  • Excellent.

  • very nice!

  • in this composition i find some deep and significant cadences (for example 1:14 till 1:34) which give me the impression that the composer tried to escape the omnipresent Eminor chord. But he cannot free himself from this chord which pierces the whole piece (except from 1:32 till1:45) nevertheless - an outstanding performance of a piece that i knew from michael tröster's cd.

  • 0:38 -1:00 ...epic..

  • Phenomonale!!

  • Can someone who's played this give me some input or information I'm missing. The sheet music tells me to play F# in the last measure as do some recordings I've heard. Due to all the F naturals beforehand and watching Dyens himself seemingly play an F natural I'm a little confused. Probably not the most important detail and I think I'll stick to F# but I'm just curious. Tell me if you know anything.

  • too much crazy song ... guitar professors do not prefer this at competitions ... its a soup of sounds you can play on guitar

  • too much crazy song ... guitar professors do not prefer this at competetions ... its a soup of sounds you can play on guitar

  • I didn't even know that Christopher Lloyd was so great at guitar :)

  • Listening to this makes me wonder: How would people react to hearing this in Bach's' or Beetoven's days of living? so much emotion.

  • AWESOME PLAY!!!

  • eyey kompa tengo tiempo buskando la partitura mas no la encuentro tu no la tendras por ai? si la tienes kontactame porfa t lo agradeseria saludos

  • One my guitar idols... no matter how much i practice i'm pretty convinced i will never reach that level..

  • @RoyalSlaughter

just practice 5 hours a day every day

  • this is the best pieace i ever saw.

    Bravo Boland Dyens!!!!!

  • The only version i'm able to listen to without losing the sense of what's going on.

People generally play this too fast cousing me to get fatigued from running after the notes.

Thank you Roland! (Even if your name reminds me of my car recorder :P)

  • Some withcraft going on at 0:52

  • great playing but maybe is to slow....

  • @CiRkODs, this is a composer and he knows how fast he should play ;)

  • Amazing

  • As a matter of interest, who do you think plays this better, Everlast?

  • Comment removed

  • @Lolalovesamba

I've heard and seen other performances, some good ones, some different ones, and other very bad ones. It is easy when the guitarist plays it clean and "perfect", and it is also easy when a guitarist plays it very bad; but when a musician expresses a piece in a different way, it is very hard to clasify it. The good performances can be different, but bad ones can not. (...)

  • @Lolalovesamba

(...)I think Dyens' original recording of this piece (on the album "Hommage à Brassens") is the score speaking through its writer. This version is a little bit different, but that's because he wants to speak a little bit different. The composers speak, the rest of us we repeat what the composer speaks, and we can repeat his words the way we want, and it can sound good, bad, or different. (...)

  • @EverlastJazz Agreed, at most, but if we speak for example in the ways of contemporary composers, no we can't repeat them words the way we want, unless we have a problem of understand what composer intented on every part of his/her write. By the way a composer is composing and not playing for example Brouwer has such good guitar pieces, but he will never be able to play them as a good guitar performer that is not composing as Williams or Russell.
  • @EverlastJazz

Dyens that alternates guitar playing and composing has more to give to improvisation and inspire others but not so many as a guitar performer I think.

  • @Lolalovesamba

(...) I think the composers will never play "bad" their own composition. Take Leo Brouwer's pieces for example, they were played very good by guitar virtuosos like John Williams, but if you hear Brouwer playing, with or without mistakes, "you're hearing Brouwer speaking Brouwer". Here you are listening to "Dyens speaking Dyens".

Please sorry for my english ;) I'm learning french, I hope to be able to write all this in french one day.

    Regards from Buenos Aires.

  • @EverlastJazz

You want to learn french ? Come and visit during Jazz in Marciac, not the bigger festival, but the best mood around for sure !!

(I wish I could dance tango soon)

And to stay in topic, I'm looking forward Dyens in three weeks, so much !

  • @EverlastJazz

thanks for posting this! and i totally agree with you. i never liked the piece, but with dyens him himself playing i actually understand the piece. there are a lot of interesting details and it is also a very lyrical piece, but you never hear this when it's played so fast...

  • @GitFlo

    : )

Regards from Buenos Aires my friend

  • @EverlastJazz you're right but it's clear that Dyens is not John Williams... Anyway, he's the composer, so his interpretation is good beyond every error.

  • this guy is amazing !!

  • cuanto sentiminto y perfeccion la raja roland

  • It's my guess that some of you don't realize that the man playing is Roland Dyens...

  • Dyens

  • out-of-this-world

  • This man is god of the guitar XD

  • In my opinion this is a creative masterpiece .

    Outstanding playing as well.

  • wuao excelente

  • Ah, genius. Simply perfect.

  • I wish I could play that !

  • aaaaaaaaammmmmmmmmmmeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeennnnnnnnnnnnnn

  • genius, awesome!

  • A shame the audio is a little bit off. But this is an incredible piece of music. Dyens is truly an artist.

  • Very Great, so BEAUTIFUL!

  • que loco para tocar ¡UN GENIO!

  • ummm yeah...no offense, but vaca doesn't even play the part with the rhythm on the f# well or correctly to boot! so far from this interpretation.

  • Listen the version Pirai Vaca the best¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

  • Man.....Roland Dyens is one hell of a guitarist.......my idol.......and Libra Sonatine......A BRILLIANT MASTERPIECE!!!!!!

  • Bravo!!!

  • nice :)

  • One of my favourite solo guitar pieces, along side with Areial Boundaries (Michael Hedges), Prime (Pertteri Sariola) and Dancing Trees (Sergio Altamura).

I guess what gets me about this composistion is the progressive nature and attention to dynamics.

    In short, Fucken Awsome.

  • best living guitar composer, after brouwer of course:). but Roland Dyens is up there, hats off to him, amazing.

  • Toca com extrema limpeza sonora, e o final é majestoso!

  • it's beautiful

i wish the sound was better, or maybe its just my speakers

  • only one better than the master's performance himself is ahmad as-salamouny's on his album 'brazilian guitar'. as-salamouny is not reachable. perfect both musically and technically. unfortunately no upload still here on youtube!

  • the best of all i 've seen....played by his master

  • Una pieza magnifica y perféctamente interpretada.

  • sebastian villanueva version is best!!!!!

  • This is a perfect example of beautiful modern classical guitar. This fantastic peice jumps off the guitar at you. Very well played, especially at the end with all of the modern techniques such as tapping on the guitar. Great expression, fantastic piece, awesome video.

  • It is Awesome! ¡Es Excelente! Es ist ausgeseischnit! (correct me if I misspelled the German)

  • The final is excelent, i love 3:23

  • My teacher played this piece yesterday in the middle of a class, without even preparing or something. I think I need 3 - 4 more years to play this :P

  • please!!

does anyone have the score of this piece???!!

  • Can u even play it?

  • beautifulll

  • watch?v=bVrU-JAxLZA

    watch?v=a_5QpsqCDgg&feature=related

check these two guys for example.... I don't mean Dyens plays this with no passion, but I believe some others can play it even better, at least in my own taste!! Nobody would ever say that the best player Chopin's sonatas is Chopin himself, don't you think?

  • I think there's no "better" or "worse" performance, but "different" ways of performing it, depending on how the guitarist deciedes to expose the piece. As regards to the videos, you've got to compare them with the original (Dyen's), and you'll notice that they're VERY different (tempo, dinamics, etc). Personally I don't like them. Also don't forget that Dyens is one of the greatest guitarists, people usually underestimate composers, I don't know why. But as you said, it's a matter of taste. ;)

  • @ilNencio that version is too fast

  • Too fast..? Are you aware of who's playing there?

  • @ilNencio I guess you like speed, ilNencio :-) ?

  • might sound stupid but in my opinion, although this is a great execution, this is not the greatest interpretation I've heard..... great music, though!

  • Well, given that this is a performance BY THE COMPOSER wouldn't you think this is THE definitive interpretation? BTW: who did you think did a better "interpretation?"

  • Galina Vale

  • thats ur problem

gotta go with satan for guitar

  • God isn't stopping you from learning to play the guitar. Whiner.

  • man this cat is out of this world. Very very awesome playing. 5 stars

  • wonderfull composer and guitarist!

  • Gracias maestro, por regalarnos esta musica.

  • il utilise une guitare classique ou acoustique?

Does he use a classical guitar or a folk?

  • classical

  • il utilise une classcal

Lol i'm spanish I have no idea of frech, if you don't understant this, hi is using clearly a classical. Can you listen to the sweetness of the nylon strings?

  • There is no "worlds best" at any instrument. Thats a subjective statement. I would say that roland is among the worlds best guitarists. His depth of nuance, amazing technical prowess and emotion ranks him among the bets, IMO.

  • this is amazing i especially love the last 30 seconds or so and the ending is so badass

  • It's awesome!

    He's genius <333

  • What are you, a gay fish?

  • Milos Janjic a guitarist from Serbia plays it much better.

  • This is awesome! He plays it perfectly!! Best Version on Youtube definitly!

  • obviously ! he is the composer!

  • haha

  • it's like duh -.-

  • really though, he is not the greatest guitarist. He is a good composer, but there are better performers. Its not uncommon for people to play this better than Dyens. He is a great composer though. Just not as tight on his technique as some great performers.

  • he's a hell of a lot better than me and any other guitarist i know tho I'm always amazed by his super fast runs in his songs i love his playing

  • Comment removed

  • Genius

  • stuning ..

  • omg

  • Vojin Kocic bolje to svira....Brana

  • i agree....much better...ma ovaj bre nema pojma :p

  • god?

  • the camera was not good;d we need a faster one!! i cant see the last 10 secs:D his skills are imba!

  • he looks like the professor from back to the future, but his skills are even more amazing than that

  • Roland Dyens is a true artist in the best sence of the word .Everything he plays sounds natural and lets the intention of the composition speak and therefore reaches the soul of the true listener .

He's got a timing comparable to the best jazz musicians alive nowadays, composing and improvising skills fedd by an enormous creativity and deepness of the soul and offcourse .....he is an outstanding guitarist , one of a kind .

  • a difficult piece indeed . technically demanding for master classes . yeap !

  • crazy man !!!
