense intended) it was not finding good writers and a strong band to really maximize her voice ...her talent is greatly underutilized! Love ya Maria!

  • Timeless,underated and great music!! :)

  • HUUUGE crush on this gal back in high school. Loved this album, it never gets old.

  • The first "Alt Country" band I ever heard of, and my favorite!

  • Oh I LOVE this woman's voice! Alas, the song is "too country" for me :)

  • this song got a lot of air play on alex bennet kqak the quake in san francisco. a real compliment to the band given the quake was a modern rock format

  • Walked into a U2 concert in Philly in '85. I was late and the opening act was already playing this. I was like, "What the hell? These guys are great. Who the hell are they?" I can still remember I kept looking at the stage as I was making my way to my seat because I couldn't believe how good they were.

  • マリア・マッキー可愛い......

  • So relieved to see this is not a VEVO video....yet.

  • gruntnick: seconded!! I'd love to see that. :)

  • One more for you'all Pre-Alt Country MTV fans ...

  • Love me some Teles and Marshalls

  • this sounds lime a springsteen song

  • Needs more cow bell.

  • @oguybob needs a steel guitar solo

  • One word....REUNION!

  • They were before their time. Damn they're good.

  • This song reminds me of my mom. In the late 80's we listened to this over and over. GOOD TIMES!

  • @Ixtee1979 I dont think this is the right song to be saying reminds you of your mom. lol.

  • awesome song

  • They used to play the Palomino in North Hollywood in '84? I can just hear Petty singing this song in concert. It would hold up today with no problem.

  • Written by Tom Petty. This guy hasn't run out of musical ideas in 40 years.

  • @56richardcory Tom is a God.

  • @56richardcory I have heard Tom Petty do his version before. Did he record it on an album or is it rare? I can't find it on youtube

  • @69zenos1 I wish I could help you. I assume if he performs it live, then it will appear on YouTube. Good Luck, Buddy.

  • フレア入りまくりの映像がカッコよくて印象に残ってるなぁ。

    編集が若干チープだけどMariaのルックスと歌唱力でうまくバランスとれてるからスゴイ。

  • i sooooo miss this band!

  • This song reminds of the days when Moosehead Beer was first introduced in West Virginia.

  • 2 words: Benmont Tench! N'uf said.

OK, Maria McKee isn't all bad either ;-)

  • Amen.

Do you think Ben ever gets tired of holding those organ notes down?

  • Indeed, there have been occasions when I think he's going to force the key right through the organ.

  • WOW Amazing song. First heard this in 1984 I think, bought the album, then saw them on tour at the Town & Country club in London in 1985. Truly stunning concert. Not sure why they didnt make it big.

  • Thank you SO, SO much for this video! Used to love, absolutely LOVE this band... I heard about them at first through love of all things U2 back in the 80's; they (U2) actually did quite a lot for them by "spreading the word" :) This is my favorite Lone Justice song!

  • Lone Justice was a HUGE local band in L.A. before and after this album came out. I remember the album being sold out at just about every local record store I went to. They were alt-country before there was alt-country. Back then, they were called country punk. They were probably hard to market for that reason, but they had a fresh sound and one heck of a frontwoman in Maria McKee.

  • I lived in Europe in the 80's and they were really big there too... There wasn't a day that went by for quite a while that they didn't play their music on our local radio station...

  • Oh yeah, they got quite a bit of attention in the mid-80s. I first saw this video on a local music video show in '85, but I remember there was a lot of buzz about them right before their 1st album came out and shortly thereafter. There was a huge article about them in the L.A. Times before they even had a record contract. The guys in U2 were listening to them. I also remember when "Entertainment Tonight" (of all shows) featured them and mentioned the attention they were getting in Europe.

  • Thanks for turning back on the tune! This song was off the air here for the longest time.

  • Awesome song!!

    Thanks Pete for

    sharing!! 5/5

  • Nice treasure box here! Thanks PETEM4 for share!

  • awesome sound! lookin forward to listenin to more of their stuff!

(tnx for the great share pete, youve done it again)=)

  • tom petty wrote this song gina .... petem4

  • LOVE IT

  • Saw them as an opening act for U2 at the Meadowlands in New Jersey. It was a nice set of music. They may have been a little too gritty and "alt country" for the time. I don't think the '80's were a good decade for them.

  • Great song, and Maria was so cute then!

  • maria est vraiment superbe et ça voix oh ça voix

  • They were superb! Loved them!!

  • i remember when this song came out.. awesome song..

  • this song was written by Tom Petty. Also maria apparently had an affair with Benmont Tench of The Heartbreakers. Coming out of that relationship were two songs done by Feargal Sharkey, Maria's A Good Heart and Benmont's You Little Thief both big hits for Freargal. I would love to hear Petty's demo of this song if it exists.

  • On Petty's PLAYBACK compilation (6 discs of great music) is the TP & the HBers version of this song.

  • Still love this song and so much of their music. Saw them open for U2, though the crowd was impatient and crabby. Didn't envy the band.

Video reminds me that I adored Maria McKee's style of dress and tried to copy a thing or two from her!

  • The 80's were flooded with so many different types of bands, I think it was tough for new bands to make a name for themselves and even get heard. MTV turnred me onto to Lone Justice. Too bad they never got the "big" break.

  • I remember discovering them at my local library, of all places. Oh my gosh... I've never quit loving the 2 albums of theirs I have and all of Maria's as well.

  • I first heard of Lone Justice when they opened for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers on the Southern Accents tour (1985). Benmont sat in on keyboards for their set. They sounded great. But when the Heartbreakers took the stage, the difference in sound was astounding--they are incredible.

  • Probably cause they only gave lone justice a small portion of the mixing desk and special sound effects.unfortunatly a common practice amongst headline acts......

  • I bought this 45 when it was released - just about wore it out...LOVE IT STILL!

  • like rolling stones magazine said a voice like Patsy Cline, Also check Dan Hicks and his hot Licks.

  • great interpretation.great voice. great band.

  • Bought this on vinyl my sophomore year in college. Still have it and it still looks new. A wonderful thing to record on cassette back then. LOL

  • I want your LJ vinyl! Message me if you ever wanna sell it please!

  • Sorry, but I can't let it go. Even though I do not play it, I still keep things like that as a part of my life. Thanks anyway!!!

  • I sold off my vinyl LP collecton during a flea market- Even though I know they would never get played again, I now wish I kept a few memories sake. Especially this one. Im such a tool :)

  • I ordered Lone Justice's Lone Justice and Shelter on cd from Japan when they came out.. still have them :)

  • I saw Lone Justice open for U2 in 1987, and I remember her voice filling the arena while she played her guitar and sang while jumping straight up and down. God I love her! Her voice, and that face. Don't Toss Us Away is on the Texas Monthly list of 100 Greatest Country & Western songs ever and deservedly so.

  • What a fantastic band! Why Lone Justice never made it big, I'll never know. They had everything. Great songs, including this one written by Tom Petty. Lots of loyal fans, including Steve Van Zandt who wrote "Sweet Sweet Baby". And of course, singer Maria McKee, who sang like a cross between Dolly Parton and Cyndi Lauper. The best songs they did were "East Of Eden", "Soap, Soup and Salvation" and this song.

  • i think she was on the first counting crows album too

  • The voice the voice the voice

  • have always liked maria and her band but they didn't have the greatest taste in songs or writing ability otherwise they could have been more popular. also like her brothers band even better love

  • Dwight Yoakam liked her singing, too. She sang harmony on "Bury Me Along the Big Sandy" in Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc.

  • Great band.... Maria Mckee is a lovely girl. Seems quite a few of us would have like d to get closer to her back in the day me too!like

Sweet Jane was originally written and recorded by Lou Reed, Junkies covered it on their "Trinity Sessions" set. An excellent version too.

    Get your facts straight.

  • Isnt "sweet jane" sung by cowboy junkies? Get your facts clear.

  • Another great Tom Petty song, along with a group that just could'nt get out of it's own way to succeed

  • What a cutie!!!!!!!

  • why do they always have to have a roof top video?

  • thank you~

  • Who can tell me the vocal singer'name?

    er... Maria?

  • Maria McKee.

  • It makes me laugh that Avril Lavigne thinks that she's the first "rocker chick" to play up knowing how to skateboard.

  • I think Tom Petty wrote this song?

  • Indeed he did

  • Maria, when I was 16 you were the girlfriend I wished I could have

  • Oh my gosh I used to love this band one song has just always stuck in my head. soap soup and salvation

  • Great song!!!!!

  • Just researched it. According to Wikipedia on the "joshua tree tour" entry, it turns out that Lone Justice was the opening act (among other bands as well) on both the Unforgettable Fire Tour, AND the Joshua Tree Tour. I never saw the UF tour, so only knew about the Joshua Tree..so I guess we were both right.

  • I had heard ways to be wicked when it first came out but it was not until I saw them live in concert that I was hooked. Lone Justice opened up U2 during the Joshua Tree tour in 86 or 87 and I saw them in Worcester MA at the centrum. Maria Mckee was so hot, plus she was amazing to see live...full of energy..I was hooked....went out and bought their album and then bought the second one...even bought her solo album but this was about the time Grunge was kicking in and I got distracted......

  • Exactly. Only we didn't get to see the band down here. Great stuff.

  • Was it not the "Unforgettable Fire" tour that they opened up for U2?

  • I never saw the unforgettable fire tour so I know for sure it was Joshua Tree tour..but after some research I found out they actually opened for them on BOTH tours..(at least for some dates).

  • I was in High School when they came out and ran out to buy the tape when I heard them on TV. MM has mad talent... and hot. One of those ideal girlfriends along with Aimee Mann (Til Teusday) and Corrine Dewery (Swing Out Sister). Ahh, the '80's....

  • You ain't afraid to let me have it, you ain't afraid to stick it in.

  • Great song from Great band!! I think Tom Petty wrote this song.

  • You are correct, but I enjoy this version better.

  • I bought this album the minute i heard this song. What a great band. What a great voice. Dixie Storms is maybe the most amazing song ever. They should have been bigger.

  • When I heard this song for the first time in 1985 I literally ran out and bought it....Maria McKee rocks!!!

  • This is a killer song!

  • Name one female singer today who sings with that passion!!!!!!!1

  • Patty Griffin

  • its on "Guitars Cadilacs, Hillbilly Music" a great Dwight album. It';s available

  • Oh man, I had a thing for her when this video came out. I can't believe that was High School.

  • brings back great memories. love her. anyone know where to find the duet with dewight yohkam [the big sandy] if its here havn't found it. been look n for years.

  • This song is actually called "Bury Me" and is found on Dwight's Guitars, Cadillacs CD

  • My now ex brother-in-law toured with her for the last few years. I met her a couple of times. She looks like a little fairy in real life...Her voices is as powerful as an amazon though.

  • she is so good.

  • Great memories coming back listening to that tune I used to sing every day & every night in Summer of '85. LONE JUSTICE was a new band and MARIA Mc KEE voice was so incredible.

  • 85 was a great music year. merci beaucoup

  • oh fuck this bitch

  • Maria....when I was an 80s adolescent you were the girlfriend I wished I had

  • When I first saw this video in the 80's I immediately had a huge crush on Maria....I remember it so well....Now rediscovering this video after so many years makes me fall in love with her all over again...!!!

  • Zactly I know what U mean sloeber11!

  • yeah well...I knew I wasn't the only one...:-)))

Thanks for posting this Jim !!

  • Thank you for posting this video. When I first saw this I thought that she was so much better then Madonna and that she would take over.

I wish that someone would post Shelter. I can't find it on CD or DVD and I miss it big time.

    LadyDemocrat

  • THANX THANX...love that version! way better than Tom Petty!!! You just made my day *-)

  • No, I don´t think it´s way better than Tom´s version......

  • Petty & Cambell wrote this song. Even so, this version by Lone Justice IS the definitive version!

  • Let's see...TPHB are still going strong (30th Anniversary)...and Lone Justice is where? Just curious...who actually wrote this song? I can't find that info anywhere on the net.

  • Glad this one has been uploaded again.

  • Maria is brilliant.

  • maria can sing rings around tom in her sleep. she could sing the phonebook and make it sound good

  • Plus the vid is a lesson in video lip syncing she really looks like she's singing it

  • This is good but I like Tom Petty's version WAY better...

  • hell fucking yeah, his is bad ass

  • How many times has this to be uploaded again? LOL

  • as many as it takes!!
