  • I love The Supremes and anything they song....

  • Haters gon hate

  • It's little known that Berry full planned to record Florence as a solo at Motown once the scuttle over the agreements she was forced to make (and which I feel broke her spirit) in leaving the label died down. The disastrous contract with ABC came as a surprise to him. How well would Florence have done on Motown? Not a glittering star I think but a solid record seller, certainly better than she did with clueless ABC.

  • I think Diana looked at Flo like that because she was a little louder on that note live than in rehearsal.

  • Old school= perfect ;0)

  • Yes it was all a Conspiracy, like the Kennedy Assasination & 911, C'mon Ramona, Flo was a good singer but lacked, discipline, drive, Cross Over Potential & had some real issues

  • @TheReturnOfBigBear I'm a Flo fanatic but I'm also a realist. Flo probably did lack drive but I think in that situation anyone would lack discipline. If everybody started shittin on Diana Ross what do u think she would've done. Keep in mind, these young ladies were in their early 20's and hadn't exactly learned the best coping skills yet.

  • @soulsista1220 Yes the Girls were just babies when all this happend, but Flo's biggest mistake was Tommy Chapman, I think she also should of went with HDH when they left, (they knew her best), Diana might of been better off to go solo in 1966, when Berry Gordy first approached her with the idea

  • @TheReturnOfBigBear I didn't realize that Flo had an option. I thought Berry Gordy just deaded her on anything Motown or Supremes

  • @soulsista1220 Berry Gordy actually offered Flo a Solo contract, she wanted nothing more to do with Motown & requested (through her Lawyer) a Full Release from her contract, Holland, Dozier, Holland, Left Motown about the same time, so as a "Free Agent" Flo could have signed with the Song Writing Team that put The Supremes & Four Tops on the Map, That's why her signing with ABC made no sense, I figure Stupid Tommy Chapman had Something to do with that decision

  • @TheReturnOfBigBear Its been a while since I read my Supremes/Motown books but Berry offering Flo a contract is vaguely familiar to me, tho only a fool would sign a contract with someone whose inconsiderate decisions had caused them so much pain. I remember Flo allowing Tommy Chapman to influence her to do a lot of things that made no sense at all. I notice u use a capital S in the word stupid when u speak of him. Lol

  • @soulsista1220 Berry Gordy was alot of things, More than anything, he was a Control Freak, He wanted to control, The Publishing, Distribution, Schedules & just about everthing else with his artists, He actually bought up the rights to all of Flo's recordings with ABC, I can not find information on The Contract Flo signed with ABC, But my Gut tells me there was an Advance, or a Little Something for Tommy Chapman in the deal

  • @TheReturnOfBigBear How long ago did he buy the rights to Flo's ABC recordings? Thats scandalous. Leave well enough alone and let that women rest in peace.

  • @soulsista1220 Berry Gordy bought the rights to Flo's Recordings sometime in the early 70's (Prior to her Death), I don't think any of the Material was released till after he Sold Motown to MCA/Universal in 1988

  • @TheReturnOfBigBear Thanx. U guys on this page r on your A-game

  • @soulsista1220 I usually find the right answer, but have made a few mistakes over the years, I find it takes a lot of Cross Checking to find out anything about Motown in the 60's, Being a "Private Company" for so many years, blanks in the Real Story continue to this day

  • @TheReturnOfBigBear Ain't that the truth? I've read everything and everyone adds their own little twist

  • @soulsista1220 A Lifetime to get here & Divided Soul are My Favourite Books!

  • @TheReturnOfBigBear Divided Soul - Marvin Gaye?

  • @soulsista1220 Yes!, It gives a very candid look @ Motown & Marvins feelings about Diana

  • @TheReturnOfBigBear YES! I love "Divided Soul!" Marvin pull no punches with David Ritz. This is the most in-depth biography I have ever read. Ritz did excellent research in finding and interviewing those who shaped Marvin's life. If a biopic is done about Marvin it should be based solely on this book. Another great David Ritz biography is "Brother Ray," about Ray Charles. It gives great insight on Ray's life. Also "This River: A Memoir" written by James Brown is a great read.

  • Gordy had a jihad against Flo - look at her her Flo is so lovely - they all where - but you can see Flo could have been a threat to Ross in cuteness alone.

  • OK, this must be said, Florence is SUPER cute and adorable in this clip. She is so very cute.

  • I like their version of this song. Very well done and the harmonies are really good.

  • agreed - i don't see any drama here - i think its all in fun - plus it was early on. i think they were all acting. well, except for Mary, she was always natural.

  • They bastardized it.

  • Flo's wig has me craving a bowl of spaghetti

  • Flo is show Diana she can make faces too...LOL

  • Merseybeat just dont go black

  • @ajay999999 On that show all the acts would perform whatever the top 5 hits were of that week. They aren't trying to outdo the beatles or anything.

  • It looks like they are having so much fun here. Flo and Diana are soooo cute in this clip. Sorry Mary, but you look kinda spaced out there.

  • Mary and Flo got to sing the melody of a song. Rare happening.

  • No wonder Flo looks old it's that awful wig

  • I never realized this before this clip but ..... wow! does the camera love Flo or what? She has the unteachable ability to look right into the camera and make the viewer think she's looking straight at them. She smiles and I smile. That simple.

Diana, as much as I love her (and I do!), doesn't do that here.. Mary is out of the running here (I love her too, but she can't compete in this company).

I think Berry Gordy's jihad against her was because he realized her star potential.

  • Anyone else think that there's a possibility that Mary Wilson could be related to Brian Wilson? because with the only exception being skincolor Mary look alot like Carnie

  • LOL at Flo

  • Flo looks old here and what's with her face at the beginnng it's funny but what was up?

  • Comment removed

  • Flo is looking like Ok I'm here so I'll sing and act a little goofy

  • I wonder who's the guy Flo and Diana are jokingly fighting over I think I know LOL

  • Comment removed

  • waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than the Beatles

  • I dislike it when people change lyrics to amazing songs.. just doesn't sounds the same.

  • @Meyepadwe The Beatles did the same when they covered some Motown songs originally intended for women to sing.

  • this is the beatles song you fuckers!

  • HAHAHAHA I LOVE THE FACIAL EXPRESSIONS THEY GAVE THE SONG MORE!! BUT MRS POWELL TOLD THEM THE SHOULDNT DO THAT BUT I LIKE IT

  • Gotta luv those 60's wigs...lol. Flo looks super sexy as always.

  • Did the Fab Four ever meet them?

  • @smlshin Yes. Mary wrote about their uncomfortable meeting. The Supremes arrived in furs, gloves and wigs while the Beatles were lying around barefoot, smoking pot. They asked the Supremes some questions about the instrumental aspects of their music and Ross just said, "I think it has something to do with the buttons on the control panel." They left soon after that.

  • @pnyc1969 So just wondering why did they cover their music?

  • @smlshin Why not cover it? It was great music and Ross was a great interpreter of music from outside of her background and experience. There's a reason she's excelled in jazz, Broadway and even hard rock (look for "Fool for Your Love"). Also, covers were very common in the 60s. Sometimes the same song would be a hit by 2 different artists within a short period of time, like "I Say a Little Prayer". The Beatles, incidentally, covered the Motown song "Money".

  • @pnyc1969 john lennon was a great admirer of early motown. all bands cover someone at some stage of their careers.

  • @smlshin Their first meeting was uncomfortable, but eventually both groups became very good friends. Paul McCartney was very supportive of the girls and Mary Wilson bought a car from George Harrison that originally belonged to John Lennon. Both groups admired each other very much.

  • Whatever their personal conflicts they were a great team as a singing group - their voices and personalities were such a great match - Even Ross said in her autobiography that they had a charisma together that wasn't the same after Ballard departed the group.

  • @Chutson353 Exactly, leaving aside the question of the Andantes filling out the sound on some records, as performers Diana, Mary and Flo were more than just a lead and backing singers, they had a spark together that no other girl group had before or since and this clip demonstrates that really well.

I think one reason was that potentially all three were lead singers (not true of other girl groups).

  • All three are adorable in this clip, but I must say, Mary just totally blows me away. She seems kind of shy, but oh my GAWD, is she EVER gorgeous!!!!!!

  • I would like to see the whole thing

  • OK! NOW THAT WAS T.I.G.H.T. TIGHT.

  • Wow! How can Mary be so beautiful?

  • i loved this beatles era when they started experimenting with boot polish and womens clothes! by the way where the hells ringo in this one ??

  • i really wish at times there was more harmony within the vocals....like this. It shows each girls range and how they really were wonderful singers. I am a tenor in a local choir and sing harmony. Harmony is NOT easy to accomplish. It is not the melody...so you have to rely on others who know the first note to get the sound.

  • Atrocious. This has to be some kind of a concession by The Supremes to the mob. I can see Sinatra's (or his black, "mini-me", Sammy Davis, Jr.) influence all over this rag. He was the best at killing Beatle songs & I think he use to do it on purpose to try & make them sound silly & ridiculous. But it had the opposite effect of turning a whole generation off of jazz & big band (not to mention Old Blue Eyes, himself).

  • The look that Diana gives Flo is just Diana getting into the lyrics. They're singing "I'm in love with him and I feel fine", so Diana is like I'm in love with him too since Flo is pointing to herself, it's just playing around. I think it's cute

  • They all looked beautiful!!!

  • Miss Flo sure does steal it! I bet she was happy not havin to stand behind u know who--she also seems more into the lyrics than D and M. Mary has that unusual jaw thing she did sometimes-right side of her mouth. The look Diana gives Flo does not seem part of the song to me-Flo did not return it.

  • just look the eyes, mouth and expressions of Mary: she's lovely and charming

  • ?? WHo will Beat OBamster in 2012???

  • flo is just Gorgeous :)

  • i love this! i adore the Beatles and this is one my my favourite songs - and this version is excellent!

  • diana ross is so preety MOTOWN LIVES IN MY SOUL FOREVER

  • love this

  • look at how they sound as a GROUP. they should of covered more songs as a GROUP. and not just diana. that would've been a sight :|

  • Flo's front tooth was chipped but all of the ladies got dental work done a few years after they started making money..flo's chip can be seen on a lot of their early photos

  • @kious07 if you take a look at diane's teeth on the come see about me performence in the pink dresses from the ed sullivan show it looks like she had a missing tooth at around 0:44 that :D

  • Thanks for posting. Amazing chemistry in that group.

  • Love the Supremes they could sing anything & make it their own. Love Mary and Diana styling as my late cousin used to say. Ms Flo looks cute too and it looks like she must have chipped her front tooth. I never noticed that before.

  • did diana suppose to look at flo at the end like dat

  • Mitt Will be the Next PresiDent of the U S A.......

  • go to hell

  • O que é bom dura muito pouco! Não me canso de ver The Supremes!

  • Diana and Mary are sporting identical Barbra Streisand wigs! LOL!

  • finally all three supremes are equal!!! i love it.

  • yeah, florecnce gave diana a run for her money here. and i keep laughing, because flo keeps cutting her eyes at diana. i assume diana was the only one who was suppose to have choreography. but, it looks like florence is kinda like,"say something about it..i dare you!"

    love this clip!

  • mince

  • Flo Was giving diana a run 4 it wit the voice and the expressions. i love it this iz one of the best. i wish they had recorded it just like this but in the full beatles version. I love mary's eyes too (natural beauty)

  • Notice the strong resemblance between Mary Wilson and Joyce Vincent Wilson of Tony Orlando and Dawn.

  • maybe by the eyes and cheekbones but questionable by smile. . . .both were lovely, tho!!!

  • @Mikaelts I agree plus they both wear clothes

  • lol at 0.24 looks to diane and seems like "is she watching" and then at 0.50 diane shows a totally shocked face xD

but who knows maybe it was planned..

  • These medley's were always great. As part of this same medley, The Mamas And The Papas sang "Nowhere Man", Cass and Michelle do a two part harmony on it that is not to be believed.

  • Diana's double-take... HAHA!

  • ...oh my GAWD ..shut up. everyone.

  • I just love flo in this

  • Diana is definitely hot about Flo pointing to herself that's "I'm in love with him and I feel fine"

Yes, around :20 Diana is nudging Flo. Diana jaws and eyes give her away as she continue to sing. You can almost see Diana anticipate Flo is gonna do it again (but hoping she wouldn't). The look Diana give Flo at the end really is classic.

  • I did not see that. Hot? rumors

  • Actually, I always saw this as Diana hamming it up for the camera. She was looking at Flo like that as if to say, "Your'e in love with him??? Hell no!! I'M in love with him!"

  • @yandrsupreme

i agree - its just fun theatrics - not backstage drama. flo points at herself several times throughout the video to no reaction from diana - so i think its just fun.

  • This is terrific.

  • This clip just validates what I always felt: That Beyonce is co-opting The Supemes vocal style BUT tries to LOOK like FLORENCE BALLARD!! There ARE some similarities.

Love u forever, FLO....the TRUE sex symbol of the Supremes. While the girls were listening to Diana, ALL the guys on the block LUSTED after Flo.

  • I think most guys were lusting after Mary. Flo ws cut e and sexy but Mary was hawt!

  • Yes, the guys were ALL ABOUT Mary. She was gorgeous. And that was primarily the big rivalry in The Supremes. People think it was Flo and Diana, but it was MARY and Diana. Diana was insanely jealous of Mary's looks, and Mary was jealous of Diana's lead status and take charge attitude. Flo looked really great here, she was "on" for this.

  • I was always drawn to Diana out front because she was always doing something dramatic with her eyes or hair; like brushing the hair away from her eyes witha finger. I LOVED that. I also looked at Mary alot because she was so nice looking in the back ground with her side of the mouth singing, etc. Her blonde wigs and dance moves.

  • Yes, Mary was silver screen lovely!! ♥ Diana was pretty but she was so thin . . . I think Flo was the sexy one.

  • Beyonce is a big copycat!! She thinks she is the new Diana Ross...she will never be!!

  • she thinks nothing, she s being herself, and shes on top of her game right now so quit hating

  • @winjasonwin beyonce? she can pretend ...yet we know there will be ONLY one

    DIANA ROSS!

  • wish this was on their BIT OF LIVERPOOL lp along w/ 8 days a week

  • This isn't a Diana Ross & The Supremes video. This is a SUPREMES video.

Anyway, they all look so beautiful. Especially Diane and Mary. Flo looked beeautiful but not as much as she usually does in my opinion.

  • They don't look very happy,

  • Diana Ross & Mary Wilson are so beautiful in this clip & Florence Ballard's voice is top notch on this performance.

  • i watched it. so sad. no many artists sang each others song. and it's more special beacuse the supremes and the beatles were trading number one spots

  • Don't forget to watch the Florence Ballard (Unsung) story on the TVOne channel Sunday June 28th 09 .

  • Ick! did they really LIKE the beatles or were they just trying to cash in?

  • what the hell is that suppose to mean

  • that it was a big hit for the beatles, and recording something by a band that super-popular at the time might help them sell a buncha records too. i think the supremes are okay, that song just sounds wierd by them. maybe they really were beatles fans i dunno. beatles like girl groups, had the ronettes open for them once.

  • moonlily1: on Hullabaloo artists would sing whatever songs were in the top 5 or 10 that week, That's what the Supremes were doing.

  • They LOVED The Beatles

  • Thanks for such a rare treat! The girls were international superstar by this time. They look elegant and very successful.

I just wish that Motown would not have been so hooked on those 50s/60s musical arrangements better suited to the Lawrence Welk show rather than Top of the Pops!!!

  • seems like This was Part of a Medley.

  • It IS part of a medley that featured Frankie Avalon & few other acts putting Lennon/McCartney songs thru homogenized renditions of their tunes. This was done shamelessly by the producer's of Hullaballoo to try to get older folks to watch their program . Around this time (early 65) The Supremes had had two #1records after their 1st 10 singles failed to get airplay. Gordy was envious of The Beatles success but was pleased that they covered Smokey's "You Really Got A Hold On Me".

  • how would u know?

  • I have the entire show on on tape. I recorded it back in 2000 when AMC was showing episodes of Hullaballoo on Sat. evenings. They broadcast 2 complete shows at that time. The Lennon/McCartney tribute show was one of the 2 shows. So , yes, I have the complete show in my video library. The Gordy envy is documented in Quincy Jones produced series from the late 90s titled "Rock & Roll". Check out episode 3 , "Britain Invades , America Fights Back"

  • Florence knew wat she was doin LMAO! when diana gave her that look, Flo continued singin and had a little smug smile like: "yea bitch i took it there". that is hilarious.... i wondered what happened backstage afterwards lol

  • lol thats exactly what im thinking

  • Comment removed

  • OMG!..everyone just shut up with ur stupid dramatic analysis's.

  • Such beautiful girls. Mary and and Flo were some fine ass ladies. Diana was cute to.

  • There was good chemistry betrween them in this recording. Everything seems equal.

  • thee so young and happy.

  • I don't think its a act all of them sung at the same time she could've looked at mary to but did'nt and when the scene first opened up they all looked alittle upset and it was no secret that diana and flo were having disagreements it was in florence radio interview.Even Mary has said the only thing that annoyed them was that it had to be all about Diana

  • The Supremes were totally profressional. They were not upset at the beginning. Diana was probably getting pissed off that Flo was being so charasmatic and playful to the camera and audience LOL

  • My GOD Diana soooo acted come on its cause they both sang "Im in love with him and I fell fine" it was on porpose daa!

  • People need to stop trying to make stuff up. Ms. Ross acts when she sings she is an actress. In the song it says "I'm in love with him and I feel fine" So when she makes a face at flo she is acting like girl you betta not love my man cus he is mine find your own to Love. She is not being mean And Flo is not trying to mess with Diana by being playful. She was just haven fun with the scketch!!!!!!

  • Trollop, u r so right! Ross is performing and so is Flo. Apparently some people have never seen the group perform on tv.

  • Dick Clark said when he heard them harmonizing he stopped and listened and knew they had" it."

  • What did dick clark say about the supremes harmonizing on the tour bus? please respond soon!

  • he overheard them singing "People" by Barbra Streisand and he said something like he knew they were special.

  • Dick Clark also said that from the very start The Supremes were always polished and ready to go, not smokin' dope or sloppy in their demeanor, This is something Berry always demanded from his artists

  • did anybody catch that look that diana gave flo at :50

  • I bet Diana pinched Flo at 0:20 to stop taking the lead - Bless you Flo - forever!!

You are the real Supreme and will live forever!!

  • You got that right lol

  • LOL. I almost missed that.

  • i think they sang "you're nobody til somebody loves you" right after this, and they did GREAT!!!!!!!

  • Mary is so beautiful here!!

  • Flo stole the show!

  • she sure did

  • @fcukboi115 OMG, Flo's smile does it every time it is so gorgeous, it really melts the heart, she was so beautiful and she certainly did steal this one. well done Flo. xxxx

  • She normally did but it's Flo who takes the spotlight here - Diana even gives her a nasty look towards the end LMAO

  • i love the live music from their show appearances

  • Before all the fame and crap got in the way of these girls this is when I thought they could do no wrong. I saw this on TV back in the day and I was kid with LOVE in his eyes for my three queens, Diana, Mary and Florence. They all looked so happy here.

  • i think this is from hulabaloo when they sang back in my arms again

  • AGAIN another flawless performance!

  • Diana Ross looks so nice here.

  • i just luv this performace...

  • Just a note.

The group was called THE SUPREMES in 1965 when this was recorded, the name change didn't come till summer of 1967 when Florence (who is featured here being MORE charasmatic than Diana) was fired
