in this composition i find some deep and significant cadences (for example 1:14 till 1:34) which give me the impression that the composer tried to escape the omnipresent Eminor chord. But he cannot free himself from this chord which pierces the whole piece (except from 1:32 till1:45) nevertheless - an outstanding performance of a piece that i knew from michael tröster's cd.
U can copy the hand movement from Goya and try all your life to copy perfectly his art, but you can't, it will be always an INTERPRETATION. The best playing Dyens is Dyens
Can someone who's played this give me some input or information I'm missing. The sheet music tells me to play F# in the last measure as do some recordings I've heard. Due to all the F naturals beforehand and watching Dyens himself seemingly play an F natural I'm a little confused. Probably not the most important detail and I think I'll stick to F# but I'm just curious. Tell me if you know anything.
if anyone says this isn't the best version. there Fuckn idiots. who better than the person who made it. people all "the asian chick does it the best" or "that one guy does it the best." who else does the bendy tremelo part at 1:03 the best. the mother fucker who wrote it that's who. everyone else fucks it up. to any onyone who says otherwise send me the link.
This is my favourite one ... this is one of the best compositions for classic guitar EVER ... My wish is to play Libra one day :) I love Roland Dyens and all his compositions ... He is one of the best guitar~players and composers .... ♥
I've heard and seen other performances, some good ones, some different ones, and other very bad ones. It is easy when the guitarist plays it clean and "perfect", and it is also easy when a guitarist plays it very bad; but when a musician expresses a piece in a different way, it is very hard to clasify it. The good performances can be different, but bad ones can not. (...)
(...)I think Dyens' original recording of this piece (on the album "Hommage à Brassens") is the score speaking through its writer. This version is a little bit different, but that's because he wants to speak a little bit different. The composers speak, the rest of us we repeat what the composer speaks, and we can repeat his words the way we want, and it can sound good, bad, or different. (...)
@EverlastJazz Agreed, at most, but if we speak for example in the ways of contemporary composers, no we can't repeat them words the way we want, unless we have a problem of understand what composer intented on every part of his/her write. By the way a composer is composing and not playing for example Brouwer has such good guitar pieces, but he will never be able to play them as a good guitar performer that is not composing as Williams or Russell.
Dyens that alternates guitar playing and composing has more to give to improvisation and inspire others but not so many as a guitar performer I think.
(...) I think the composers will never play "bad" their own composition. Take Leo Brouwer's pieces for example, they were played very good by guitar virtuosos like John Williams, but if you hear Brouwer playing, with or without mistakes, "you're hearing Brouwer speaking Brouwer". Here you are listening to "Dyens speaking Dyens".
Please sorry for my english ;) I'm learning french, I hope to be able to write all this in french one day.
You want to learn french ? Come and visit during Jazz in Marciac, not the bigger festival, but the best mood around for sure !!
(I wish I could dance tango soon)
And to stay in topic, I'm looking forward Dyens in three weeks, so much !
thanks for posting this! and i totally agree with you. i never liked the piece, but with dyens him himself playing i actually understand the piece. there are a lot of interesting details and it is also a very lyrical piece, but you never hear this when it's played so fast...
@EverlastJazz you're right but it's clear that Dyens is not John Williams... Anyway, he's the composer, so his interpretation is good beyond every error.
MAEEEESTROOOOOO!
One of my favourite solo guitar pieces, along side with Areial Boundaries (Michael Hedges), Prime (Pertteri Sariola) and Dancing Trees (Sergio Altamura).

only one better than the master's performance himself is ahmad as-salamouny's on his album 'brazilian guitar'. as-salamouny is not reachable. perfect both musically and technically. unfortunately no upload still here on youtube!
This is a perfect example of beautiful modern classical guitar. This fantastic peice jumps off the guitar at you. Very well played, especially at the end with all of the modern techniques such as tapping on the guitar. Great expression, fantastic piece, awesome video.
check these two guys for example.... I don't mean Dyens plays this with no passion, but I believe some others can play it even better, at least in my own taste!! Nobody would ever say that the best player Chopin's sonatas is Chopin himself, don't you think?
I think there's no "better" or "worse" performance, but "different" ways of performing it, depending on how the guitarist deciedes to expose the piece. As regards to the videos, you've got to compare them with the original (Dyen's), and you'll notice that they're VERY different (tempo, dinamics, etc). Personally I don't like them. Also don't forget that Dyens is one of the greatest guitarists, people usually underestimate composers, I don't know why. But as you said, it's a matter of taste. ;)
might sound stupid but in my opinion, although this is a great execution, this is not the greatest interpretation I've heard..... great music, though!
Well, given that this is a performance BY THE COMPOSER wouldn't you think this is THE definitive interpretation? BTW: who did you think did a better "interpretation?"

There is no "worlds best" at any instrument. Thats a subjective statement. I would say that roland is among the worlds best guitarists. His depth of nuance, amazing technical prowess and emotion ranks him among the bets, IMO.

Roland Dyens is a true artist in the best sence of the word .Everything he plays sounds natural and lets the intention of the composition speak and therefore reaches the soul of the true listener .
He's got a timing comparable to the best jazz musicians alive nowadays, composing and improvising skills fedd by an enormous creativity and deepness of the soul and offcourse .....he is an outstanding guitarist , one of a kind .
Excellent.
